10 Reliable Used SUVs Under $35,000—and Cheaper Picks Under $30,000

For a used SUV with a visible price ceiling, start with the 2026 iSeeCars rankings: its list of crossovers under $35,000 includes ten mainstream choices, while a separate under-$30,000 list identifies four specific model years with average used prices below that mark. These are market averages and model-level reliability scores, not guaranteed asking prices or promises about an individual vehicle. Verify the vehicle’s history, maintenance, condition, and fit for your budget before buying.

How to read these used-SUV rankings

“Cheap” depends on the budget. The broad comparison below is iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking of used crossovers under $35,000; the separate under-$30,000 comparison gives more precise model-year price examples. iSeeCars says its under-$35,000 analysis considered vehicles one to six years old and the latest model years within the price range. The list mixes compact and larger crossovers, so it is not a like-for-like comparison for every buyer.

iSeeCars describes its 1–10 reliability rating as drawing on proprietary research into vehicles’ longevity. Its wider scoring approach also incorporates resale value and safety, using data from more than 12 million new and used vehicles and NHTSA and IIHS safety data. These are iSeeCars’ analysis and scores, not regulator findings or a controlled head-to-head test. A model-level score cannot establish that a particular used SUV has been well maintained.

10 used SUVs in iSeeCars’ 2026 under-$35,000 ranking

The ranking’s first-place vehicle is the Honda CR-V, with a reported average used price of $31,993 and a reliability score of 8.0/10. For the other nine entries, the cited ranking does not provide comparable average prices or individual scores in the available information; actual prices depend on location, mileage, trim, condition, and supply.

Amazon Basics Cross Rail Roof Rack, 52 inches, Fits up to 46" Spans between Raised Side Rails with Gap, Pack of 2, Black/Silver
  • Please verify the roof rack's compatible dimensions before making your purchase.56-inch long cross rail roof rack mounts to most cars, SUVs, or crossovers with raised longitudinal rails, gap between rail and car roof must be 1/2 inch (1.3cm) and above, distance between two rails must be bigger than 42 inch (107cm) and smaller than 49.6 inch (126cm) , diameter of rail must be within 1.4-2.1 inch (36-55mm). Vehicle fit found in Product Description below.
  • Reduced Wind Noise: Rubber sealing strips minimize wind noise for a quieter, more comfortable drive. Refer to the installation video for guidance.
  • Durable and Robust: High-quality aluminum alloy construction resists corrosion and supports up to 165 lbs for heavy loads.
  • Anti-Theft Security: Features a secure anti-theft locking system with rubber-coated steel clamps and a non-rust lock for added protection.
  • Compatibility and Installation Note: For proper fit and safety, watch 2 instructional videos on our detailed page for guidance.
  1. Honda CR-V: Compact crossover; ranked first in the under-$35,000 list, with a $31,993 average used price and reliability score of 8.0/10.
  2. Subaru Outback: Larger crossover with more space than a typical compact SUV; included in the ranking.
  3. Toyota Highlander: Larger crossover option for buyers who need more room; included in the ranking.
  4. Toyota RAV4: Compact crossover; included in the ranking.
  5. Honda Pilot: Larger crossover; included in the ranking.
  6. Subaru Forester: Compact crossover; included in the ranking.
  7. Nissan Murano: Larger crossover; included in the ranking.
  8. Nissan Pathfinder: Larger crossover; included in the ranking.
  9. GMC Acadia: Larger crossover; included in the ranking.
  10. MINI Countryman: Compact crossover; included in the ranking.

Use the list to identify candidates, then compare vehicles that meet the same needs. A compact crossover and a larger family vehicle may differ substantially in passenger and cargo capacity, and the ranking alone does not settle fuel economy, ownership cost, or the condition of a specific example.

Four model-year examples with average prices under $30,000

iSeeCars’ 2026 under-$30,000 ranking supplies specific model-year averages and reliability scores for these four options. The figures are averages reported by iSeeCars, not a promise that a comparable vehicle will be available at that price.

Model year and SUV Average used price iSeeCars reliability score
2023 Honda CR-V $29,478 8.0/10
2025 Mazda CX-5 $28,683 8.0/10
2022 Toyota RAV4 $27,688 7.8/10
2024 Subaru Forester $29,733 7.6/10

These examples clarify why model year matters: a newer vehicle close to a $30,000 ceiling is not directly comparable with an older SUV bought for a lower budget. Check current listings in your area and account for mileage, trim, history, and condition before treating any average as a target price.

What to consider for a tighter budget

For older, lower-price options, iSeeCars’ 2026 small-SUV guide names the 2016 Mazda CX-5 as its top reliability pick under $15,000, the 2021 Ford Escape under $20,000, and the 2021 Honda CR-V under $25,000. These are separate budget-tier picks, not additional entries in the under-$35,000 ordered list. The age and price bands differ, so compare the actual vehicle and its condition rather than assuming a lower purchase price means a better value.

How to choose the right SUV for your budget

  • Set a real spending ceiling. Compare the asking price with the relevant budget band, then account for mileage, trim, condition, and local supply.
  • Choose the right size first. Decide whether a compact crossover meets your passenger and cargo needs or whether you require a larger vehicle.
  • Compare like with like. Use model year, mileage, price, and condition alongside any reliability score. The cited rankings do not establish a same-year, trim-by-trim total-cost comparison across all ten vehicles.
  • Treat scores as a shortlist tool. A strong model-level rating can help identify candidates, but it does not verify the maintenance or mechanical condition of the vehicle for sale.

Check the specific vehicle before you buy

Edmunds advice summarized by the Associated Press recommends reviewing a used vehicle’s history for accidents and problems and avoiding vehicles that show signs of neglect or abuse. Apply that advice to any SUV on the list:

  1. Review the vehicle history. Look for accident records, reported problems, and gaps or inconsistencies that warrant follow-up.
  2. Ask for maintenance records. Check whether the available service history supports the seller’s account of how the vehicle was cared for.
  3. Inspect condition, not reputation. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection when possible; a model ranking cannot substitute for evaluating the individual SUV.
  4. Compare the complete offer. Weigh the price against mileage, trim, condition, history, space needs, and fuel economy before deciding.
