Bitcoin transactions are public by default; Zcash supports both public-style transparent transactions and shielded transactions. Bitcoin’s pseudonymous addresses can be linked to real-world identities when outside information makes the connection. Zcash’s shielded path uses zero-knowledge proofs to keep transaction data encrypted while the network verifies it, but transparent activity and transfers at the edges of shielded pools can still be observed. Neither system should be described simply as anonymous or untraceable.
What transaction information is visible?
Bitcoin: confirmed transactions are public
Bitcoin publishes confirmed transactions on a public blockchain. The ledger exposes transaction records and address relationships, so observers can follow activity associated with addresses. Bitcoin.org calls Bitcoin “probably the most transparent payment network in the world” in its privacy guidance.
Addresses are pseudonymous: an address does not, by itself, display its owner’s name. But pseudonymity is not anonymity. If an address or its activity is connected to identifying information, the public record can provide a trail for examining related transactions. Bitcoin.org also notes that protecting privacy requires care because some activity can reveal information about a user.
Zcash: visibility depends on the transaction path
Zcash supports transparent transactions, which work similarly to Bitcoin transactions, as well as shielded transactions. Its protocol documentation describes shielded addresses as using zero-knowledge proofs so transaction data can be encrypted while remaining verifiable by network nodes. This makes the path used—not just the currency name—the key to understanding what is visible.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
A Zcash transaction using transparent addresses should not be treated as shielded merely because it is on Zcash. For shielded transactions, protocol-level confidentiality applies to the transaction data covered by the shielded mechanism; it does not establish that all surrounding activity or off-chain identity information is hidden.
How do privacy and tracking compare?
| Question | Bitcoin | Zcash |
|---|---|---|
| What is visible on-chain? | Confirmed transactions are published on the public blockchain; addresses are pseudonymous. Bitcoin.org | Transparent activity is public-style; shielded paths encrypt transaction data while allowing network verification. Zcash documentation |
| What is the privacy mechanism? | Pseudonymous addresses on a public ledger. Bitcoin.org | Optional shielded paths use zero-knowledge proofs; transparent paths remain available. Zcash documentation |
| What can analytics examine? | Public transactions and address relationships; linking activity to a person requires attribution beyond simply reading an address. Chainalysis | Transparent transactions and observable flows into, out of, or between shielded pools, according to Chainalysis’s description of its capabilities. That does not establish visibility into the details of a fully shielded transaction. Chainalysis |
What can transaction tracking actually reveal?
Public records versus real-world identity
For Bitcoin, tracing public transaction records and identifying the person behind an address are related but distinct tasks. Chainalysis describes Bitcoin as pseudonymous rather than anonymous and says blockchain analysis can connect addresses to real-world entities. That supports the narrower conclusion that transactions are traceable on the public ledger; it does not mean every address is automatically identified.

Zcash’s transparent activity and shielded-pool boundaries
Chainalysis says its tools support Zcash analysis similarly to Bitcoin for non-shielded transactions and can identify and monitor transfers into, out of, and between shielded pools. These are claims about the vendor’s monitoring capabilities and observable transaction flows. They are not evidence that it can read the contents of a fully shielded transaction or break the protocol’s cryptography.

- If you are evaluating Bitcoin: assume confirmed transaction records are publicly inspectable. An address is not a name, but links between public activity and identifying information can make attribution possible.
- If you are evaluating Zcash: check whether the transaction uses transparent or shielded paths. Transparent activity remains observable; shielded transactions provide protocol-level confidentiality for the data protected by that path.
- For either currency: distinguish on-chain visibility from identity attribution. Public activity, transaction context, and links outside the blockchain can matter, so on-chain privacy alone is not a blanket anonymity guarantee.
Zcash’s protocol design also does not justify a claim that every Zcash transaction is private or that every practical source of attribution disappears. An SEC-filed issuer disclosure discusses the possibility that cryptographic privacy protections could fail; that historical filing is a risk caveat, not a current assessment of protocol status.
