What Microsoft planned to change
Microsoft reportedly planned to end the free Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offer for most of its roughly 238,000 employees beginning in January 2024. The Verge described the benefit as one employees had received for years, dating back to the launch of the Ultimate option in 2019. Its coverage said employees objected to losing a perk tied to Microsoft’s gaming business. The report did not publish a complete eligibility policy, so “most employees” should not be read as every worker, contractor, or subsidiary employee.
What Phil Spencer confirmed
After employee complaints, Spencer reportedly intervened and posted a message on Microsoft’s internal Viva platform. He said there would be “no change” to Game Pass availability in 2024, and employees who already had access to the offer would continue to have it. The confirmation reversed the proposed 2024 removal; it did not announce a new benefit for all workers.

The Verge characterized the proposal as appearing to be a benefits or HR decision, noting Spencer was initially unaware of the planned change. That is reporting context, not a published explanation from Microsoft about which team initiated the proposal or why it was made.
What “keep the perk” did—and did not—mean
The commitment was limited to Game Pass availability in 2024 for employees who already had access. It does not prove that every Microsoft employee qualified, that the offer was permanent, or that the policy remained unchanged after 2024. The available report also does not establish eligibility for contractors, interns, temporary staff, employees in particular subsidiaries or regions, new hires, or family members.

Nor does the reporting specify employee-account rules, auto-renewal, transferability, what happens when employment ends, tax treatment, or whether the internal entitlement works exactly like a retail subscription. Those details should not be inferred from the public consumer plan.

Was the reversal about consumer prices?
