The right fix depends on where the card is saved. For App Store purchases and Apple subscriptions, use Settings > [your name] > Payment & Shipping. For Apple Pay, use Wallet on iPhone or Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay on iPad. If an old expiration date appears only in a checkout form, update the separate AutoFill card record.
First, identify which card needs updating

These are separate records: updating Apple Account billing does not necessarily update Apple Pay or AutoFill. Some financial institutions may automatically update payment information for Apple media purchases and subscriptions, but this is not guaranteed; check the saved details if you received a warning. Menu wording can vary by language, region, and software release.
Update the card for App Store and subscription billing
On either iPhone or iPad, edit the Apple Account payment method in Settings. The current Apple support instructions use the term “Apple Account”; older screens or references may say “Apple ID.”
- Open Settings and tap [your name].
- Tap Payment & Shipping. Authenticate if asked.
- Tap the existing credit or debit card, then tap Edit.
- Update the expiration date, security code, billing address, or other requested details.
- Tap Done.

If the card cannot be edited
Add the replacement card before removing the expired one so the account has a valid method available:
- Go to Settings > [your name] > Payment & Shipping.
- Tap Add Payment Method, enter the replacement details, and tap Done.
- Tap Edit, delete the expired card with the red delete button, and tap Remove.
Apple says you can also remove the old card and add it again with updated billing details if needed. Apple’s payment-method instructions.
Set which Apple Account payment method is charged first
If you have more than one payment method, Apple attempts charges in the order shown. Move a valid replacement above the expired card if it should be tried first. Apple’s instructions for adding and reordering payment methods.
- Open Settings > [your name] > Payment & Shipping.
- Tap Edit.
- Touch and hold a payment method, then drag it higher or lower in the list.
- Tap Done.
Fix a declined payment or an unpaid Apple balance
If Apple says the payment method is declined
Add a different valid payment method, remove the expired or declined method if permitted, and retry the purchase or let Apple retry the subscription charge. If the replacement is declined too, contact the bank or card issuer. Apple says it does not receive the specific reason for a bank’s decision; the issuer may need to allow online, international, recurring, or other transactions. Apple’s declined-payment guidance.

If you see “Billing problem with previous purchase” or “Verification required”
These messages can mean an earlier purchase remains unpaid. Add a valid payment method, then check the order:
- Open Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account > Purchase History.
- Select the order marked Amount You Owe.
- Pay with your Apple Account balance or a valid payment method.
Apple may prevent new purchases or removal of the old card until the balance is settled. Apple’s steps for resolving an unpaid balance.
Replace an expired Apple Pay card on iPhone
If the bank issued a replacement with a new card number, add that card as a new Apple Pay card rather than assuming that changing the expiry date is enough. On iPhone:
- Open Wallet and tap Add Card.
- Choose Debit or Credit Card, then tap Continue.
- Scan the card or choose Enter Card Details Manually.
- Complete any verification requested by the bank or card issuer.
Some issuers require extra authentication or their banking app. Apple Pay availability and features depend on the country or region, participating issuer, device, and supported software. Apple’s guide to adding a card.

Remove the old card or change the default
To remove an old card from the iPhone, open Wallet, tap the card, tap More (…), choose Card Details, scroll down, and tap Remove Card. To choose the default card, open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Transaction Defaults > Default Card and select the replacement. Apple’s card-management instructions.
Removing a card from one device does not necessarily remove it from another. Check each device where it was added. Apple’s device-specific card guidance.
Replace an expired Apple Pay card on iPad
Use Settings on iPad rather than the iPhone Wallet path:
- Open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Tap Add Card and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Complete any verification requested by the issuer.
To remove the old card, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, tap the card, and tap Remove Card. To select a default card, open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Transaction Defaults > Default Card. Apple’s add-card instructions and card-management instructions.

Update billing or contact details for Apple Pay
A billing address is distinct from the card number and expiration date. On iPhone, open Wallet, select the card, tap More (…) > Card Details > Billing Address. On iPad, open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, select the card, and tap Billing Address.
To change Apple Pay contact or shipping information, use Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Pay Defaults on either device. Apple Pay card settings.

If Apple Pay and subscription billing work but a web form still inserts the old expiry date, update AutoFill separately on iPhone:
- Open Wallet, tap More (…), then tap AutoFill.
- Authenticate, select the card, and tap Edit.
- Update the stored card information and save it.
You can also remove the old AutoFill entry and enter the replacement details when prompted. Removing a card from AutoFill does not remove it from Apple Pay. Apple’s AutoFill guide.

Why you may not be able to remove the old card
Apple can require at least one payment method to remain on file if you have an active subscription such as iCloud+, an unpaid balance, or Family Sharing purchase sharing with you as the organizer. Add a replacement first, settle any balance, and keep a valid method on file while the requirement applies. Apple’s payment-method removal guidance.
If the replacement card will not add to Apple Pay
Apple Pay card approval is controlled by the card issuer, not Apple. If setup fails, check the following before trying again:
- Confirm that your device and card issuer are supported in your country or region.
- Install the latest supported iOS or iPadOS available for your device.
- Make sure you are signed in to your Apple Account and have device authentication set up, such as a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID.
- Complete any issuer verification, including a prompt in the bank’s app.
- Check network connectivity and try again; if the issuer still rejects setup, contact the bank.

- For Apple Account billing, verify the new details under Settings > [your name] > Payment & Shipping.
- If payment priority matters, confirm the valid method is in the intended position in the list.
- For Apple Pay, confirm the replacement card appears in Wallet on iPhone or Wallet & Apple Pay settings on iPad, and complete issuer verification.
- If the issue was a web form, confirm AutoFill now shows the updated expiry date.
- Retry the purchase or subscription payment; for an unpaid order, confirm the Amount You Owe item is paid.
