Chevrolet Corvette, BMW 3 Series and Lexus IS have received model-level recognition in recent J.D. Power dependability studies, making them reasonable places to start a used performance-car search. That evidence does not establish that all ten cars below—or every year and configuration of any one model—are reliably trouble-free. Treat this as a shortlist for further checking, not a ranking or a guarantee about the car on a seller’s lot.
What the reliability evidence can—and cannot—tell you
J.D. Power’s U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles. In the 2025 study, 34,175 original owners of 2022-model-year vehicles reported on 184 problem areas across nine categories. The industry average was 202 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100); lower PP100 means fewer reported problems in that study. PP100 is not a prediction of a particular used car’s breakdown risk or repair bill.
The 2024 VDS surveyed original owners of 2021-model-year vehicles and reported an industry average of 190 PP100, up from 186 in the 2023 study. The 2025 figure was 202 PP100. These studies covered different model years, so the figures are context, not a controlled comparison of the same cars over time. J.D. Power director of auto benchmarking Jason Norton said in the 2025 release that “Supply chain issues, record-high vehicle prices, and personnel disruption in the wake of the pandemic were problematic.”
For these candidates, the strongest direct evidence is narrow and year-specific: the 2025 VDS named the Chevrolet Corvette a Premium Sporty Car award recipient and the BMW 3 Series a Compact Premium Car recipient; the 2024 VDS included the Lexus IS among model-level award recipients. Those results do not cover every used model year, engine, transmission, or individual vehicle.

Ten used performance cars to investigate
The table separates models with the cited VDS recognition from models that are candidates to research, not proven reliable choices. For every one, check the exact model year and configuration, then judge the car’s records and condition. A familiar badge cannot substitute for that work.

Why the year and configuration matter more than the badge
A model name can span years, updates, engines and transmissions. A dependability result for one study population should not be stretched across all of them. Before comparing listings, identify the exact model year, engine and transmission on each car, then look for information that applies to that combination. Compare like with like rather than treating two cars with the same badge as interchangeable.

For a personal-finance decision, reliability is only one part of ownership cost. Consider the car’s maintenance and repair records, mileage and prior use, inspection findings, parts and repair costs, and how you plan to drive it. A lower asking price does not settle whether a particular example is a sound buy.

J.D. Power’s used-car inspection guidance calls out technology, controls, comfort and interior, engine and transmission, exterior and tires, and recommends a professional inspection. The 2024 VDS also found infotainment was the most problematic category at 49.1 PP100; Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity registered 6.3 PP100. Those are study findings, not failure rates for a specific car, but they are a reminder to test electronics as carefully as mechanical systems.

- Review the history. Ask for service and repair records, and compare them with the car’s mileage and use. Look for gaps or signs of hard use and modifications that warrant closer inspection.
- Confirm what the car is. Verify the model year, engine and transmission, and make sure any reliability information you consult applies to that version.
- Test the systems. Operate infotainment, smartphone connections, controls and driver-assistance functions where fitted. Check the interior, exterior, tires and suspension for damage or uneven wear.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified professional inspect the powertrain and the rest of the car before purchase. Use any findings to decide whether to proceed, seek repairs, or walk away.
J.D. Power senior director of auto benchmarking Frank Hanley said in the 2024 study release: “The average age of vehicles on American roads today is approximately 12 years, which underscores the importance of building a vehicle designed to stand the test of time.” For a used-car buyer, the practical takeaway is to evaluate the vehicle’s actual history and condition, not rely on a reputation alone.

How to make the shortlist useful
- Choose a year and configuration before comparing reliability claims.
- Give the Corvette, BMW 3 Series and Lexus IS awards their proper scope: they are study-year findings, not warranties or proof about every used example.
- For the other candidates, seek model-year-specific evidence rather than assuming that inclusion on a shortlist proves reliability.
- Compare records, mileage, inspection findings and likely repair costs alongside the purchase price.
