But that figure was not a settled measure: other 2021 lists put West at $1.3 billion, and the rankings do not share a single audited valuation standard. The figures below are publisher-reported estimates, not verified personal balance sheets.
University Magazine’s 2021 top 10
University Magazine’s article was originally published on October 4, 2021, and is currently marked updated July 6, 2025. Its ranking and estimates are:

| 1 | Kanye West | $6.6 billion |
| 2 | Jay-Z | $1.3 billion |
| 3 | Sean Combs | $900 million |

| 10 | Ice Cube | $160 million |
University Magazine attributes most estimates in its list to Celebrity Net Worth. Its Jay-Z entry has an apparent typo: the list heading says $1.3 billion, while the accompanying paragraph says “$.3 billion.” The table uses the heading’s figure and makes no claim that the discrepancy has been independently resolved. Why 2021 rankings disagree
Other publishers gave markedly different estimates for the same people. Fakaza News’ May 13, 2021 list put West at $1.3 billion and Jay-Z at $1 billion, followed by Sean Combs ($900 million), Dr. Dre ($780 million), Eminem ($230 million), Pharrell Williams and Master P ($200 million each), Drake and Usher ($180 million each), and Ice Cube ($160 million). These are Fakaza News estimates, not a reconciled valuation. Fakaza News’ 2021 list.
#1 Best Overall
Wealthy Persons’ November 2021 list also estimated West at $1.3 billion and Jay-Z at $1 billion, but reported different values for several others: Diddy ($855 million), Dr. Dre ($820 million), Master P ($350 million), Eminem ($220 million), Drake ($200 million), Ice Cube ($160 million), Lil Wayne ($155 million), Snoop Dogg ($135 million), and Birdman ($125 million). The publisher says it considers past earnings, financial documents, current holdings, and other industry statistics, but does not give a method that reconciles its estimates with competing lists. The gap between West’s $6.6 billion University Magazine estimate and the $1.3 billion estimates from Fakaza News and Wealthy Persons illustrates why a ranking should be read as a particular publisher’s estimate, not a definitive accounting. The reviewed lists do not establish a common, audited comparison.
Rank #2
Net worth is not annual earnings
A separate Digital Music News article reported a ranking of calendar-year 2021 pre-tax earnings attributed to an ex-Forbes editor. It is not a net-worth list. The article describes the measure as income before fees for agents, managers, lawyers, and other living expenses. Those earnings cannot be added to, or directly compared with, estimated accumulated wealth.
| Place as reported | Artist | 2021 pre-tax earnings reported by Digital Music News |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jay-Z | $470 million |
| 2 | Kanye West | $250 million |
| 3 | Diddy | $75 million |
| 4 | Drake | $50 million |
| 5 | Wiz Khalifa | $45 million |
| 6 | Travis Scott | $38 million |
| 7 | DJ Khaled | $35 million |
| 8 | Eminem | $28 million |
| 9 | J. Cole | $27 million |
| 10 (tie) | Birdman | $25 million |
| 10 (tie) | Doja Cat | $25 million |
| 10 (tie) | Tech N9ne | $25 million |
The Digital Music News article, published in 2022, calls this a “top-ten” list but includes three artists tied at the tenth position, so it names 12 artists. Its figures represent the reported 2021 earnings measure, not a later or current annual income estimate. Digital Music News’ earnings report.

How to interpret a “richest rapper” ranking
- Check the measure: Net worth is an estimate of assets minus liabilities at a point in time; annual earnings track income over a specified period. The Digital Music News figures cover calendar-year 2021 pre-tax earnings, while the other lists present estimated net worth.
- Keep the publisher attached to each number: The estimates vary by list, and the reviewed pages do not provide a shared independent valuation standard.
- Check the date and wording: University Magazine’s page retains a 2021 article date but is marked updated in 2025. That later page update does not turn its figure into a current wealth ranking.
- Do not treat an estimate as an audited fact: The reviewed sources do not provide an audited, unified comparison or a validated accuracy statistic for celebrity net-worth estimates.
