ZipBooks offers a free Starter plan for basic invoicing and bookkeeping, while its paid plans add recurring billing, time tracking, more bank connections, reconciliation and team features. The main decision is whether Starter’s limits fit your workflow—or whether the capabilities in Smarter or Sophisticated justify their listed monthly prices. Plan details and prices below are vendor-published and can change; confirm them with ZipBooks before signing up.

What is ZipBooks?

ZipBooks is cloud-based accounting and invoicing software aimed at small businesses. The company describes features for billing, bookkeeping, expenses, transaction categorization, reporting, bank connections, time tracking, project organization, team permissions and mobile access. It also says users can create invoices and estimates, take payments through Square or PayPal, manage vendors and customers, track receipts and expenses, and generate reports. These are vendor-described capabilities, and which ones are available depends on the plan. See ZipBooks for the company’s product information.

This review is based on published plan descriptions, not hands-on testing. It can help you compare the advertised feature tiers, but it cannot establish how easy the software is to use in practice.

ZipBooks plans and pricing

ZipBooks’ pricing page lists Starter as free, Smarter at $15, and Sophisticated at $35. The page content available for these figures does not specify a publication year, billing cadence beyond the displayed monthly prices, or regional and tax treatment. Confirm the current price and terms on the ZipBooks pricing page.

Smarter $15 per month, as listed by ZipBooks Starter features plus recurring invoices with auto-bill, automated reminders, saved line items, account notifications and time tracking. Multiple bank connections and up to five team members, according to ZipBooks.
Sophisticated $35 per month, as listed by ZipBooks Smarter features plus smart tagging by location, project or custom label; reconciliation; book locking; secure document sharing; and enhanced reporting. ZipBooks also presents a separate Services offering starting at $125. Its free-trial page describes a ZipBooks Scholar preparing monthly reports and tax-savings analysis. This is a bookkeeping or service offer distinct from the software plans above; the returned page content does not establish its billing cadence or full scope. See the ZipBooks free-trial page for details.

What do you get with each plan?

Starter: free invoicing and basic reports

Starter is the clearest fit for a very small operation that mainly needs to issue invoices, manage customer and vendor records, accept digital payments through Square or PayPal, and access basic reports. Its advertised unlimited invoice and contact counts avoid per-invoice or customer caps in the plan description. The trade-off is a single bank connection and less reporting depth than the paid tiers; TechRadar’s February 12, 2026 review also says Starter is limited to one user.

Starter does not list recurring auto-billing or time tracking. If you need to track billable hours within the software or automate repeating invoices, those capabilities begin with Smarter.

Smarter: recurring billing, time tracking and a small team

Smarter is the step up for businesses that invoice on a schedule, need reminders, save commonly used line items, connect more than one bank account, or track time. ZipBooks lists team access for up to five members, making this the relevant tier to examine if more than one person needs access but unlimited seats are unnecessary.

Sophisticated: reconciliation, tagging and expanded collaboration

Sophisticated adds the more advanced bookkeeping and organization features in the advertised lineup: reconciliation, book locking, secure document sharing, enhanced reporting, and tags for locations, projects or custom labels. ZipBooks lists unlimited users on this plan. Businesses that only need invoicing and basic reports may not benefit from these additions; they matter more when the business needs stronger transaction organization, review controls or shared access.

Accountant: a separate firm-oriented tier

The Accountant plan is positioned for firms serving multiple bookkeeping or accounting clients, rather than as a straightforward upgrade for one business. Its listed tools include multi-client workflows, bulk transaction editing, financial-package exports and migration features. The pricing content reviewed does not show a price, so firms should request current terms directly rather than infer a cost from the other tiers.

ZipBooks pros and cons

Potential advantages

  • Free entry point: Starter is advertised at no cost and includes unlimited invoices and customers and vendors.
  • Paid tiers add distinct workflows: Smarter introduces recurring billing and time tracking; Sophisticated adds reconciliation, smart tagging and expanded reporting and collaboration.
  • A firm-focused option exists: The Accountant plan describes features for managing multiple bookkeeping clients, though its price is not displayed in the pricing material reviewed.

Limitations to weigh

  • Starter is comparatively basic: Its plan description includes basic reports and one bank connection. TechRadar reports a one-user limit, while the official pricing content reviewed does not clearly confirm that limit.
  • Useful automation and time tools require a paid tier: Recurring auto-billing, automated reminders and time tracking are listed under Smarter, not Starter.
  • Advanced bookkeeping features are reserved for Sophisticated: Smart tagging, reconciliation, book locking and enhanced reports are listed at the $35 monthly price.
  • Some costs and terms are unclear in the published material: Accountant pricing is not shown in the returned pricing content, and the separate Services offer does not establish its billing cadence there.

How ZipBooks compares with QuickBooks Online and FreshBooks

ZipBooks’ own comparison page displays monthly prices of $35 for ZipBooks Sophisticated, $70 for QuickBooks Online Plus and $50 for FreshBooks Premium. These are figures shown by ZipBooks, not an independent price audit; they may not reflect current promotions, billing cycles, regional prices, taxes or plan changes. Check each provider’s current offer before comparing costs.

ZipBooks Sophisticated $35 Vendor-published comparison figure; confirm current price and plan terms with ZipBooks.
QuickBooks Online Plus $70 Vendor-published comparison figure; confirm current price and plan terms with QuickBooks.
FreshBooks Premium $50 Vendor-published comparison figure; confirm current price and plan terms with FreshBooks.

Headline prices alone do not show whether a plan meets your needs. Compare user and bank-connection limits, recurring billing, time tracking, reconciliation, reporting depth, and team or document collaboration. ZipBooks’ comparison page presents its own feature set favorably, so treat it as the vendor’s stated comparison rather than an independent verdict. The company’s figures and feature claims appear on its comparison page.

Are ZipBooks’ marketing claims independently verified?

ZipBooks publishes claims that its software can save 15% of time on mundane bookkeeping tasks and that customers are 15.8% more likely to repurchase when an invoice includes a logo. The page content reviewed does not state the year or methodology behind either statistic. They are vendor claims, not independently verified results, and should not be used as guaranteed outcomes for your business. The figures appear on the ZipBooks features page.

Who should consider ZipBooks?

  • Consider Starter if you need basic invoicing, customer and vendor records, payment options, and simple reporting, and its bank-connection and user limits suit your business.
  • Consider Smarter if recurring invoices, reminders, time tracking, multiple bank connections or access for a small team would replace manual work.
  • Consider Sophisticated if you need reconciliation, smart tags, book locking, secure document sharing, enhanced reports or unlimited users.
  • Ask about Accountant if you run a bookkeeping or accounting firm and need multi-client workflows; the reviewed pricing material does not state its price.

Before choosing a paid plan, identify which features you will actually use and verify the current plan limits and billing terms. If the decision depends on usability, test the product yourself rather than relying on feature descriptions alone.
