The pressure to delegate is real—your VA can handle stream setup, chat moderation, and thumbnail uploads while you focus on content. But YouTube’s permission system is built for multiple managers without anyone needing your password, and most people skip straight to the dangerous part.
Keep YouTube Live Running Without Sharing Channel Access
StreamNeo is a practical fit when the goal is to keep an owned or licensed prerecorded video running on YouTube without handing a VA broad channel access. Upload the video and paste your YouTube stream key; StreamNeo runs the broadcast in the cloud while your PC stays off.
For an unattended stream, StreamNeo checks stream health every 30 seconds and automatically restarts a dropped stream. That removes the need for a VA to keep a PC or encoder available just to recover a failed broadcast.
You can test the workflow with StreamNeo’s free 24-hour 720p/30fps trial, with no card required at signup. Upload a video, paste the stream key, and confirm the setup before deciding whether it fits your channel.

The safe way starts with YouTube’s OAuth system, which lets you grant specific abilities without handing over your account. OAuth tokens can be revoked instantly if a team member leaves, and every action gets logged with their name attached. That’s the foundation. Layered on top are upload-only permissions, OAuth scope restrictions that prevent your VA from changing channel settings they have no reason to touch, and for extra paranoia, IP allowlisting so the token only works from a specific network.
The OAuth Permission Model: What Actually Happens
YouTube doesn’t give you a “delegate to this person” button. Instead, it uses OAuth tokens—digital keys that you generate and hand to your VA. Each key is a password replacement, but much safer because you can:
- Revoke it instantly without changing your main password
- Restrict it to specific actions (upload videos, go live, read comments) instead of full account access
- See exactly who did what because every action logs the token ID
- Expire it automatically after 60 days of inactivity
The token is generated through Google Cloud Console. You create a project, give it a name, generate a service account, and that creates a JSON file. That file is your VA’s key. They use it to connect OBS, streaming software, or scheduling tools. The moment they’re done, you delete the file or revoke the token. No password change needed.
Step 1: Create a Google Cloud Project
The first thing you’ll see when you open Google Cloud Console is a dropdown that says “Select a project.” Click it and create a new one.

Name it something obvious like “YouTube Channel Streaming.” The organization and billing account fields can stay empty unless you’re running this through a business account. Once created, Google gives you a project ID. That’s what ties the token to your YouTube channel.

Next, you enable two APIs: YouTube Data API and Google Drive API. Search for them in the “Enable APIs and Services” section. These APIs tell Google Cloud what your token is allowed to do. Without them enabled, the token won’t work no matter what you configure downstream.
Step 2: Create a Service Account
Service accounts are the OAuth side of things. Go to “Create Credentials” and select “Service Account.” Give it a name (something like “VA-Streaming-Token”) and a description. You don’t need to grant it any roles yet—that comes later.
Once created, click into the service account and go to the “Keys” tab. Create a new JSON key. Google will download a file that contains the actual OAuth credentials. This file is what your VA uses. Treat it like a password: don’t share it in Slack, don’t commit it to GitHub, don’t email it unencrypted.
Step 3: Restrict the Token to Upload and Streaming Scopes Only
The JSON file is valid now, but it’s overpowered. It can change your channel name, delete videos, and alter monetization settings. You need to restrict it.
Open the Google Cloud Console and go to the OAuth consent screen. Add your VA’s email as a test user. This limits the token to test-mode scopes, which is fine—YouTube’s “creator” scopes (manage videos, go live, read analytics) work fine in test mode.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Then, when your VA uses the token in their streaming software (OBS, Restream, etc.), the software will request specific permissions. For example, OBS might request only “manage my videos” and “go live.” You approve those during the token creation flow. Other sensitive scopes—like changing channel settings or managing monetization—are never requested, so your VA’s token literally cannot do them.
Step 4: Use IP Allowlisting for Extra Safety
This is optional but recommended if your VA works from a consistent location. Google Cloud allows you to restrict API access by IP address.

One-click scans. No signup required.
In the Google Cloud project, go to “VPC network” and create a firewall rule. Set it to allow traffic only from the IP address where your VA streams from. If they work from home and have a static IP, or from a fixed office, this takes seconds. If they’re mobile, skip this—the OAuth revocation is your safety net.
Step 5: Monitor Access and Revoke Immediately When Done
Once your VA has the token, every upload and stream they initiate will appear in your YouTube analytics under the account that generated it (yours). Go to YouTube Studio > Settings > Account > Linked Accounts and you’ll see every OAuth app connected to your channel. Click the three dots next to your streaming integration and you can revoke it in one click.
Set a reminder for when your VA’s contract ends. On that day, revoke the token. If they lose the JSON file or leave unexpectedly, you don’t need to change your password—just revoke.

The Alternative: Channel Membership for Read-Only Access
If your VA only needs to monitor chat or check stream stats, you don’t need to give them OAuth access at all. Add them as a channel member with restricted permissions instead. Go to YouTube Studio > Settings > Permissions and choose what they can see. They can read chat, view analytics, and schedule content, but they cannot stream or upload.
For anything that requires actual streaming or uploading, though, you’ll need OAuth.
If the goal is only to keep a prerecorded YouTube broadcast running, StreamNeo separates that task from channel administration. Upload the video and paste your YouTube stream key; StreamNeo runs it in the cloud while your PC stays off, checks stream health every 30 seconds, and automatically restarts dropped streams.
If the goal is simply to keep a prerecorded YouTube broadcast running, StreamNeo separates that job from channel administration: upload the video and paste the YouTube stream key, then let StreamNeo run it in the cloud while your PC stays off. This is a cleaner choice when you want reliable unattended broadcasting instead of giving another person ongoing OAuth access.

Some creators try to delegate everything, including account recovery. That’s a mistake. Keep your recovery email and phone number in your account alone. Keep your 2FA setup (Google Authenticator or a hardware key) private. Your VA should never have access to password recovery, because that person becomes your single point of failure.

For live streams specifically, there’s a cleaner option than delegating your main channel: use a separate scheduling system. StreamNeo lets you upload a video once and set it to stream on loop from the cloud, automatically restarting if the stream drops. Your VA uploads the file once, pastes your YouTube stream key (which is safe to share because it’s not your password), and the stream runs unattended. You keep full control of the channel, there’s nothing to delegate, and if the stream dies at 3am, it restarts by itself with no intervention needed. There is a free 24-hour trial and no card required, which gives you time to see if it removes the delegation burden entirely.
Practical Limits on What to Delegate
Even with OAuth, some things should stay with you:
- Changing monetization settings: Don’t let anyone toggle your AdSense or YouTube Partner status.
- Adjusting channel details: Name, description, and profile picture should stay in your hands.
- Managing memberships or Super Chat: These touch revenue, so they’re your call.
- Deleting videos: Especially if they’re part of a long-running live channel, deletions can impact viewer retention.
Everything else—scheduling, uploading, going live, reading chat, checking analytics—is fair game to delegate.
Expiring Tokens Automatically
Google Cloud allows you to set an expiration date on OAuth tokens at creation. Some streaming software (like OBS) will prompt you to re-authenticate when the token is about to expire. Set it to 90 days. Your VA will have to re-authenticate quarterly, which gives you a natural checkpoint to decide whether they still need access.
What Happens If Your VA’s Device Gets Hacked
If their computer or phone is compromised and someone steals the JSON file, they have the same permissions your VA has. That’s why OAuth scopes matter: the token literally cannot do more than upload or go live, so even if it’s stolen, the damage is contained.
