Google’s 2024 retirements ranged from a complete shutdown to products that simply left the store. Google Podcasts and Keen ended as services; Dropcam lost core functionality; Play Movies & TV was folded into other apps; and several devices or interfaces were discontinued without ending every related Google service. This is a ten-entry list, not a strict count of individual products: the Pixel entry groups three phones—the original Pixel Fold, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro.
1. Google Podcasts
Status: standalone app shut down; subscriptions could be moved or exported. Google ended Google Podcasts in 2024 and directed listeners to YouTube Music. The service became unavailable in April, according to contemporary coverage. Google offered a tool to transfer podcast subscriptions to YouTube Music and an OPML export for use with another podcast app. Those options addressed subscriptions, not necessarily downloaded episodes, listening history, or show-specific settings. YouTube Music was the successor, but it was not an identical app experience, and availability and migration options varied by market and platform. YouTube Music Help has information about podcast features and migration.

2. Chromecast hardware
Status: hardware line discontinued; Google Cast continued. Google retired the Chromecast hardware line in 2024 and introduced Google TV Streamer as its successor. This did not end Google Cast: compatible devices and apps could still cast content. Existing Chromecast devices did not stop working simply because Google discontinued the line. The transition was from a relatively simple HDMI dongle to a more capable set-top-box format, so Google TV Streamer was not a like-for-like replacement for people seeking only basic casting. Google’s product information is available at the Google Store.
3. Google Play Movies & TV
Status: storefront and app consolidated; purchased content generally remained accessible. Google completed the shutdown of Play Movies & TV during January 2024, moving movie and television access to Google TV or YouTube depending on device and market. The app and storefront disappeared, but Google did not simply erase users’ purchases. Where to find a library and how to rent or buy varied across Android, iOS, smart TVs, Android TV, and the web. Check Google TV Help and YouTube Help for platform-specific instructions.

4. Dropcam and Dropcam Pro
Status: hard support cutoff. On April 8, 2024, Google ended support for Dropcam and Dropcam Pro. Owners could no longer use the Nest app to view live streams, receive notifications, check camera status, or change settings. This was not merely the end of sales: the loss of core app functions made the cameras effectively unusable as supported security cameras. The available replacement path was newer Nest camera hardware; that was not a seamless continuation for every owner. Consult Google Nest Help for support information.
5. Google Jamboard
Status: device updates ended; app service later ended. Jamboard devices stopped receiving automatic updates after September 30, 2024, and the Jamboard app went out of service on December 31, 2024. The change affected schools, businesses, and other Workspace users with collaborative boards. Google pointed users toward third-party whiteboard tools and migration options, but the shutdown made it important to export or otherwise preserve boards before access ended. The device-update date and app-service end date are separate milestones. See Google Jamboard Help for product and migration guidance.

6. VPN by Google One
Status: subscription VPN discontinued June 20, 2024; other Google VPN offerings remained separate. Google ended the VPN included with Google One on June 20, 2024, citing low usage in contemporary reporting. This retirement applied to VPN by Google One, not every VPN service or feature associated with Google. VPN functionality continued in some Pixel contexts and through Google Fi, subject to the relevant device, country, and service. Google One subscribers who relied on its VPN needed to choose another VPN rather than assume that Pixel or Fi coverage applied to them. See Google One Help and Google Fi Help for their respective offerings.
7. Gmail Basic HTML View
Status: legacy interface removed; Gmail Standard View remained. Google discontinued Basic HTML View in 2024 and redirected users to Gmail Standard View. The lighter interface had been useful on slow connections, older hardware or browsers, and in constrained computing environments. Standard View offers more features but is heavier and is not functionally identical. People who depended on the simpler interface may need to adjust browser or accessibility settings, or use another mail client; Basic HTML View should not be described as an officially designated accessibility product without supporting Google documentation. See Gmail Help.

8. Stack
Status: experimental document-scanning app discontinued. Stack, an app associated with Google’s Area 120 incubator and DocAI team, could scan documents into PDFs, organize them into “stacks,” and recognize details such as bill due dates. Support for the legacy scanner reportedly ended in the fourth week of September 2024. The available information does not establish a clearly equivalent first-party replacement or confirm that all stored files and recognition metadata transferred automatically. Users with documents in Stack needed to check the app’s export or backup options rather than assume that those files had moved to Google Drive. Google’s general support information is at Google Support.
9. Original Pixel Fold, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro
Status: removed from Google’s retail lineup, not immediately unsupported. After launching newer hardware, including the Pixel 9 family and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Google stopped selling the original Pixel Fold, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro through its lineup in 2024. These are three separate devices grouped here as one hardware-retirement entry. Their removal from sale did not make them unusable or end software support immediately; update eligibility continued under Google’s published policies. Refurbished and third-party devices could remain available independently of Google’s own store. Check the Pixel Phone Help update policy and Google Store for current lineup information.

10. Keen
Status: service shut down and user data reportedly deleted. Keen, an Area 120 experiment for collecting and discovering links and interests, closed on March 24, 2024. Contemporary coverage reported that posts, uploads, links, follows, comments, and related data were deleted. No direct replacement or export path is established in the available product information, making Keen unlike services where subscriptions or purchases were migrated into a successor. Its closure was a full service shutdown, not a rebranding.
What these retirements meant for users
Google’s 2024 list combines different outcomes, so the key practical question is what changed for each product: whether access ended, a device stopped being supported, content moved, or a sales listing disappeared. The most consequential data questions involved Keen’s reported deletion, Jamboard board migration, Stack document preservation, and the limits of what podcast subscription transfer carried over. Google’s retirement of Chromecast hardware also left Google Cast intact, while ending VPN by Google One did not erase separate Pixel and Fi VPN offerings.
