13 Essentials to Prepare for a Winter Storm This Weekend

A local warning—not a national outlook—determines whether your area is affected. Check current alerts, then prepare these 13 home and vehicle essentials.

A winter storm warning is local, so first check whether one applies where you live: use your National Weather Service forecast office’s current alerts and forecast. The NOAA Weather Prediction Center discussion issued October 4, 2026, and valid through October 7, said the probability of significant snow and ice across the contiguous United States was less than 10 percent. That national outlook cannot confirm conditions or warning status for your location—or the entire weekend. If hazardous weather is forecast where you are, these 13 essentials can help you prepare to stay home or handle a delay in your vehicle.

First, check whether the warning applies to you

Look up your location through your local National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office, then read the alert for the hazard, affected area, and timing. Outlooks are an early heads-up; a watch signals increasing concern; a warning means hazardous conditions are expected or occurring. NWS Sioux Falls describes outlooks as possible up to seven days ahead, watches generally two to three days before an event, and warnings generally within 24 to 48 hours. Those are broad timing descriptions, not a guarantee for every forecast or location. Warning criteria also vary by hazard and local office.

Follow updated statements from the office responsible for your area. NWS guidance advises preparing before dangerous conditions arrive and limiting nonessential travel when conditions are hazardous. NWS winter preparedness guidance explains the alert stages and stresses monitoring updates.

13 essentials for a winter storm

Prioritize supplies that let you get warnings, meet basic needs without power, and manage a vehicle delay. NWS preparedness guidance recommends planning for possible loss of heat, electricity, or telephone service, and for conditions that last longer than a day. Adapt the list to your household, climate, medical needs, and likely travel.

  1. Battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio. A radio with backup power can help you receive official updates if other communications are disrupted. Check that it can receive alerts for your area; no particular model or performance is established here.
  2. Flashlight and extra batteries. Keep them accessible at home and in the vehicle so you can see during a power outage or roadside delay.
  3. Portable radio. A battery-powered or hand-crank radio provides another way to follow information if you cannot use your usual devices.
  4. Drinking water. FEMA’s 2025 household-kit answer key recommends 1 gallon per person per day. Treat that as a planning benchmark, and consider the needs of children, pets, and anyone with medical requirements.
  5. Food that needs no cooking or refrigeration. Choose nonperishable options your household can eat if the power is out. Keep high-calorie nonperishable food in the vehicle in case you are delayed.
  6. Prescription medicines and necessary baby supplies. Make sure you have what household members need if roads close or shops are inaccessible.
  7. First-aid supplies. Keep a kit at home and a compact one in the car.
  8. Warm, dry clothing and blankets. Store extra clothing in the vehicle and keep blankets or sleeping bags available for a delay. NWS recommends having heating fuel ready where relevant to your home’s heating system.
  9. Charged phone, charger, and backup power. Keep a vehicle charger and charged backup batteries with your car kit; conserve phone power if charging access may be limited.
  10. Windshield scraper and snow brush. Use them to clear snow and ice from the vehicle before driving.
  11. Shovel and traction material. A small shovel and sand or cat litter can help if a vehicle is stuck. Keep traction material where it can be reached without unloading everything.
  12. Vehicle basics for a breakdown. A first-aid kit, tool kit, booster cables or charger, and tow rope can be useful. Pack only what you can store safely and know how to use.
  13. Simple emergency and sanitation supplies. Consider a water container, emergency toilet supplies, and a candle with matches for the vehicle; keep matches waterproofed. NWS also lists a compass and road maps. Choose supplies that fit your route and know how to use them safely.

FEMA’s 2025 winter-storm answer key offers additional household and vehicle kit examples, including cash, hand sanitizer, a distress flag, and flares. Its list is a preparedness example, not a comparison of products or a requirement to carry every item.

Make the checklist fit your household and budget

Start with essentials you lack and supplies that match your likely risks rather than buying a prepacked kit on the assumption that it covers everything. If considering a winter car emergency kit, inspect its contents against your needs; kits differ, and the official guidance does not endorse a particular package. For radios or other equipment, verify power options, alert and reception features, portability, and suitability for home or vehicle use from the product’s current documentation.
