Neither wallet makes MetaMask look outdated in any universal sense. The clearest difference is recovery. ZenGo signs transactions with multi-party computation (MPC) and does not rely on a conventional seed phrase, so it feels newer if you are used to writing words down on paper. Plus Wallet, which app stores now list as Cold Wallet, follows a closer version of the MetaMask pattern: a recovery phrase, multi-chain management and dApp connections. If “newer” means a different recovery model, ZenGo is the more distinct option. If it means familiar seed-phrase recovery with broad dApp access, Plus Wallet is the closer match. Which app actually suits you depends on how you recover access, which networks and dApps you use, what devices you need, and what each transaction costs.
Why “outdated” is the wrong test
A wallet does not become outdated because its interface is newer or its marketing uses fresher language. What matters for a personal-finance decision is whether the wallet can restore your access, reach the networks where your assets live, connect to the apps you rely on, and show you the real cost before you confirm. Those four points are where ZenGo and Plus Wallet differ, and where MetaMask’s own position is easier to judge. MetaMask publishes a comparison page that uses custody, networks, device and platform support, and hardware-wallet pairing as its dimensions. Because MetaMask wrote that page, treat it as a checklist of questions rather than an independent verdict.
Recovery: how you get back into the wallet
Recovery is the most important difference and the one most often misunderstood. Each design shifts the risk to a different place.
ZenGo: MPC signing and factor-based recovery
ZenGo’s security page describes signing without a conventional seed phrase. Instead, it describes a recovery process that uses factors such as email, biometric authentication and a stored recovery file. These are ZenGo’s own descriptions of its design, not results from an independent audit. The practical consequence is that your ability to restore access depends on the factors you set up and can still reach. Before you move significant funds, confirm on ZenGo’s security page which factors are required to recover access, and keep those factors current, including the email account and the device or file you rely on.

Plus Wallet / Cold Wallet: recovery phrase
Plus Wallet’s dApp guide describes creating a new wallet or importing an existing one using a recovery phrase. That makes the model familiar to anyone who already uses a seed-phrase wallet: whoever holds the phrase can restore the wallet, and losing it removes that route. Store the phrase offline and treat it as the master key. The same rule applies to MetaMask’s seed-phrase model, so the switch from MetaMask to Plus Wallet on recovery is about process and location of the phrase, not a change in the underlying risk.

Networks and assets: check the exact pair
Network coverage is the point where a wallet either fits your holdings or does not. ZenGo’s support article dated June 18, 2025 lists Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Dogecoin, Solana and Polygon. The same article states that token and NFT support differs by network, so a network being listed does not mean every asset on it is supported. Check the current article at ZenGo’s supported assets page before relying on the list, because a June 2025 snapshot can be out of date by the time you read this.

Plus Wallet’s guide describes multi-chain switching, but the sources cited here do not give a current chain list. Confirm the networks inside the live app.
The same rule applies to both wallets and to MetaMask: a token is only the asset you think it is on the network where it lives. Sending an ERC-20 style token to an address on the wrong network can leave it unrecoverable, and the destination address format does not protect you from that mistake. Match the asset, the network and the address before you send.

dApp access: connection method and network
Plus Wallet’s guide describes two routes for connecting to decentralized applications: a native connection, or WalletConnect. The guide also says you should choose the network that matches the dApp. Those two steps cover most failures, which usually come from a wrong network rather than a missing feature.
ZenGo advertises Web3 features, but the cited pages do not give a dApp compatibility list. Whether a particular dApp works depends on the dApp, the network it uses, and the wallet’s implementation. Do not assume that a dApp that works with MetaMask will work with either alternative. Test with a small amount first, and confirm the network in the wallet before you approve any connection request.

Fees and irreversible transfers
ZenGo’s help article “What is Zengo, and why is it secure?” states that purchases and trades may carry fees and may be priced differently from the spot price, and that transfers carry network fees. It also warns that crypto transactions cannot be reversed. The author, Ouriel Ohayon, wrote in that article: “When you make a crypto transfer, network fees apply.” The article was published December 12, 2023, so confirm the current fee terms in the app or on the ZenGo help article before you transact.
No current fee schedule for Plus Wallet / Cold Wallet appears in the materials cited here, so a direct fee comparison is not possible. The practical approach is the same for both: read the quote, the spread or conversion rate, the provider fee and the network fee on the confirmation screen, then decide. A transaction is final once it is broadcast, so the confirmation screen is the last point where you can catch an error.
Security claims: what is and is not established
ZenGo markets MPC and seedless recovery as its security design, and its pages make categorical claims such as “never hacked.” Treat those as ZenGo’s own statements. They are not independent audits or measurements, and the sources cited here do not provide an independent security statistic for either wallet or for MetaMask.
Plus Wallet’s marketing uses broad security language. Those claims are also provider statements. Independent audit scope and dates, if they exist, should be checked directly in each provider’s documentation. Neither wallet removes your own exposure to phishing, malicious approvals or a compromised device.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- Recovery: If you want to avoid a seed phrase and can keep your email, biometric factors and recovery file secure, check ZenGo’s recovery requirements. If you prefer a phrase you control, Plus Wallet / Cold Wallet is closer to MetaMask.
- Networks: List every network and asset you hold, then match each one against the live app. A wallet that lacks one network is a dealbreaker for that holding, even if the rest of the app is strong.
- dApps: Make a list of the dApps you use and test one small connection on each network before you move larger balances.
- Costs: Compare the live quote and network fee for the same transfer in each wallet, since published fee terms may change.
- Platform: Confirm your operating system and device are supported in the current store listing, not in an older article.
