Ally Bank is the best online bank for most U.S. consumers because it combines checking, savings, money-market accounts, CDs, investing and 24/7 support without monthly maintenance fees or minimum opening deposits. But it is not the best choice for everyone.
Choose Capital One 360 if you want online banking plus some branches and cash-deposit options; SoFi Bank for a checking-and-savings bundle with qualifying direct deposits; Charles Schwab Bank for international ATM use; and Marcus by Goldman Sachs for savings and CDs. The best account depends on more than the advertised APY: you also need to check requirements, ATM access, cash deposits, transfer speed, customer service and the legal bank providing FDIC insurance.
This ranking covers FDIC-insured U.S. banks and bank brands offering consumer deposit accounts. Rates and promotions change frequently. The rate information below was researched through August 9, 2026, and every quoted APY includes its applicable date and conditions. Recheck the bank’s official rate page immediately before opening an account.
10 best online banks at a glance
| Rank | Bank | Best for | Why consider it | Main limitation |

| 2 | Capital One 360 | Best online/in-person hybrid | No-fee checking and savings, a large fee-free ATM network, branches and cash-deposit options | Capital One and Discover deposits must be considered together for FDIC purposes |
| 3 | SoFi Bank | Best checking-and-savings bundle | Competitive qualifying rates, no standard account fees, 55,000-plus Allpoint ATMs | Best rates require eligible deposits; no branches or out-of-network ATM reimbursement |

| 10 | Varo Bank | Best for mobile banking and cash deposits | National bank charter, 40,000-plus fee-free ATMs and participating CVS cash deposits | Direct-deposit requirements and mobile-first limitations |
This is an editorial ordering by overall usefulness, not a list sorted by the highest APY. Bankrate, Forbes and other publishers use different criteria and reach different conclusions. For example, Bankrate’s 2026 comparison identifies different category winners, while Forbes evaluates online banks using product breadth, APY, fees, ATM access, customer experience, digital experience and minimum requirements. Bankrate’s methodology and current picks and Forbes’ online-bank comparison are useful cross-checks.

Independent satisfaction data is also informative but not decisive. In J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Direct Banking Satisfaction Study, Charles Schwab ranked highest for checking satisfaction, followed by American Express and Ally. Marcus ranked highest in high-yield savings, followed by Ally and Chime. J.D. Power also found that federally chartered online banks generally outperform neobanks in customer support and problem resolution. Read the J.D. Power study.
How we chose the best online banks
The ranking evaluates consumer deposit accounts available in the United States. It emphasizes how an account works in practice rather than treating the highest promotional APY as the only important feature.
| Editorial factor | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday usability | 20% | Checking, bill pay, debit controls, mobile check deposit, transfers and common payment features |
| Net practical yield | 20% | The rate a typical customer can actually earn after direct-deposit, balance, monthly-deposit or subscription requirements |
| Fees | 15% | Monthly, overdraft, wire, ATM, stop-payment, cash-deposit, expedited-card and other charges |
| Access to cash | 15% | Fee-free ATMs, reimbursement rules, cash deposits, branches and retail deposit locations |
| Product breadth | 10% | Checking, savings, money-market accounts, CDs, joint accounts, IRAs and related products |
| Customer service | 10% | Phone availability, live support and independent satisfaction evidence |
| Insurance clarity | 10% | Whether the actual insured bank, shared charter and pass-through arrangements are easy to identify |

Current APY snapshot
These rates are a dated snapshot, not evergreen promises. Savings and checking APYs are generally variable. CD rates are fixed after the CD is opened and funded, but the advertised rate can change before then.

The 10 best online banks, reviewed
1. Ally Bank: best overall for most people
Why it stands out: Ally is one of the most complete branchless banking relationships. It offers checking, savings, money-market accounts, CDs, credit cards, auto loans and investing products. Its savings account has no monthly maintenance fee and no minimum opening deposit. Customers can organize savings into up to 30 buckets, schedule recurring transfers, use roundups and enable Surprise Savings, which analyzes linked checking activity for potentially safe-to-save money. Ally also offers phone, chat and email support 24 hours a day.
Cash access: The Spending Account includes access to a large fee-free ATM network. Ally says it can reimburse up to $10 in out-of-network ATM fees per statement cycle. That is useful for occasional withdrawals, but it is not the same as unlimited reimbursement.
Important limitation: Ally has no traditional retail branches. Its savings and money-market accounts have a combined limit of 10 limited withdrawals or transfers per statement cycle. Ally says it does not charge an excess-transaction fee, but it may close an account if the limit is exceeded more than occasionally. Savings withdrawals therefore should be planned rather than treated like checking transactions.

2. Capital One 360: best online/in-person hybrid
Why it stands out: Capital One 360 Performance Savings has no monthly fee and no minimum balance requirement. 360 Checking likewise has no monthly service charge or minimum balance requirement. Customers can use Capital One, MoneyPass and Allpoint ATMs, with current comparisons identifying more than 70,000 fee-free ATMs. Capital One also provides access to branches and Cafés, giving customers more in-person options than most online banks.
Cash access: Customers can deposit cash through eligible Capital One ATMs and participating Add Cash in Store locations. This is a meaningful advantage for cash-heavy workers and anyone who does not want to use a separate local bank.
Important limitation: 360 Performance Savings cannot be accessed directly at an ATM; you must transfer money to checking before withdrawing cash. Cafés are not necessarily full-service branches, so confirm which services a nearby location provides.
Capital One completed its acquisition of Discover on May 18, 2025. Capital One states that Capital One and Discover deposit accounts opened on or after that date count together for FDIC-insurance purposes. Customers with both brands should not assume that separate brand names create separate $250,000 insurance limits. See Capital One’s acquisition disclosure.
Best fit: Someone who wants online rates and tools but also values branches, Cafés or cash deposits.
Skip it if: You want your savings account to have direct ATM access or you already hold substantial Discover deposits and need to manage insurance limits.
See Capital One 360 Performance Savings, 360 Checking and Capital One location types.
3. SoFi Bank: best checking-and-savings bundle
Why it stands out: SoFi Checking and Savings is designed to function as a combined primary account. Under its standard structure, it has no account, monthly, balance or overdraft fees. Based on rate information dated May 28, 2026, eligible customers can earn 3.10% APY on savings and 0.50% APY on checking.
Rate qualification: SoFi defines qualifying access as eligible direct deposit or at least $5,000 in qualifying deposits every 31 days. A promotional 0.70-percentage-point boost was advertised as raising savings to as much as 3.80% APY for up to six months, but separate opening and direct-deposit conditions apply. Treat that boost as a temporary promotion, not the ordinary account rate.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Cash access and insurance: SoFi provides access to more than 55,000 Allpoint ATMs. It does not reimburse out-of-network ATM fees. Its optional SoFi Insured Deposit Program can provide up to $3 million in additional FDIC coverage through participating banks. That additional protection comes through a deposit-placement program; it is not $3 million of coverage at SoFi Bank alone.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Charles Schwab Bank: best for travelers and investors
Why it stands out: Schwab Investor Checking offers unlimited rebates for eligible ATM fees worldwide and no foreign-transaction fee for eligible debit-card use. It integrates with Schwab brokerage accounts, making it convenient for investors who want banking and investing in one ecosystem. Charles Schwab ranked highest for checking satisfaction in J.D. Power’s 2026 direct-banking study.
Travel caveats: Rebates cover eligible cash-withdrawal fees, not every charge associated with an international transaction. Dynamic currency conversion, merchant fees and certain non-cash ATM services may not qualify. When abroad, decline an ATM’s offer to convert the withdrawal into U.S. dollars if you want your card network to handle the currency conversion; also review the transaction before accepting it.
Important distinction: Schwab Bank deposits are FDIC-insured within applicable limits. Schwab brokerage investments are not FDIC-insured deposits. Brokerage securities have a different protection framework, including SIPC protection subject to its rules, and investment values can fall.
Best fit: Frequent international travelers and Schwab brokerage customers.

5. Happen Bank: best rewards checking and conditional high-yield savings
Brand update: LendingClub Bank officially launched the Happen Bank brand on June 22, 2026. Older comparison articles may still call the institution LendingClub Bank or LendingClub. Check that the current account agreement, disclosures and FDIC information match the Happen branding before opening an account.
Why it stands out: LevelUp Savings pays 4.00% APY when the account receives at least $250 in qualifying deposits during the evaluation period. The standard rate was 3.00% on Happen’s official rate page dated July 24, 2026. LevelUp Checking pays 1.00% APY on balances of $2,500 or more and offers 1% cash back on qualifying debit purchases at gas stations, grocery stores and pharmacies. Customers with a Happen personal loan can earn 2% cash back on qualifying on-time loan payments made from the account. Happen also advertises unlimited ATM-fee rebates.
Important limitation: The 4.00% savings APY is conditional, and debit-card cash back is limited to eligible categories. The loan-payment reward applies only to customers with a Happen personal loan. Rewards are not automatically equivalent to cash interest, and the account terms control.
Best fit: Someone who can meet the monthly deposit requirement and will use the qualifying debit categories.
Skip it if: You want a simple unconditional rate or prefer an established brand with a long history under its current name.

Why it stands out: Marcus Online Savings has no monthly fee and no minimum deposit. Its official page displayed 3.40% APY as of July 28, 2026. Marcus CDs require $500 to open, offer fixed rates for the selected term and include a 10-day CD rate guarantee. Marcus also offers no-penalty CDs, with withdrawals permitted beginning seven days after funding under the stated terms.
The no-penalty feature is useful for money that may be needed before a CD matures, but it generally requires withdrawing the full balance rather than making partial withdrawals. Ordinary CDs can impose early-withdrawal penalties. Marcus ranked highest in the savings segment of J.D. Power’s 2026 direct-banking study.
Important limitation: Marcus does not offer a conventional checking account. It is best used as a savings and CD specialist alongside a separate checking account, rather than as a complete primary bank.
Best fit: Emergency funds, cash reserves and CD ladders.
Skip it if: You want one provider for checking, debit-card purchases, bill pay and savings.

7. Axos Bank: best for domestic ATM-fee reimbursement
Why it stands out: Eligible Axos checking products provide unlimited domestic ATM-fee reimbursements, and current checking products advertise access to approximately 95,000-plus ATMs nationwide. Axos Checking advertises up to 1.00% APY. Axos ONE advertises up to 0.51% APY on checking and 4.21% APY on savings, based on the official page and APYs accurate July 21, 2026.
Read the tiers: The word up to matters. Axos ONE and other checking products may impose direct-deposit, balance or product requirements. Confirm the specific account’s APY table, not just the headline on a comparison page. Unlimited ATM reimbursement generally refers to eligible domestic ATM fees; it should not be read as unlimited global reimbursement or reimbursement of every foreign-exchange charge.
Insurance caveat: Deposits held under Axos brands are combined under the same FDIC certificate for insurance purposes. Multiple Axos product names do not automatically create separate $250,000 limits.
Best fit: Someone who frequently uses ATMs in the United States and can navigate account-specific rate requirements.
Skip it if: You want a simple, unconditional savings rate or need international ATM rebates.
See Axos checking products, review the FAQs and read the deposit-program disclosure.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. American Express National Bank: best for customer experience and rewards checking
Why it stands out: American Express ranked second for checking satisfaction in J.D. Power’s 2026 direct-banking study. Rewards Checking pays 1.00% APY under the current account terms, and eligible debit-card purchases earn one Membership Rewards point for every $2 spent. The High Yield Savings Account displayed 3.10% APY as of May 22, 2026, with no monthly fee, no minimum deposit and daily compounding. American Express also provides 24/7 customer support.
Important limitation: Savings is not designed for ATM-based everyday access. ATM availability and third-party fees depend on the applicable MoneyPass and Allpoint terms. Membership Rewards points have different values depending on how they are redeemed, so one point per $2 should not automatically be described as 0.5% cash back. Promotional checking bonuses may require direct deposit and have expiration dates.
Best fit: Someone who values service and already understands the value of Membership Rewards.
Skip it if: You deposit cash regularly, need branches or want a savings account with routine ATM access.

9. Bask Bank: best interest-bearing checking/savings combination
Why it stands out: Bask Interest Checking pays 1.00% APY on its current product page and advertises no minimum balance requirement or monthly account fee. Bask also offers Interest Savings, Mileage Savings and CDs. Its 2026 rate sheet displayed 3.75% APY for Interest Savings and 4.00% APY for a nine-month CD.
Bask is an online banking division of Texas Capital Bank, not a separately chartered retail bank with its own additional FDIC limit. Deposits at Bask and Texas Capital Bank are added together when determining applicable FDIC coverage. Its Mileage Savings account earns American Airlines AAdvantage miles instead of ordinary interest, so compare the value and usefulness of those miles separately. CD early-withdrawal penalties may apply.
Best fit: Someone who wants interest-bearing checking and savings from one online banking brand and does not also hold large Texas Capital Bank deposits.
Skip it if: You need branches, frequent cash deposits or a separate insurance limit from Texas Capital Bank.
Review Bask’s FAQ, see Interest Checking and read the rate and fee schedule.
10. Varo Bank: best for mobile-first banking and cash deposits
Why it stands out: Varo is a nationally chartered, FDIC-insured bank rather than merely a fintech app placing deposits at a partner bank. Its bank account advertises no monthly, maintenance, minimum-balance or overdraft fees. Customers have access to more than 40,000 fee-free in-network ATMs, and Varo advertises free cash deposits at more than 7,000 participating CVS locations, subject to its terms.
Varo’s savings page displayed 1.00% APY on every dollar, with no minimum deposit, savings limit or monthly fee. The page also states that customers must have at least $1,000 in monthly direct deposits and maintain positive balances to continue qualifying under the stated terms. Confirm the current qualification rules because Varo’s rates and tiers can change.
Important limitation: Out-of-network ATM use and some cash-deposit transactions can carry fees. Varo is mobile-first and may not suit customers who need checks, branches, complex business banking or extensive wire-transfer services.
Best fit: A mobile-first customer who wants convenient retail cash deposits and a national bank charter.
Skip it if: You need a traditional branch relationship or sophisticated banking services.

Which online bank is best for your situation?
Best first primary bank: Ally or Capital One 360
Choose Ally for a branchless relationship with unusually broad products and strong savings organization. Choose Capital One 360 if cash deposits, branches or Cafés matter. Capital One is the safer practical choice for someone who wants online convenience without giving up all in-person access.
Best emergency-fund account: Ally or Marcus
Ally is better if you want savings buckets, recurring transfers and checking under the same provider. Marcus is better if the money is primarily a savings reserve and you do not need checking. Compare the dated APYs immediately before opening rather than assuming either bank will always pay more.
Best high-yield savings-only account: Marcus, Happen or a specialist bank
Marcus offers a simple no-minimum savings account. Happen can pay more when its $250 qualifying-deposit requirement is realistic. Savings specialists such as Bread Savings, Synchrony, Bask, UFB Direct, Vio Bank and Live Oak Bank may offer a higher rate on a particular day, but they may not provide the checking, cash access or support features needed for a primary relationship.
Best for frequent international travelers: Charles Schwab
Schwab is the clearest choice when the goal is avoiding eligible ATM fees abroad and avoiding foreign-transaction fees on qualifying debit-card use. Confirm the exclusions, and keep a backup card because no bank eliminates the risk of card declines, fraud reviews or network outages.
Best for cash-heavy workers: Capital One 360 or Varo
Capital One offers eligible ATM and retail cash-deposit options plus branches and Cafés. Varo offers participating CVS cash deposits and a large in-network ATM network. Confirm deposit limits, fees and funds-availability holds before relying on either for a paycheck paid in cash.
Best for direct-deposit customers: SoFi
SoFi makes the most sense when you can route payroll or reliably make $5,000 in qualifying deposits every 31 days. If you cannot, compare its fallback APY with no-requirement accounts instead of using the headline rate.
Best for people who dislike ATM fees: Axos or Schwab
Axos is stronger for eligible domestic ATM-fee reimbursement. Schwab is stronger for eligible worldwide ATM-fee rebates. Neither description means every ATM-related or foreign-exchange charge is reimbursed.

Marcus combines a $500 CD minimum, fixed-term CDs, a 10-day rate guarantee and a no-penalty option. Build a CD ladder only with money that can remain unavailable for the selected terms, and compare early-withdrawal rules.
Best for investors: Charles Schwab
Schwab is convenient when checking and a brokerage account belong in the same ecosystem. Do not confuse a brokerage sweep, money-market mutual fund or investment account with an FDIC-insured bank deposit.
Best for people who need branches: Capital One 360 or a local bank
Capital One offers more physical access than the other major picks, but its Cafés may not provide every branch service. If you regularly need notarization, cashier’s checks, large cash deposits or face-to-face problem resolution, compare a local bank or credit union rather than forcing an online-only account to fit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is an online bank?
An online bank is an FDIC-insured bank that primarily serves customers through a website or mobile app instead of a traditional branch network. Without the cost of a broad branch system, online banks often compete with lower fees and higher deposit rates. The trade-off is less convenient access to cash, cashier’s checks, notarization, safe-deposit services and in-person problem resolution.
The label is often used loosely. These categories are different:
- Branchless online bank: An actual bank with its own charter and deposit accounts, such as Ally, SoFi Bank, Axos Bank, Marcus/Goldman Sachs Bank USA or Varo Bank.
- Traditional bank with online products: A bank such as Capital One that offers substantial digital products while retaining branches, Cafés or other physical locations.
- Neobank: A financial app or brand that may not have a bank charter and may rely on one or more partner banks for deposits and infrastructure.
- Fintech payment app: An app focused on payments, transfers or a wallet. The app itself may not be a bank or hold insured deposits.
- Online credit union: A member-owned credit union that operates digitally. Alliant, for example, is a credit union, not a bank, and belongs in an alternatives comparison.
- Brokerage cash-management account: A brokerage product that may use bank sweeps or money-market funds. Its protections and access are not identical to a bank checking account.
Are online banks safe?
An online bank can be safe, but the relevant question is not whether its app looks established. Check four things:
- Which legal bank actually holds the money?
- Is that bank FDIC-insured?
- Is the balance within the applicable insurance limit?
- Do other brands or accounts use the same insured bank?
The standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. Checking, savings, money-market deposit accounts and CDs at the same bank are generally combined when they belong to the same depositor and ownership category. The limit is not $250,000 per app, product name or account nickname. See the FDIC deposit-insurance FAQs and FDIC ownership categories.
FDIC insurance protects covered deposits if an insured bank fails. It does not insure stocks, bonds, mutual funds, crypto assets, annuities, life insurance, brokerage investments or losses caused by fraud or theft. It also does not guarantee that an account will never be frozen, delayed, misdirected or closed.

Some fintechs and deposit-placement programs advertise pass-through insurance. For that structure to work, the funds must actually be deposited at an FDIC-insured bank, records must identify each customer and the amount owned, and the arrangement must satisfy FDIC rules and ownership requirements. FDIC insurance protects against failure of the insured bank; it does not necessarily protect against every insolvency or operational problem at the nonbank app. The FDIC guidance on third-party banking apps explains the distinction.
How to verify a bank
- Look for the FDIC digital sign on the bank’s website or app.
- Identify the legal bank name in the account agreement, deposit agreement and disclosures.
- Search that bank in the FDIC BankFind tool.
- Ask whether another brand or account uses the same FDIC certificate.
- For a large balance, use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator and spread deposits by legal bank and ownership category when appropriate.
Choose the right account type
| Goal | Usually appropriate | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Daily spending and bills | Checking | ATM access, bill pay, debit controls, Zelle availability, mobile deposit and support |
| Emergency fund | High-yield savings | Variable APY, transfer times, withdrawal limits and access during an emergency |
| Cash access with interest | Money-market deposit account | Whether checks or a debit card are available and whether minimums apply |
| Guaranteed return | CD | Term, minimum deposit, early-withdrawal penalty and renewal policy |
| Travel | Checking with global ATM rebates and no foreign-transaction fees | Whether rebates are worldwide, whether dynamic currency conversion is excluded and whether the card has a backup option |
| Large cash balance | FDIC-insured bank or documented deposit-placement program | Aggregate balances by legal bank and ownership category; do not rely on brand names |
Compare the real costs, not just the advertised APY
Before opening an account, look for:
- Monthly maintenance or account fees.
- Overdraft fees, overdraft coverage and declined-transaction policies.
- Out-of-network ATM fees and reimbursement caps.
- Cash-deposit fees and retail-location limits.
- Incoming and outgoing wire fees.
- Stop-payment, check-order and expedited debit-card fees.
- Early CD withdrawal penalties.
- Foreign-exchange and dynamic-currency-conversion charges.
- Subscription fees that unlock a higher APY or other benefits.
Also ask whether the top APY requires direct deposit, a minimum monthly deposit, a minimum balance, a balance cap, opening checking and savings together, a paid membership or a temporary promotional period. A higher advertised rate is useful only if you can meet the conditions without changing your behavior in an inconvenient or costly way.
Cash access and transfer speed
Cash access is one of the biggest differences between online banks. Before switching, verify:
- Whether cash deposits are accepted at all.
- The exact ATM network or retail partners.
- Deposit and withdrawal limits.
- Whether a fee applies to each cash deposit.
- Whether a deposit posts immediately or can be held.
- Whether savings has its own ATM card or must be transferred to checking first.
- Daily debit-card and ATM withdrawal limits.
Money movement is not always instant. ACH transfers can take multiple business days, and a newly linked external account may require verification or be subject to holds. Mobile check deposits can have availability delays. Early direct deposit depends on when the employer or government payer sends payment information and is not guaranteed for every paycheck. Wire transfers may be faster but can cost more. Zelle availability and sending limits vary by institution.

Do not close an old bank immediately. Keep enough money there for pending checks, ACH debits, subscriptions and bills until the new account has successfully handled at least one complete billing cycle.
How to switch banks safely
- Verify the legal bank. Use the account agreement and FDIC BankFind, not only the app’s brand name.
- Read the current disclosures. Check the fee schedule, APY qualifications, funds-availability policy, ATM rules and account-closure terms.
- Open the new account and make a small test deposit. Confirm that the account and routing numbers work before moving an emergency fund.
- Secure the account. Enable two-factor authentication, biometric login, transaction alerts and card controls.
- Link the old bank. Complete any microdeposit or identity-verification process.
- Move a small amount first. Confirm the transfer arrives and is available for withdrawal.
- Redirect income. Change payroll, government benefits and other recurring deposits.
- Move recurring payments. Update utilities, rent, loans, subscriptions, taxes and person-to-person payment services.
- Keep the old account open. Wait through at least one full billing cycle and confirm that pending transactions have cleared.
- Save records. Download statements, tax forms, check images and confirmation numbers before closing the old account.
Keep an alternate payment method and a secondary account during the transition. An account can be temporarily restricted because of identity verification, suspected fraud or unusual activity. FDIC insurance does not prevent those holds or resolve an account-takeover dispute.
Alternatives to the top online banks
Credit unions
Credit unions can offer competitive rates and low fees, but they are member-owned financial cooperatives rather than banks. Alliant Credit Union is a prominent online-oriented example and should be compared separately. Credit-union deposit insurance generally comes through the National Credit Union Administration rather than the FDIC, so confirm the institution’s insurance and membership eligibility.
Brokerage cash management
Fidelity and E*TRADE may provide attractive cash-management features, but they are not identical to ordinary bank checking. A brokerage may use an FDIC-insured bank sweep, a money-market mutual fund or another arrangement. FDIC insurance applies only to qualifying bank deposits, while SIPC protection applies to eligible brokerage assets under its own rules. Neither protection eliminates investment risk or guarantees immediate access during every operational problem.

Chime, OnePay, Cash App, Current and similar services may be useful, but do not call the app itself a bank unless the legal entity is an FDIC-insured bank. Identify the partner bank, understand how pass-through insurance is documented and know where to seek help if the app—not the bank—has a support or access problem.
Savings and CD specialists
Bread Savings, Synchrony, Bask, UFB Direct, Vio Bank and Live Oak Bank may beat the broader picks on a particular day. They can be good choices when the goal is maximizing savings or CD yield, but compare transfer speed, joint-account availability, cash access, insurance aggregation and customer service before using one as a primary bank.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are online banks safe?
An online bank can be safe when the actual legal institution is FDIC-insured and your deposits remain within applicable coverage limits. Safety does not mean immunity from fraud holds, outages, identity checks or account closure. Verify the bank in the FDIC BankFind tool and read the account agreement.
Is FDIC insurance automatic for every banking app?
No. A bank’s deposits may be directly insured, while a fintech app may rely on pass-through insurance through a partner bank. Funds must actually reach an FDIC-insured bank and customer ownership records must satisfy FDIC requirements. Confirm the legal bank and coverage arrangement.
Which online bank has the highest APY?
The answer changes frequently and depends on requirements, balance caps, promotions and dates. In this comparison, Happen advertised 4.00% APY on LevelUp Savings as of July 24, 2026 when customers made at least $250 in qualifying deposits. Marcus displayed 3.40% APY on savings as of July 28, 2026 without a savings minimum. Compare the rate you can actually earn, not only the maximum advertised rate.
Can I deposit cash into an online bank?
Some can accept cash, but the method and cost vary. Capital One offers eligible ATM and participating Add Cash in Store deposits, Varo advertises free deposits at participating CVS locations, and other banks may not accept cash directly. Check deposit limits, fees and funds-availability holds before opening an account.
Can I use Zelle with an online bank?
Some online banks support Zelle, while others offer a different person-to-person transfer service. Availability, sending limits and dispute procedures vary, so confirm the current feature in the bank’s app or account disclosures rather than assuming it is included.
Can I get a cashier’s check from an online bank?
Many online banks can mail an official or cashier’s check, but delivery times, fees and ordering procedures differ. If you need same-day checks, notarization or other in-person services, a local bank, credit union or Capital One location may be more practical.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I keep a local bank account if I switch online?
Often, yes. A local bank or credit union can serve as a backup for cash deposits, cashier’s checks, notarization and urgent in-person help. Keep only the amount needed for those functions and compare any fees.
Are online savings accounts taxable?
Interest from a taxable savings account is generally taxable income, even if you leave the money in the account. Banks generally report qualifying interest on Form 1099-INT. Tax treatment can differ for retirement accounts and other specialized products; consult a tax professional for personal advice.
Can I have accounts at more than one online bank?
Yes. Multiple banks can improve access, separate spending from emergency savings or help manage FDIC limits. Track the actual legal institutions because accounts at different brands may still share one FDIC-insured bank.
What happens if an online bank freezes or closes my account?
A freeze may result from identity verification, suspected fraud, legal requirements or unusual activity. Contact the bank through its official phone number or secure message, retain statements and confirmation numbers, and maintain a backup account. FDIC insurance protects covered deposits if an insured bank fails; it does not prevent or immediately resolve an account restriction.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Are online banks good for joint accounts?
Many offer joint checking or savings, but ownership rules, permissions, beneficiary designations and account-opening procedures differ. Confirm that both owners can access the account and understand how joint ownership affects FDIC insurance.
Is a fintech app the same as a bank?
No. A fintech app may provide the interface while a separate partner bank holds deposits. The app’s brand name does not itself prove that funds are FDIC-insured. Identify the partner bank and understand the pass-through insurance documentation.
The Bottom Line
For most people, start with Ally. Choose Capital One 360 instead if branches or cash deposits matter, SoFi if you can meet its qualifying-deposit rules, Schwab if international ATM access is the priority, Marcus if you mainly want savings and CDs, and Axos if domestic ATM-fee reimbursement is more valuable than simplicity.
Before transferring your money, verify the legal insured bank, compare the fallback APY, test a small transfer, confirm cash and ATM access, and keep your existing account open until every recurring payment has moved successfully. The best online bank is the one whose rate, access and support fit the way you actually use money.
