Bitcoin’s confirmed transactions are public; Zcash can make transaction details private when funds move through shielded transactions. Neither currency guarantees that activity cannot be linked to a person: the relevant differences are what the public ledger reveals, which transaction type a wallet uses, and what is disclosed when funds cross between shielded and transparent addresses.
How do Bitcoin and Zcash compare on the public ledger?
| Question | Bitcoin | Zcash |
|---|---|---|
| What can a public observer see? | Every confirmed transaction is published to the blockchain. Bitcoin Core documentation describes the transactions as visible to anyone. | It depends on the transaction type. Transparent activity is public; shielded transaction details are encrypted from public observers, according to Zcash’s traceability guide. |
| Does privacy depend on wallet behavior? | Bitcoin and most other cryptocurrencies allow only transparent transactions, according to Zcash’s user guide. | Wallet capabilities vary: some shield all transactions, some let users choose shielded or transparent behavior, and some allow only transparent transactions. |
| What happens at a shielded-to-transparent boundary? | Not applicable to Bitcoin’s base-layer transaction model. | ZIP 224 specifies that spending funds from the Orchard pool to a non-Orchard address reveals the transaction value. This does not mean that all shielded activity is publicly readable. |
The table describes public-chain visibility, not every possible way activity might be associated with a person. A public ledger and a person’s identity are not the same thing.
Is Bitcoin private?
Bitcoin provides pseudonymous addresses, not confidential transactions. Bitcoin Core documentation states: “Every confirmed Bitcoin transaction is published to the blockchain where anyone can see it.” The transactions are public, but the ledger does not automatically label an address with its owner’s real-world identity.
That distinction matters: privacy depends in part on whether an observer can connect an address to the person controlling it. A public transaction history can be examined without a name being published alongside it; identity linkage is a separate question.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Is Zcash traceable?
Zcash is not uniformly private or uniformly transparent. Its traceability depends on whether the relevant activity uses shielded or transparent addresses, and on how funds move between them.
Shielded transactions
Zcash’s educational guide says shielded transaction addresses, amounts, and memo fields are encrypted from public observers. The guide describes those fields as “completely private.” That statement concerns what the public blockchain exposes; it should not be read as a guarantee that every real-world detail or every route involving the funds is impossible to infer.

Transparent transactions
Transparent Zcash activity exposes financial information publicly. Zcash’s guide says transparent addresses make holdings and financial history public. Choosing Zcash alone therefore does not ensure that a transaction is shielded.
Wallet support and choices
A wallet’s capabilities determine which transaction behavior is available. Zcash’s user guide distinguishes wallets that shield all transactions, wallets that let users choose between shielded and transparent transactions, and wallets that allow only transparent transactions. The guide summarizes the contrast by saying, “Bitcoin and most other cryptocurrencies only allow transparent transactions.” Wallet support can change, so confirm the current capabilities of the wallet you intend to use rather than assuming that every Zcash wallet offers the same options.

What can be disclosed when shielded funds move?
Shielding a transaction does not make every later step invisible. ZIP 224 specifies a concrete Orchard boundary: spending funds from the Orchard pool to an address outside that pool reveals the transaction value. This is a disclosure at that transition, not evidence that the details of all Orchard activity are public.
Zcash’s protocol specification, labeled NU6.1, also defines viewing keys for Sapling and Orchard. These keys make it possible for authorized key holders to access selected wallet information. Shielding limits what public observers see; it does not mean that disclosure to an authorized holder is impossible.

Does a hardware wallet improve transaction privacy?
A hardware wallet is a way to hold and manage private keys; it is not an anonymity feature. Bitcoin.org explains that self-custody removes dependence on a custodian but makes the user responsible for securing the wallet and its backups. A hardware wallet does not hide Bitcoin transactions recorded on the public blockchain, and it is not a substitute for a Zcash wallet that supports shielded transactions.
