Short answer: YouTube Premium Family has already required every member to live at the family manager’s same residential address. YouTube’s help pages also describe an electronic check-in every 30 days. The recent development is reported, more active enforcement: some members have received warnings that their Premium benefits may be paused if YouTube cannot confirm they share the manager’s household.
This is not a confirmed global cancellation of Family plans, a ban on relatives sharing in every circumstance, or proof that every account receives the same deadline. The practical risk is that a member living at another address may lose Premium access while the Google Account itself remains intact.
What YouTube’s policy actually says
YouTube’s official requirements say Family Plan members must live at the same residential address as the family manager. The plan is designed for one manager and up to five additional people using their own Google Accounts. See YouTube’s Family plan requirements and Family plan management help.
YouTube also says an electronic check-in occurs every 30 days to confirm the household requirement. That means the same-address condition is not a new eligibility rule; what appears to be changing is how actively YouTube is acting when it cannot verify it.

Other eligibility conditions
- Members must be in a country or region where the relevant paid membership is available and compatible with the manager’s account.
- A person cannot switch Google family groups more than once every 12 months.
- Google Workspace accounts cannot start or join a YouTube family plan; a regular Google Account is required.

What is reportedly changing
A September 2, 2025 Thurrott report, citing emails received by users and reporting from Android Police, said some members were warned that their Premium benefits would be paused in 14 days if YouTube determined they were not in the same household. The reported message said the account could remain in the family group but revert to ad-supported YouTube.
That report does not establish a universal 14-day grace period, a worldwide rollout, or identical treatment for every account and country. YouTube has not publicly detailed all of the signals used in its checks. Claims that enforcement definitely relies on a specific mix of IP addresses, GPS, device activity, payment data, or location history remain unconfirmed in the cited official documentation.
Who is most likely to be affected?
The test is the residential address, not the family relationship. A roommate at the manager’s address is more clearly within the stated structure than a sibling in another state.
- Friends splitting the bill from separate homes
- Siblings living in different cities
- Adult children who have moved out
- Parents, grandparents, or partners maintaining separate residences
- College students living away from the family home
- Former roommates or other people who moved out but were never removed
- People who joined while temporarily elsewhere and now maintain a separate permanent home
YouTube’s public pages do not define every unusual arrangement. A vacation or short trip should not automatically be called disqualifying, but the documentation also does not promise an exemption for long absences. Split households and students at school therefore remain judgment calls rather than guaranteed exceptions.

What happens if YouTube flags a member?
The member may receive an email or in-app notice asking for the eligibility issue to be resolved. If Premium access is paused, the affected person can lose:
- Ad-free viewing
- Background playback
- Offline downloads
- YouTube Music Premium access
Losing the paid entitlement is different from losing the Google Account. YouTube’s family-plan help says family members lose paid access when the membership ends but keep their accounts, subscriptions, playlists, recommendations, and account identity. Do not assume YouTube will erase watch history or immediately remove the person from the family group.
Is the whole plan at risk?
The available evidence points more toward a member-level eligibility problem than automatic cancellation of every Family Plan. In many cases, the manager’s subscription may continue while the member whose household status cannot be confirmed loses Premium benefits. The exact treatment can vary by account and region, and YouTube does not promise that enforcement will always be limited to one person.

- Review the family group. Remove people who clearly no longer live at the manager’s residential address.
- Check account location details. If YouTube displays a location error, review the manager’s Google Payments country or region and the family-group information. Correct information alone does not guarantee a successful check.
- Tell out-of-household members early. They may need an individual, student, or other plan before benefits are paused.
- Watch official notices. Treat emails and in-app messages from YouTube as more reliable than screenshots or social-media summaries.
- Avoid repeated family-group moves. The once-per-12-month switching limit can make an improvised workaround unavailable.
Use YouTube’s family-plan management page and requirements page for account-specific instructions.
What a warned member should do
- Read the notice and note the actual deadline shown for that account.
- Confirm that the Google Account is in the intended family group.
- Be honest about whether the person genuinely shares the manager’s residential address.
- Review country or region details if the warning appears to be a location mismatch.
- Contact YouTube support if the check appears incorrect.
- Arrange an alternative subscription before the stated deadline if the person lives elsewhere.
- Do not assume joining another family group immediately will work because the 12-month switching rule may apply.
Do not falsify an address, use a VPN to disguise location, share one Google login, repeatedly switch groups, or change payment-country information to obtain a cheaper plan. Those actions can create additional account or payment problems.

Alternatives when members live separately
YouTube’s current plan overview includes Individual, Family, Two-person, Student, Premium Lite, and prepaid or annual options in eligible markets. Availability and pricing vary by country, account, billing platform, taxes, promotions, and eligibility; check the offer shown at checkout rather than relying on an old price.

Special cases to handle carefully
College students
A student who remains financially part of the family but lives at a separate address may not satisfy the stated same-residential-address rule. YouTube does not publish a general student exception. An eligible full-time student can investigate Student Premium; otherwise, Individual Premium or free YouTube may be the practical choices.
Recent moves
Update account and payment information after a move, but do not assume profile changes alone will guarantee the next 30-day check.
Travel
YouTube confirms recurring checks but does not say how long travel is safe or when an absence triggers review. A short vacation should not be described as automatically disqualifying, and extended travel should not be promised safe.

Country mismatch
A member can be near the manager and still fail setup or eligibility if the account country or Google Pay profile is inconsistent. Treat that as a separate location-and-account issue, not proof that the household test itself was passed.

YouTube Premium Family is intended for one household today, not for unrelated households sharing a bill. The meaningful change is reported enforcement of an existing same-address rule. If every member genuinely lives with the manager, keep the account information accurate and monitor official notices. If someone has a separate permanent home, plan for Individual, Student, Two-person where legitimately available, Premium Lite, or free YouTube instead of relying on a workaround.

Will a child away at college automatically lose Premium?
Not necessarily. YouTube does not publish a general college-student exception or an automatic rejection rule. A student living at another address may not clearly satisfy the stated requirement, so Student Premium or Individual Premium may be safer alternatives.
Can I join another family group after losing access?
Possibly, but YouTube limits family-group changes to once every 12 months. Do not assume an immediate move will work.
Will my Google Account and playlists be deleted?
A loss of Family Plan benefits is separate from the Google Account. YouTube says members keep their accounts and associated subscriptions, playlists, recommendations, and identity when paid access ends.
Does everyone get a 14-day warning?
