Bitcoin transaction data is public by default. Zcash can also record transactions transparently, but it additionally supports shielded transactions that conceal specified details while still allowing the network to validate them. The practical difference depends on the transaction mode and, for Zcash, the wallet used.
How Bitcoin and Zcash differ at a glance
| Question | Bitcoin | Zcash |
|---|---|---|
| What is visible on-chain? | Confirmed transactions, including their inputs, outputs, amounts, and public addresses or scripts, are inspectable. | Transparent transactions expose public transaction information. Shielded transactions encrypt transaction details described by the Zcash Foundation. |
| Can transaction details be shielded? | The Bitcoin transaction model described by the cited sources publishes confirmed transactions to the blockchain. | Yes. Users can make shielded transactions, subject to wallet support and behavior. |
| How does the network validate a shielded payment? | Not applicable to a shielded mode in the comparison described here. | Zero-knowledge proofs let the network validate transactions under consensus rules without publishing the shielded transaction details. |
| How can a recipient check a payment? | A recipient can inspect the public transaction record. | Transparent payments can be checked on-chain. A shielded payment may need a sender-provided disclosure to prove selected facts. |
These differences concern transaction visibility, not automatic real-world identity. A public address is an identifier; linking it to a person requires other information or patterns of use.

What Bitcoin makes public
Inputs, outputs, and amounts
Bitcoin transactions spend earlier outputs and create new outputs. The public blockchain links these records, exposing transaction inputs and outputs, amounts, and the addresses or scripts involved. Bitcoin Core’s privacy documentation puts it plainly: “Every confirmed Bitcoin transaction is published to the blockchain where anyone can see it.” Bitcoin Core privacy documentation

That transparency can make payment verification straightforward: a recipient can inspect the transaction record. It also means that activity associated with reused addresses or keys may be easier to follow across transactions. Bitcoin’s developer documentation explains the transaction and blockchain mechanics in its transactions guide and block chain guide.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Public does not mean named
Bitcoin is better described as pseudonymous than anonymous. The chain shows identifiers and activity, not necessarily the identity of the person behind an address. A person’s identity may become linkable through address reuse, use of services, or other identifying information, but that is a separate step from simply reading the blockchain. What Zcash can conceal—and what it does not
Transparent Zcash
Zcash supports transparent transactions, whose public information is comparable in visibility to Bitcoin’s transparent ledger. Holdings and financial history associated with transparent addresses are public, according to the Zcash Foundation’s explanation of Zcash traceability.

Shielded Zcash
Shielded transactions encrypt information including addresses, amounts, and memo fields, while zero-knowledge proofs allow the network to validate transactions. The Zcash Foundation describes the role of zk-SNARKs in that validation. Shielding is a protocol capability, not a guarantee against identification through information outside the transaction record, such as a compromised device or information shared with a counterparty.

The Zcash Foundation’s comparison of shielded and transparent Zcash explains the two modes. Its educational material notes that Network Upgrade 5 introduced the Orchard shielded payment protocol in May 2022, using the Halo 2 proving system. That is a protocol milestone, not a measure of how widely shielding is used.

How to check Zcash wallet behavior
A Zcash wallet can shield by default, let users choose between transparent and shielded transactions, or only support transparent transactions. Some wallets also automatically shield funds received transparently. The Zcash Foundation’s usage guide describes these differences; the currency name alone does not tell you which features a wallet offers.
- Check supported transaction modes. Read the wallet’s feature information to confirm whether it supports shielded transactions, transparent transactions, or both.
- Check the default for incoming and outgoing funds. Confirm whether funds are shielded automatically, whether you must choose a mode, and how the wallet handles funds received transparently.
- Confirm the mode before sending. Use the wallet’s transaction details or confirmation screen to verify whether the payment will be transparent or shielded.
The sources establish that wallet behavior varies, but do not identify one universally best wallet. Zcash’s protocol specification describes transparent address formats such as P2SH and P2PKH, and recommends unified payment addresses for new applications unless compatibility requires older formats. That is protocol guidance, not an instruction to select a particular consumer wallet. Zcash Protocol Specification

How payment verification differs
Transparent payments
When a payment uses only transparent addresses, a recipient can use its transaction ID to inspect the blockchain and confirm that the transaction was mined. The public record supplies the information needed for that check.

Shielded payments and selective proof
For a shielded payment, the blockchain may not reveal enough information for someone else to reconstruct and verify the payment from the chain alone. ZIP 311 describes a way for a sender to disclose selected payment facts—for example, that the correct amount reached a recipient—without revealing other addresses or transactions. The proposal is marked Draft, so it describes a mechanism rather than establishing that every wallet provides a polished user-facing disclosure feature. ZIP 311: Payment Disclosure

So shielded does not mean impossible to prove: it means payment details are not publicly inspectable by default, while a sender may be able to share a limited proof.
Quick Recap
Which difference matters for your use?
- If you want public on-chain verifiability: Bitcoin’s transparent transaction record and transparent Zcash transactions let others inspect payment details.
- If you want transaction details concealed on-chain: Zcash offers shielded transactions, but confirm that your wallet supports them and uses the mode you intend.
- If you are judging identity exposure: Separate the visibility of transaction data from whether that data identifies a person. Public records can be linkable without displaying a real name.
- If someone needs proof of a shielded payment: Check whether the wallet supports an appropriate disclosure; the ZIP 311 design is Draft and does not establish support in every wallet.
