For shoppers seeking a dependable used Japanese luxury vehicle in 2026, the strongest model-level evidence in this shortlist favors the Acura RDX, Lexus IS and UX, Lexus GX, Acura TLX, and Infiniti QX50. CARFAX’s 2026 analysis estimates each model’s unexpected-repair likelihood for 2019–2023 vehicles below its 9.0% luxury-car segment average. The other picks broaden the list across sedans, a coupe, and a hybrid, using iSeeCars scores that combine reliability, resale value, and safety—not the same measure as CARFAX.

These are useful starting points, not a precise ranking or a guarantee about any individual car. Check the specific vehicle’s year, records, condition, recalls, and local asking price before buying.

How to use this shortlist

The list is not a head-to-head ranking: no single cited source establishes these as the ten most reliable Japanese luxury cars. CARFAX’s August 17, 2026 ranking analyzes maintenance records for 2019–2023 vehicles and estimates unexpected-repair likelihood over five years. Its 9.0% luxury-car segment average is a comparison point for the CARFAX figures below, not a prediction for any one car. CARFAX’s 2026 luxury-car ranking and its luxury-SUV ranking also report the share of a model line still on the road, but those figures begin in different years and should not be compared as though each covers the same time span.

iSeeCars scores are different: they combine reliability, resale value, and safety. They can help distinguish options within a category, but they are not directly interchangeable with CARFAX repair-likelihood estimates. iSeeCars’ Japanese luxury-car comparison supplies the scores used for several picks below.

Ten Japanese luxury cars to consider used

1. Acura RDX

The RDX is the SUV pick with the lowest repair-likelihood figure in this list: CARFAX estimated a 2.5% average unexpected-repair likelihood for 2019–2023 models in its 2026 analysis. CARFAX also reported that 92.9% of the RDX model line remained on the road since 2007. It says reliability improved by the end of the second generation in 2018 and the RDX has since ranked among its more reliable luxury SUVs. The survival figure covers a different span from the 2019–2023 repair estimate; neither establishes the condition of a specific RDX.

2. Lexus IS

For a compact luxury sedan, the IS combines a low CARFAX estimate with a long-running model line. CARFAX’s 2026 analysis put the average unexpected-repair likelihood for 2019–2023 models at 2.8%; it reported 69.4% of the model line still on the road since 2006. CARFAX describes its reliability as consistent. The survival statistic’s start year differs from those for other models, so use it as context rather than a direct durability contest.

3. Lexus UX

The UX is a smaller luxury crossover option. CARFAX estimated a 2.8% average unexpected-repair likelihood for 2019–2023 models in 2026 and reported 90.4% of the model line still on the road since 2019. CARFAX noted a reliability dip in 2023 following the introduction of a new infotainment system. If you are considering a 2023 example, pay close attention to system operation and the vehicle’s service history.

4. Lexus GX

For buyers who need a larger SUV, CARFAX’s 2026 analysis estimated a 3.0% average unexpected-repair likelihood for 2019–2023 GX models. It reported 87.8% of the model line still on the road since 2006. CARFAX describes reliability as improving after a significant 2020 refresh, then dipping in 2023, the final year of that generation. Check the exact model year and maintenance record rather than assuming the average applies uniformly across the generation.

5. Acura TLX

The TLX is a midsize luxury sedan with a CARFAX 2026 average unexpected-repair likelihood estimate of 4.3% for 2019–2023 models. CARFAX reported that 93.8% of the model line remained on the road since 2015 and describes its reliability as consistently above average over its run. The longevity percentage is model-line context, not a forecast for a used TLX of a particular age or mileage.

6. Infiniti QX50

The QX50 gives crossover shoppers another option. CARFAX estimated a 4.7% average unexpected-repair likelihood for 2019–2023 models in its 2026 analysis and reported 94.1% of the model line still on the road since 2014. CARFAX describes its repair statistics as consistently strong. As with the other survival figures, the starting year and time on the road differ by model.

7. Lexus RC 350

For a luxury coupe, iSeeCars places the RC 350 first in its Japanese luxury small/compact category, with an 8.7/10 quality score. That score reflects reliability, resale value, and safety together; it is not a CARFAX-style estimate of repair likelihood. Compare a candidate’s service history and condition with its asking price before treating the score as a reason to pay more.

8. Lexus ES 350

The ES 350 is a midsize luxury sedan choice. iSeeCars ranks it first in its Japanese luxury midsize category with a 7.8/10 score, combining reliability, resale value, and safety. The score is a category-level comparison, not a model-year-specific repair estimate.

9. Lexus ES 300h

For buyers who want a hybrid sedan, iSeeCars ranks the ES 300h first among Japanese luxury hybrids, with a 7.9/10 score. As with its other scores, the rating combines reliability, resale value, and safety; the source does not provide a matching model-year-specific repair-likelihood figure here. Assess the particular car’s maintenance and condition rather than inferring a repair probability from the score.

10. Acura ILX

The ILX is another compact sedan option. iSeeCars gives it an 8.1/10 score in its Japanese luxury small-car comparison, which includes reliability, resale value, and safety. This is a different measure from CARFAX’s five-year repair-likelihood estimates, and it should not be read as a guarantee for any ILX model year.

What newer dependability data can—and cannot—tell you

JD Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study provides current context, but it measures reported problems, not used-car repair likelihood. The study used responses from 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Across the study, there were 204 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100); the premium-segment average was 217 PP100. Lexus recorded 151 PP100, the lowest score among premium brands. Lower PP100 indicates fewer reported problems. These brand- and segment-level results use a different cohort and method from CARFAX’s model-specific used-vehicle estimates. JD Power’s 2026 study release quotes Jason Norton, its director of auto benchmarking: “As owners hold onto their vehicles longer, the long-term ownership experience matters more than ever.”

Choose by fit, then verify the individual car

Reliability matters to a used-car budget, but it is only one part of the purchase. Pick a vehicle that fits your space and driving needs, then evaluate the specific example you might buy.

  • Match the class to your use: Compare sedan, coupe, and SUV options for passenger space, cargo needs, and everyday driving before narrowing by reliability evidence.
  • Compare like measures: Use CARFAX repair-likelihood figures against its own segment average. Treat iSeeCars quality scores as a separate combined measure, not as equivalent percentages.
  • Review the model year and generation: The CARFAX analysis flags changes for the 2023 UX and GX; check how the specific year you are considering is equipped and maintained.
  • Check the car’s history and condition: Request maintenance records, inspect for signs of damage or neglected service, and have a qualified mechanic conduct a pre-purchase inspection.
  • Use a diagnostic scan as one screening step: An optional OBD-II scanner can read some diagnostic codes, but it cannot establish reliability, uncover every hidden issue, or replace a professional inspection.
  • Check recalls by VIN: Confirm whether the individual vehicle has open recalls rather than assuming a model-level ranking covers safety or recall status.
  • Compare local prices: The cited rankings do not establish current asking prices. Compare nearby listings for the same model year, trim, mileage, and condition before deciding whether a car fits your budget.

Do not treat a current safety award as proof that an older used example has the same rating. IIHS’s 2026 Top Safety Picks list concerns current model-year crashworthiness and crash avoidance, not used-car reliability, and an award for a current model does not automatically apply to every earlier year. IIHS’s current Top Safety Picks list includes models such as the Lexus NX and Infiniti QX60, but neither is a substitute for checking the safety information for the exact vehicle under consideration.
