There is no universally cheapest payment gateway in 2026. The right choice depends on where you sell, your average order value, monthly volume, customers’ preferred payment methods, and how much technical control you need.

For most U.S. businesses, Stripe is the strongest all-purpose option for custom online stores and SaaS. PayPal Checkout is best when wallet recognition matters, Square is strongest for online and in-person selling, and Shopify Payments is the natural starting point for Shopify merchants. Established businesses should also compare Helcim and custom interchange-plus quotes before choosing a flat-rate provider.

Prices and availability below use the United States as the baseline. Fees vary by country, plan, payment method, card type, industry, and contract. Published pricing was checked August 16, 2026; verify the provider’s current terms before signing up.

Square Online plus in-person sales Varies by channel and plan Core POS software can start free Less suited to complex international checkout
Shopify Payments Shopify stores Depends on Shopify plan and location No additional gateway fee; Shopify subscription still applies Availability and third-party fees depend on plan and country
Helcim Transparent interchange-plus pricing Interchange + published markup No monthly account fee advertised Final cost depends on card mix
Authorize.net Traditional gateway integrations Depends on gateway or merchant-account model Can include gateway fees More concepts and fees to compare
Braintree Developer-led PayPal and card integration 2.89% + $0.29 standard card/wallet signal Depends on product and agreement Requires more development
Adyen International and enterprise payments Fixed processing fee plus payment-method fee No standard setup or monthly fee advertised Usually sales-led and custom priced
GoCardless Recurring bank debit Payment-method and country specific Check current plan Not a replacement for instant card acceptance
Custom enterprise processing High-volume merchants Negotiated flat or interchange-plus pricing Contract dependent Quotes may include minimums and reserves

Rates are signals, not universal quotes. Online, in-person, keyed, ACH, wallet, international, and recurring transactions are not directly comparable.

What is a payment gateway?

A payment gateway securely transmits payment information from a checkout to the payment-processing system. In a typical card transaction:

  1. The customer enters card or wallet details.
  2. The checkout sends an encrypted payment request.
  3. The gateway passes it to a processor or acquiring bank.
  4. The card network and issuing bank approve or decline it.
  5. The merchant receives an authorization result.
  6. The transaction settles to the merchant’s bank account after fees, refunds, disputes, and other adjustments.

The terms are often used loosely. A processor handles authorization and settlement. An acquirer is the bank or financial institution that receives card transactions for the merchant. A merchant account is the account used to receive card funds. A payment facilitator, such as many modern all-in-one platforms, onboards merchants under its own processing arrangement.

A digital wallet stores payment credentials and gives customers a faster checkout. Buy now, pay later providers split or finance a purchase for the customer and charge the merchant according to separate terms. A merchant of record may also take responsibility for the customer transaction, tax handling, refunds, and payment risk. That is different from merely providing checkout technology.

1. Stripe: best overall for custom online businesses

Stripe is the most versatile choice for custom ecommerce, SaaS, subscriptions, invoices, payment links, and developer-built applications. It offers hosted checkout, APIs, SDKs, webhooks, recurring billing, wallets, fraud tools, and numerous payment methods.

Stripe’s standard U.S. pricing lists 2.9% + $0.30 for an eligible successful domestic-card transaction, with additional charges possible for manually entered cards, international cards, currency conversion, disputes, and particular payment methods. Standard pricing lists no setup or monthly fee. See Stripe’s current pricing.

Choose it if: you need a flexible API, subscriptions, payment links, or an international expansion path. Look elsewhere first if: you process substantial volume and have not requested custom pricing, or you need a POS-first system.

2. PayPal Checkout: best for consumer wallet recognition

PayPal Checkout adds a familiar PayPal experience and can support cards, Venmo in eligible U.S. contexts, Pay Later, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other methods. PayPal’s U.S. checkout page lists 2.89% + $0.29 for certain card and alternative-payment transactions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wallet, international, currency-conversion, and other transaction types can have different rates. PayPal may also hold funds or impose reserves based on risk. For many merchants, PayPal works best alongside a card processor rather than as the only checkout option. Review the current PayPal Checkout terms.

3. Square: best for simple online and in-person selling

Square combines online payments, POS, invoices, payment links, appointments, hardware, and business software. It is particularly practical for retailers, restaurants, salons, consultants, and other businesses that take payments both online and face to face.

Square’s fees vary by transaction channel, plan, and payment method. Its U.S. documentation says cards issued outside the country of the Square account incur a 1.5% international transaction fee in addition to base processing fees. Use the Square fee schedule rather than applying an in-person rate to online checkout.

Clover Compact Payment Terminal - Requires New Merchant Processing Account Through Powering POS.
  • The Clover Compact and Clover Mini /Station sync with each other through the Clover Dashboard and cloud-based network. This allows you to manage transactions, track sales, and access business data across both devices seamlessly. Plug in, not battery/mobile. Requires New Processing account through Powering POS. (US, PR, USVI). CANNOT be used with a different Processor. Rate match guarantee. Contact us for questions

Choose it if: you want minimal technical setup and one system for POS, invoices, and online payments. Look elsewhere first if: you need a deeply customized checkout or extensive international acquiring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Shopify Payments: best for Shopify stores

Shopify Payments is built into Shopify, reducing integration work and keeping payment management inside the Shopify admin. It is usually the simplest starting point for an eligible Shopify merchant and supports the platform’s native checkout and Shop Pay experience.

Card rates depend on the Shopify plan, location, and transaction channel. Shopify Payments avoids an additional gateway fee, but merchants still pay for their Shopify plan. Using an external processor may trigger Shopify’s additional transaction fees. Check the Shopify Payments page and the payment-processing guidance for your country and plan.

Choose it if: you already sell through Shopify and want the least configuration. Look elsewhere first if: processor portability, unusual business categories, or a country unsupported by Shopify Payments is central to your operation.

5. Helcim: best transparent option for established small businesses

Helcim advertises no monthly account fees, no contracts, no minimums, and interchange-plus pricing. Its published U.S. and Canadian schedule lists online or keyed pricing at interchange + 0.50% + $0.25 for monthly card volume from $0 to $50,000, with lower markups at higher volume. It also lists ACH/EFT pricing of 0.5% + $0.25, subject to a cap and terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interchange-plus separates the underlying card cost from the provider’s markup, but your effective rate still depends on rewards cards, commercial cards, transaction method, and other card categories. Helcim lists an additional 0.4% for recurring payments. Its published pricing is a useful comparison point, not a guarantee that it beats every flat-rate provider.

Choose it if: you have steady volume and want statement-level pricing transparency. Look elsewhere first if: you need the widest global coverage or the simplest possible plug-and-play integration.

6. Authorize.net: best traditional gateway for existing merchant accounts

Authorize.net supports hosted payment forms, APIs, recurring billing, eCheck, cards, wallets, and broad ecommerce integrations. Its documentation lists support for Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB, UnionPay, Apple Pay, PayPal, and eChecks.

It can be used with an existing merchant account or through an all-in-one processing arrangement. The gateway-only model may include monthly and per-transaction charges in addition to the separate processor’s fees. Compare both the Authorize.net pricing options and its supported payment methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if: you already have a processor relationship or need a mature gateway with recurring billing. Look elsewhere first if: you want the shortest path from signup to a no-code checkout.

7. Braintree: best developer-oriented PayPal alternative

Braintree, a PayPal company, gives developers one platform for cards, wallets, PayPal, eligible U.S. Venmo transactions, tokenization, and custom web or mobile integrations. Its U.S. standard pricing lists 2.89% + $0.29 for cards and third-party digital wallets, plus 1% for non-U.S.-issued cards and another 1% for non-USD presentation. ACH direct debit is listed at 0.75%, capped at $5 per transaction, and the listed chargeback fee is $15.

Availability requires application and approval. Braintree says established businesses may qualify for custom flat rates, interchange-plus, or discounted pricing. See the Braintree fee page.

Choose it if: you have development resources and want PayPal plus cards in a customizable integration. Look elsewhere first if: you need turnkey POS or payment links without engineering work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Adyen: best for international and enterprise merchants

Adyen combines acquiring, online and in-person payments, local payment methods, unified reporting, and enterprise risk tools. Its pricing model uses a fixed processing fee plus a fee determined by the payment method. It also offers Interchange++ pricing, which passes underlying interchange costs through to the merchant.

The fixed fee is only one component. Payment-method charges, interchange, scheme fees, cross-border costs, currency conversion, risk products, contract terms, and settlement arrangements can materially change the total. Adyen is generally better suited to international or high-volume operations than to a tiny domestic business. Review its pricing model and request a complete quote.

9. GoCardless: best for recurring bank payments

GoCardless is a specialist option for direct debit and recurring bank payments, including subscriptions, memberships, B2B invoices, and utility-style collections. It should be considered alongside a card gateway rather than treated as a full replacement when customers need instant card authorization.

Bank-debit confirmation times, dispute rules, supported schemes, coverage, and fees vary by country. Review GoCardless pricing and coverage for your market before relying on it as a primary collection method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Custom-priced enterprise processing: best for high-volume merchants

At significant volume, request competing quotes from providers such as Adyen, Stripe Enterprise, Worldpay, Chase Payment Solutions, Global Payments, or Braintree. Custom offers may use interchange-plus pricing, volume discounts, local acquiring, routing controls, or dedicated support.

A lower percentage is not automatically cheaper. Compare the full contract, including fixed fees, minimums, reserves, annual commitments, software, gateway, chargeback, payout, currency, and support fees. Ask for a statement-level analysis using your actual card mix and transaction history.

How payment-gateway fees really work

Use this formula to estimate your total cost:

Total processing cost = (transaction volume × percentage rate) + (number of transactions × fixed fee) + international fees + currency-conversion fees + payment-method fees + monthly software fees + chargebacks and other service fees

For 100 domestic online card transactions averaging $50 at 2.9% + $0.30:

Rank #4
SumUp Terminal SumUp Touch POS Terminal – Accepts Contactless, Chip & PIN, Apple & Google Pay + Instant Printing, Long Battery, No Monthly Fees
  • Effortless payments and printing: Accept card payments and print payment receipts on the spot with the built-in 40 mm thermal printer.
  • Faster sales processing: Use pre-set menus and catalogs to make transactions faster and smoother for you and your customers.
  • Reliable and portable: Featuring a 6.5" HD touchscreen made from Corning Gorilla Glass and a powerful battery that lasts all day.
  • Seamless connectivity: Stay connected with free mobile data and WiFi, ensuring uninterrupted transactions.
  • Real-time payment tracking: Monitor payments and issue refunds right from your device, so you're always in control.
  • Gross volume: 100 × $50 = $5,000
  • Percentage fees: $5,000 × 2.9% = $145
  • Fixed fees: 100 × $0.30 = $30
  • Estimated processing fees: $175
  • Effective rate: 3.5%

The advertised rate is 2.9%, but your actual cost is 3.5% because the fixed fee is spread over only $50 per transaction. At a $10 average order, a $0.30 fixed fee alone equals 3% of the sale. Low-ticket merchants should consider ACH or direct debit where appropriate, product bundles that raise average order value, and payment-method-specific pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fair comparison, model at least these scenarios: $1,000 monthly volume at a $25 average order; $10,000 at $100; $50,000 at $100; and $250,000 at $250. Also model international-card share, recurring billing, ACH payments, refunds, chargebacks, and mixed online/in-person sales. Do not compare an online domestic-card rate with a card-present rate or an ACH rate.

Costs that headline rates often omit

  • International cards and foreign exchange: cross-border surcharges and conversion fees can substantially increase cost. Stripe lists additional charges for international cards and currency conversion; Braintree lists 1% for non-U.S.-issued cards and 1% for non-USD transactions.
  • Refunds: “free refunds” may only mean no new refund fee. Stripe says original processing fees are generally not returned for most payment methods, and Braintree says transaction fees are not returned for refunded transactions.
  • Chargebacks: Stripe and Braintree list $15 dispute or chargeback fees. Helcim lists $0 for cases resolved in the merchant’s favor and $15 if lost. Also consider lost revenue, staff time, reserves, and account risk.
  • Subscriptions: check billing surcharges, card-updater features, retries, proration, tax tools, and stored-credential migration. Helcim lists an additional 0.4% per recurring transaction.
  • Platform fees: Shopify merchants using an external provider may pay Shopify’s additional transaction fees on top of processor charges.
  • Payouts: instant payouts, currency conversion, reserves, and delayed initial payouts may carry additional cost or cash-flow risk.
  • Hardware and software: POS terminals, readers, inventory tools, appointments, invoicing, fraud products, and premium support may be separate.

Which gateway is cheapest for each business type?

  • Occasional payment links: Stripe Payment Links, PayPal Checkout, or Square are simple starting points.
  • Low-ticket sales: calculate the fixed fee carefully; ACH, direct debit, bundles, or higher average order values may help.
  • Shopify: start with Shopify Payments if eligible, then compare the full cost of alternatives including Shopify’s additional transaction fee.
  • WooCommerce or WordPress: Stripe, PayPal, Square, and Authorize.net all offer integration paths; choose based on plugin quality and payment methods.
  • Custom subscriptions: compare Stripe and Braintree, including retries, card updating, billing tools, and migration support.
  • Invoices and deposits: Square, Stripe, PayPal, and ACH specialists can work well for service businesses; compare invoice tools and settlement timing.
  • Online and physical retail: Square is usually the simplest unified system.
  • Recurring bank payments: consider GoCardless alongside a card gateway.
  • International ecommerce: compare Adyen and Stripe with attention to local methods, local acquiring, FX, settlement, and compliance.
  • High volume: obtain Helcim and custom interchange-plus quotes using actual processing statements.
  • High-risk or regulated industries: use a processor that explicitly underwrites your category. Standard accounts may restrict supplements, gambling, adult content, firearms, financial services, cryptocurrency, regulated medical products, or delayed-fulfillment businesses.

Easy setup: what it actually means

“Easy setup” has several parts. A provider may let you open an account online while still requiring identity checks, beneficial-owner details, a tax ID, bank verification, product information, a website, fulfillment evidence, bank statements, or manual underwriting.

Before choosing, confirm:

  • Whether your country and industry are supported.
  • Whether hosted checkout, payment links, plugins, or no-code tools are available.
  • Whether Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, or your platform is supported.
  • Whether subscriptions, ACH, wallets, BNPL, and local methods work in your market.
  • Whether a sandbox or test mode is available.
  • How stored payment credentials can be migrated.
  • When the first payout is likely and whether initial funds may be held.
  • Whether refunds, webhooks, disputes, and failed payments can be tested before launch.

Fast account creation does not guarantee approval, uninterrupted processing, or immediate payouts. Providers can request documents, establish reserves, delay settlements, restrict products, freeze funds during an investigation, or close accounts for prohibited activity.

Security, PCI compliance, and operational risk

Hosted checkout and tokenized payment fields can reduce the amount of card data your systems touch, but they do not eliminate all PCI responsibilities. You remain responsible for your website, plugins, employee access, devices, passwords, updates, and operational controls.

Before launch, test a successful payment, decline, refund, duplicate webhook, subscription failure, dispute notification, and payout. Keep a backup payment method or contingency plan if payment interruptions would threaten payroll, shipping, or service delivery. For marketplaces, ordinary merchant accounts may be insufficient: onboarding sellers, splitting payments, collecting tax forms, and managing platform liability usually requires products such as Stripe Connect, Adyen for Platforms, or another marketplace solution.

How to choose: a practical scoring model

Score each finalist against your own numbers rather than relying on a universal ranking:

Criterion Suggested weight Questions
Total cost 25% What is the effective rate after fixed, international, refund, dispute, payout, and platform fees?
Setup simplicity 15% Can you launch with hosted checkout, links, or a plugin?
Payment methods 15% Are cards, wallets, ACH, direct debit, BNPL, and local methods covered?
Integration 15% Are APIs, webhooks, sandbox tools, recurring billing, and documentation sufficient?
Cash flow 10% What are payout timing, reserves, holds, and instant-payout costs?
Fraud and disputes 10% What tools, fees, evidence workflows, and liability protections are included?
Scalability 10% Can the provider support your countries, volume, currencies, and future channels?

Setup checklist

  1. Prepare your legal business name, address, tax ID, owner identification, and bank details.
  2. Publish accurate product, shipping, refund, privacy, and contact information.
  3. Confirm your industry and products comply with the provider’s acceptable-use policy.
  4. Choose hosted checkout, payment links, a plugin, or an API integration.
  5. Enable only the payment methods you can fulfill and reconcile.
  6. Run test payments, declines, refunds, recurring failures, and webhook events.
  7. Verify payout timing and bank deposits before accepting a large order.
  8. Document dispute evidence and assign responsibility for responding.
  9. Keep a contingency plan for holds, outages, or account review.

Bottom line

Choose Stripe for custom online businesses and SaaS, PayPal Checkout when customers expect PayPal, Square for unified online and in-person selling, and Shopify Payments for eligible Shopify stores. Compare Helcim when your volume justifies interchange-plus analysis, Authorize.net when you already use a traditional merchant account, Braintree when developers need PayPal and card flexibility, Adyen for international enterprise payments, and GoCardless for recurring bank debit.

The cheapest provider is the one with the lowest effective cost for your transaction mix—not the lowest percentage in an advertisement. Calculate your monthly cost, confirm payout and reserve policies, test the integration, and obtain custom quotes once volume gives you negotiating leverage.
