The appointment was conditional on State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Fit and Proper Test clearance and compliance with applicable requirements. A later report said SBP granted the clearance, and Askari Bank records Ijaz joining its board on February 17, 2025.
What Askari Bank announced on January 24, 2025
The board’s decision was for a three-year term, but the initial notice described the appointment as conditional—not as an unconditional start in office. It required Ijaz to receive SBP Fit and Proper Test (FPT) clearance and to meet applicable laws, rules and regulations. Askari Bank’s filing to the Pakistan Stock Exchange was signed by Company Secretary Syed Ali Safdar Naqvi.
The same notice said Saleem Anwar would continue as Acting President & CEO until Ijaz joined. This distinguishes the board’s decision date from the subsequent transition into the role.
Was the appointment cleared by the State Bank?
Yes. In February 2025, Business Recorder reported that SBP had granted the FPT clearance. Askari Bank’s 2024 chairman’s review, published with its financial information, also stated that Ijaz had been appointed President & CEO: Askari Bank financial information.

Askari Bank’s corporate profile records Ijaz joining the board on February 17, 2025. A later, dated confirmation appears in the bank’s March 2026 notice of a corporate briefing session, which identifies him as President & CEO. The Pakistan Stock Exchange company profile and Askari Bank’s team page also list him in the leadership role: PSX company profile and Askari Bank team page.
Zia Ijaz’s banking experience
Askari Bank’s corporate profile describes Ijaz as having more than three decades of banking experience. His career includes senior leadership at UBL and Allied Bank (ABL), Financial Controller work at Riyad Bank in Saudi Arabia, and an earlier CFO role at Askari Bank.
