The best current list is a set of places to investigate for flexible-date deals—not verified under-$1,000 trips. Travel + Leisure’s September 19, 2026 report on Kayak search averages compares round-trip economy airfare with just one hotel night for travel from September 15 through November 15, 2026. That is not the price of a seven-night vacation.
For your own budget, add round-trip airfare, seven nights of lodging, meals, local transportation, activities, baggage and other airline fees, taxes, and any insurance or entry costs you intend to include. Prices vary by departure airport, dates, party size, lodging standard, and booking conditions.
What does the $1,000 budget include?
A budget is meaningful only when its components are clear. The destination figures below cover average economy round-trip airfare and an average hotel-night price reported by Travel + Leisure from Kayak searches. The combined figure is airfare plus one hotel night. It excludes the other six nights of a weeklong stay, as well as meals, local transportation, activities, baggage fees, taxes, and other trip costs.
Travel + Leisure published the comparison on September 19, 2026, for a September 15–November 15, 2026 travel window. These are source-reported averages, not guaranteed fares or quotes for a particular traveler. They do not establish that a full week in any listed destination costs $1,000 or less. 10 destinations to investigate for flexible-date deals
The table lists the report’s average airfare, average hotel-night price, and airfare-plus-one-night comparison. The last column is not a weekly total. The seven-night arithmetic illustration multiplies the reported hotel-night average by seven and adds reported airfare; it is not an observed package price and excludes all other costs.
| Destination | Average round-trip airfare | Average hotel night | Airfare + one night | Airfare + seven hotel nights* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guadalajara, Mexico | $371 | $91 | $462 | $1,008 |
| Calgary, Canada | $400 | $122 | $522 | $1,254 |
| Bogotá, Colombia | $534 | $80 | $614 | $1,094 |
| Medellín, Colombia | $532 | $94 | $626 | $1,190 |
| Toronto, Canada | $395 | $243 | $638 | $2,096 |
| Mexico City, Mexico | $463 | $191 | $654 | $1,800 |
| Cartagena, Colombia | $524 | $143 | $667 | $1,525 |
| Halifax, Canada | $509 | $203 | $712 | $1,930 |
| Simpson Bay, St. Maarten | $518 | $203 | $721 | $1,939 |
| Vancouver, Canada | $420 | $305 | $725 | $2,555 |
All source-reported airfare and hotel averages are from Kayak search data as reported by Travel + Leisure in 2026 for the stated fall travel window. *The seven-night column is arithmetic based on those averages, not a quoted or verified itinerary price; it excludes meals, transfers, activities, fees, and other costs. Lower reported lodging averages still do not guarantee a $1,000 week
Guadalajara, Bogotá, and Medellín have the lowest reported hotel-night averages in this group. Yet the illustrative airfare-plus-seven-night calculations are $1,008, $1,094, and $1,190, respectively—before meals, transport, activities, or fees. They may be worth checking if you can find cheaper lodging or a lower fare for your dates, but the averages alone do not prove that a complete week fits the cap.
Airfare-plus-lodging arithmetic rises quickly elsewhere
For the other destinations, the same calculation ranges from $1,254 for Calgary to $2,555 for Vancouver. Calgary is described as a gateway to Banff and the Canadian Rockies; hotel costs in urban destinations such as Toronto and Vancouver differ substantially. These estimates are useful for spotting the effect of lodging over a week, not for ranking destinations by guaranteed trip affordability.
Account for seasonal conditions
Travel + Leisure notes that Cartagena’s fall rainy season and St. Maarten’s overlap with Atlantic hurricane season. Check conditions for your dates and understand your booking’s cancellation and change terms before paying.
How to check whether your own week can stay under $1,000
- Set the trip definition. Decide whether the cap includes only airfare and lodging or also meals, local transport, activities, baggage, taxes, insurance, and entry costs. Record the party size and whether you will share a room.
- Choose your real departure airport and dates. A national or destination average is not your fare. Compare round-trip economy flights for your home airport and the dates you can actually travel, including any baggage or other airline charges.
- Price all seven nights. Use the same lodging standard and room-sharing assumption for each destination. Multiply a per-night rate by seven only when it applies to all seven nights; include taxes and fees in the lodging total.
- Add the rest of the trip. Estimate meals, ground transportation, activities, and any other costs included in your definition. Add a contingency if your budget cannot absorb a fare change or an unexpected expense.
- Compare like with like. Put each destination’s airfare, seven-night lodging, and other included spending in separate lines. Keep travel dates and party size consistent, and treat a result under $1,000 as a quote for that itinerary—not a general price for the destination.
Why cheap-flight lists are not weekly vacation budgets
A separate Travel + Leisure report published January 13, 2026, relays Skyscanner’s average round-trip airfare-only ranking for 2026: Las Vegas ($232), San Salvador ($282), Miami ($284), Kahului/Maui ($329), Orlando ($353), San Juan ($365), Punta Cana ($375), Mexico City ($402), Cancún ($411), and Milan ($559). Those figures concern average round-trip airfare, not matched lodging or full trip totals. They can suggest routes to investigate, but they cannot show whether a week fits a $1,000 budget. Another publisher, Explore Every Country, gives illustrative budgets for seven-to-ten-night trips, including $900–$1,200 for Oaxaca plus Mexico City and $1,000–$1,300 for Cartagena plus Medellín. These are secondary publisher estimates; their live-booking basis and methodology are not established here, so treat them as estimates rather than verified prices.
