The right format depends on what you are storing and where it needs to fit—not a “best” ranking: Walmart’s category pages do not establish that these products are tested winners, and exact listings and availability can change.
Choose for the clutter problem—and measure first
Start with the storage location and the items you want to contain. Measure the available width, depth and height, then compare those measurements with the product’s outside dimensions. Walmart’s Home Storage & Organization guidance puts it plainly: “You should measure width, depth, and height before you choose any home storage organizer.” Capacity in quarts or gallons describes volume; it does not tell you whether a bin will fit a shelf, closet or bed frame.
Visibility and access matter too. Clear containers make contents easier to identify; opaque or decorative ones can make visible shelving look more uniform. Open bins are convenient for items you reach for often, while lids help contain contents. Walmart advises shoppers to “match the lid type to how often you reach for what’s inside” on its Plastic Storage Bins & Baskets page. Latching lids can help when stacking or moving bins; hinged lids can make repeated access simpler.

1. Clear lidded stackable bins for closets and shelves
Choose these when you want to identify contents without opening each bin and make use of vertical space. Before buying, check the outside width and depth against the shelf, plus the height of the bin and lid. Walmart’s plastic storage category includes clear and stackable options; confirm the dimensions and stacking details on the individual listing.

2. Small clear boxes for drawers, crafts and household odds and ends
Small boxes can corral craft supplies, desk items or other pieces that otherwise scatter through a drawer. Walmart’s plastic under-bed category has included small clear stackable boxes, such as a Mainstays 17-quart set. Treat that capacity as a listing-specific specification, not a guarantee of fit: check the current listing’s dimensions and set contents.
3. Open-top or scoop-front bins for frequent-use items
An open bin is practical for toys, accessories or supplies that need to be put away and retrieved often. It removes the extra step of opening a lid, though it offers less containment than a covered bin. Walmart’s plastic-bin guidance includes open styles for convenient access.

4. Lidded plastic bins for under the bed
Under-bed bins can put linens, shoes or seasonal clothes out of sight while keeping them accessible. Measure the lowest clearance point beneath the bed, including frame supports, and compare it with the bin’s full outside height. Walmart’s under-bed category includes an IRIS 41-quart example; verify its current dimensions and configuration before relying on that capacity or fit.
5. Fabric under-bed bags with a clear window
A fabric bag is a softer, potentially foldable alternative to a rigid plastic bin. A clear window can help identify stored clothes or linens without opening it. Check the actual listing for dimensions, closure, construction and whether it holds its shape when filled; category placement alone does not establish those details.

6. Large heavy-duty totes for bulky or seasonal gear
For bulky tools or seasonal equipment, prioritize a tote’s outside dimensions, construction and fit for the intended load—not just its gallon rating. Walmart’s home-storage guidance points to heavy-duty totes for bulky items. If the tote will sit on a shelf or stack with others, check the available space and the listing’s stated stacking features.
7. Drawer organizers and small-compartment bins
Compartment organizers separate small items so they are easier to find and less likely to spread across a drawer. Measure the drawer’s usable interior, including any rails or dividers, and compare it with the organizer’s outside dimensions. Walmart’s storage-container category includes drawer-oriented organizers; confirm compartment sizes on the specific product page if the items need to fit precisely.
