The examples range from provocative advertising to protests and publicity pranks, all aimed at drawing attention to animal-rights issues.
What PETA’s list does—and doesn’t—establish
PETA published its list on September 4, 2009, and updated the page on April 2, 2024. The accounts below are PETA’s descriptions of its own campaigns and actions; the available sources do not independently verify every episode or provide a neutral measure of how outrageous each was. TIME offers outside reporting on one especially controversial campaign, discussed below. PETA’s retrospective TIME’s account
The ten stunts in PETA’s retrospective
1. The Wienermobile takeover
PETA says an activist dressed as a pig climbed aboard an Oscar Mayer Wienermobile during a children’s singing talent search and was apprehended by authorities. The stunt used an unexpected interruption and a pig costume to draw attention to the treatment of animals raised for food.
2. A Jeffrey Dahmer-themed vegetarian ad
PETA describes a 1991 advertisement that compared public reactions to cannibalism with the killing of animals in slaughterhouses. The organization calls it arguably its most controversial advertisement. The point was to provoke a comparison, but the subject matter made the approach deliberately disturbing.

3. “KKKrazy About Dogs”
PETA’s campaign ad placed a Ku Klux Klan figure at an American Kennel Club meeting to criticize dog breeding. The imagery linked the organization’s opposition to breeding practices with a symbol of racist violence, a provocative choice intended to condemn what PETA saw as harmful treatment of dogs.
4. “Milk Gone Wild”
PETA says Super Bowl censors rejected its parody, after which visitors reportedly crashed the organization’s website. The retrospective does not specify a date or provide independent confirmation of the reported website outage.
5. “Unhappy Mother’s Day”
In London, a pregnant activist appeared nude to protest gestation crates used for pregnant pigs. The demonstration used nudity and a Mother’s Day framing to connect confinement in animal agriculture with pregnancy and motherhood.

PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk publicized unusual provisions in her will, including proposed uses for parts of her body, as a protest aimed at Ringling Bros. and its treatment of elephants. The tactic used her own planned posthumous arrangements as a symbolic challenge to the circus’s practices.
8. “Putting the ‘Ma’ in ‘Vermont’”
PETA asked Ben & Jerry’s to make ice cream with human breast milk. The proposal generated public debate, according to PETA’s retrospective, which does not detail the company’s response.

9. “Faux Father Furor”
At Gianfranco Ferré’s 2004 Milan fashion show, PETA vice president Dan Mathews entered dressed as a priest and leapt onto the catwalk to protest fur. The protest interrupted a fashion event to direct attention to animal fur in clothing.
10. “Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur”
PETA’s retrospective includes its anti-fur campaign in the top-ten grouping. The dates describe two different milestones: PETA says the broader ad campaign began in 1990 and ended after three decades, while its milestones page dates the Tokyo protest launch to February 18, 1992. Those dates refer to separate parts of the campaign’s history, not conflicting accounts of one launch. PETA milestones PETA’s 2020 announcement
Why the tactics drew attention—and criticism
The examples span ads, nudity, symbolic props, a fashion-show interruption and publicity-oriented proposals. Their targets included fur, slaughterhouse practices, dog breeding, horse-meat consumption and the treatment of elephants. Some were designed to be startling; that attention-getting approach could also shift debate toward whether the comparison or spectacle was offensive.

The Holocaust-on-Your-Plate campaign
TIME reported that PETA launched this separate campaign in 2003 as an exhibition of eight 60-square-foot panels juxtaposing Nazi death-camp imagery with images of factory farms and slaughterhouses. The Anti-Defamation League and others objected that the comparison trivialized the murder of Jews. TIME also reported that Germany’s high court banned the exhibition and that PETA president Ingrid Newkirk issued an apology almost two years later. These details are TIME’s 2009 account; the court ruling itself is not among the cited sources. TIME’s account
How PETA describes its broader protest campaigns
Not every PETA campaign in the organization’s historical material appears in its ten-stunt list. For example, PETA says its McDonald’s campaign involved more than 400 demonstrations in more than 23 countries over 11 months, after which McDonald’s agreed to basic animal-welfare improvements. Those counts and the reported outcome are PETA’s own account, not independently audited figures. PETA milestones PETA’s McDonald’s campaign history
