There is no single Zcash wallet that is best for everyone. Choose by checking which shielded address types it supports, who controls the spending keys, how recovery works, what privacy defaults it uses, and what security tasks you must manage yourself. Zcash’s official documentation says Electric Coin Company (ECC) does not endorse specific third-party wallets, apart from the zcashd full-node wallet.
What matters when comparing Zcash wallets
A wallet manages the keys that let you access and spend ZEC. A familiar name or a long feature list does not establish that a wallet supports the address types you need or that its recovery method suits you. Compare the wallet’s current documentation against these questions before depositing funds.

| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Shielded and transparent support | Can the wallet receive, hold, and spend through the shielded pools and address types you need, including Orchard or Unified Addresses if relevant? Can it also handle transparent transfers you expect to use? |
| Key custody and recovery | Do you control the spending keys? What exact seed phrase, key, or wallet-file backup restores access? Does the backup process cover newly generated addresses? |
| Security model | Is it a connected mobile or desktop app, a full node, or a wallet paired with hardware? What happens if you lose the device, account, or backup? What security responsibilities fall to you? |
| Privacy behavior | Does the wallet make address types clear and make shielded transactions practical? What information could your actions expose, including transaction details or viewing keys? |
| Everyday operation | Check supported operating systems, synchronization behavior, fees, recovery steps, and provider support in the wallet’s own current documentation. The official ecosystem pages discussed here do not provide a full side-by-side operational comparison. |
How address types affect privacy
Transparent Zcash addresses and transaction values are recorded publicly. Shielded-to-shielded transactions conceal addresses and amounts from public observers, but that protection depends on using a wallet that supports the relevant shielded address and pool types. Do not assume two wallets bearing the same currency label have identical shielded support.
Recommended Free Tools
Zcash’s privacy guidance also emphasizes user behavior: keep more ZEC in shielded addresses than a single transaction requires, limit metadata that could link activity, and understand the implications before sharing viewing keys. These are privacy practices; they do not replace a secure device or a reliable key backup.

What the named wallet options say they support
The official Zcash ecosystem materials identify several options, but these descriptions are not independent security tests or a complete feature audit. Support and features can change, so verify current details with each provider before moving substantial funds.
Zodl (formerly Zashi)
The official ecosystem page describes Zodl as developed by Zcash Open Development Lab and lists built-in swaps, CrossPay, Flexa support, and Keystone hardware-wallet integration. Check the current app documentation for availability, the supported hardware model, shielded-pool support, and the setup and recovery flow before relying on an integration.
Zingo
Zingo’s official ecosystem page says it supports Orchard and Unified Addresses, uses a private memo field, and is shielded by default. These are project-stated features, not independent findings about its security or suitability for every user.
zcashd
zcashd is full-node software with an embedded wallet. Its documentation gives ~/.zcash/wallet.dat as the wallet-file location for the documented setup and says to back up the file and keep its permissions private. Running a full node also means taking responsibility for the host computer and the wallet data stored on it.
Other directory-listed choices
The Zcash Community directory lists Ywallet, Cake, Edge, Unstoppable, and other wallet or exchange links. A directory listing is not a feature audit. Confirm each provider’s current shielded support, custody model, platforms, and recovery procedure directly.

Zcash’s general backup guidance says a private-key backup can help prevent loss of funds, should be stored where it is less susceptible to loss or theft, and should be refreshed when new addresses are generated. For third-party apps, follow that wallet’s own backup and restore instructions: the detailed backupwallet, export, and import commands in Zcash documentation apply to zcashd, not automatically to other wallets.
- Find the provider’s current restore instructions and confirm what information or file is required.
- Check whether the procedure accounts for new addresses created after the original backup.
- Keep recovery material private and stored to reduce the chance of loss or theft.
- For a physical backup, a metal seed phrase plate is one possible approach, not a Zcash requirement or an endorsed product.
Security responsibilities for zcashd
The zcashd documentation says wallet encryption is disabled in its implementation and recommends full-disk or home-directory encryption to protect wallet data at rest. It also warns that someone able to run code on the host, or observe relevant side channels, may pose a risk. These warnings are specific to zcashd; do not assume they describe every mobile or desktop wallet. For another app, read its own security and threat-model documentation.
What’s the best Zcash wallet?
The best fit is the wallet whose supported shielded address types, custody and recovery process, privacy behavior, and operational requirements match your needs. ECC’s official documentation does not endorse third-party wallets apart from zcashd, and the ecosystem listings do not amount to a comparative security audit. Treat provider feature descriptions as claims to verify, not as proof of security. Before transferring a meaningful balance, confirm current support and recovery instructions with the wallet provider.
