Apple Reportedly Stopped Work on an iPhone Subscription Service—Then Took a Different Route

Apple reportedly abandoned its original iPhone subscription project in 2024. Its 2026 Apple Upgrade lease shows a different path—here’s how the options compare.

Short answer: Apple reportedly disbanded the team building an Apple-controlled iPhone subscription in December 2024, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman’s sources. That project was never publicly launched. On July 28, 2026, Apple introduced a separate U.S. product called Apple Upgrade, a Klarna-provided lease with 12- or 24-month terms. Apple therefore appears to have abandoned one subscription design, not recurring iPhone payments altogether.

What Apple was reportedly building

The reported project would have let customers pay a recurring monthly fee for an iPhone, potentially receiving a new model each year. It was described as an Apple-controlled hardware subscription that might have replaced or supplemented the former iPhone Upgrade Program.

However, the available reporting does not establish a final price, launch date, included AppleCare coverage, ownership rules, return conditions, or geographic rollout. Apple had not publicly launched or fully announced the service before the December 2024 report. The claim that work stopped came from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, citing people familiar with the situation, rather than from an Apple cancellation announcement. Thurrott’s report on Gurman’s account describes the project as recently disbanded.

Why the reported project ran into trouble

Software and development delays

Gurman’s reporting, as summarized by Thurrott, said the service had been delayed repeatedly because of software problems during development. That is a reported explanation, not a technical postmortem published by Apple.

  • Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.

Potential conflict with carriers

An Apple-run payment relationship could have competed with wireless carriers’ installment plans and trade-in promotions. Carriers use iPhone financing to attract and retain subscribers; moving that relationship directly to Apple could have weakened an important sales channel. This strategic conflict was part of the reported explanation, not an official Apple statement.

Credit, regulatory and operational complexity

A recurring-device program would require more than a checkout button. Apple or a financial partner would need to handle credit approvals, fraud checks, missed payments, defaults, consumer disclosures, device returns, damage and theft, refurbishment, accounting treatment and coordination with carriers and AppleCare.

The reported plan was said to use technology similar to Apple Pay Later, which Apple discontinued in 2024. Buy-now-pay-later products also face regulatory and consumer-protection scrutiny. The available evidence does not show that a regulator ordered Apple to cancel the iPhone project; it shows why an Apple-operated financing model could be difficult to run at scale.

The 2026 development: Apple Upgrade is a lease

Apple later chose a different structure. In the United States, Apple announced Apple Upgrade on July 28, 2026. The program is provided by Klarna and is explicitly a hardware lease, not the subscription described in the 2024 report.

  • Lease terms are 12 or 24 months.
  • Advertised iPhone pricing starts at $17.99 per month, subject to product selection, eligibility and the lease terms shown at checkout.
  • At the end, a customer can generally enter a new lease and upgrade, buy the device with a one-time payment, or return it and leave the program.
  • Billing and lease information are managed through the Klarna app.
  • Approval requires eligibility and credit approval; AppleCare options may be added separately.

Apple Upgrade is a U.S. offering in the cited announcement, not a worldwide service. Apple’s shopping page also says some card networks and issuers, including American Express, UnionPay, Chase and Capital One, are not accepted by Klarna for the program. Device availability and eligible products can change; Apple’s announcement lists exclusions such as iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, among other products.

The $17.99 figure is a starting monthly advertisement, not a universal total cost. Compare all lease payments, taxes, optional AppleCare, any end-of-lease purchase amount and the value of returning the phone before deciding.

How this differs from the former iPhone Upgrade Program

Apple’s former U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program was a 24-month, 0% APR installment loan financed through Citizens Bank/Citizens One. It included AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, required credit approval and eligible-carrier activation, and generally allowed an upgrade after the equivalent of 12 payments if account and device conditions were met. The customer was financing a purchase and could own the phone after completing the loan. See Apple’s program terms and upgrade instructions.

That loan model is different from both the unlaunched subscription concept and Apple Upgrade’s lease. A subscription’s ownership and return rules were never established publicly. Apple Upgrade lets the customer return, upgrade or purchase at the end, while the former program was principally an installment purchase.

What is happening to existing Upgrade Program members?

Apple’s current program page says the iPhone Upgrade Program is coming to an end. Apple’s July announcement says Apple Upgrade replaces the iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments for new U.S. purchasing activity.

Ending new enrollment does not erase an existing loan. Apple’s published terms say outstanding balances remain the customer’s responsibility if the program is terminated. Existing members should continue required payments and obtain their individual transition or next-phone options directly from Apple rather than assuming they are automatically moved into a Klarna lease.

How the main payment choices compare

Option Ownership Upgrade or exit Protection and credit Carrier conditions Best fit
Apple Upgrade Lease; purchase is optional at the end Start a new lease, buy, or return after 12 or 24 months Klarna credit approval; AppleCare is optional U.S. availability; accepted-card restrictions apply People who expect to return or regularly upgrade a phone
Apple Card Monthly Installments Customer buys the device Keep it, sell it or trade it; no automatic return 0% APR for eligible purchases, subject to Apple Card approval and available credit; Apple advertises 3% Daily Cash on eligible purchases No lease-return requirement Eligible U.S. customers who want ownership with spread-out payments
Carrier financing or promotion Usually ownership after required installments Trade-in credits or upgrade rules vary by carrier Carrier terms, trade-in condition and service requirements vary Often requires a specified plan and continued service Customers willing to meet carrier conditions for credits
Outright purchase Immediate ownership Keep, sell or trade whenever you choose No financing approval or lease account Maximum freedom to switch carriers People who keep phones for several years or want the simplest obligation

Apple describes Apple Card installments at Apple Card and Apple Card Monthly Installments. Its general iPhone buying page lists carrier financing and one-time purchase options.

How to evaluate the total cost

  1. Add every payment. Multiply the quoted monthly amount by the full term and include taxes, fees, AppleCare and any end-of-term purchase amount.
  2. Identify the ownership result. A lease payment buys use for a period; an installment plan finances ownership. Do not compare their monthly figures as if they buy the same thing.
  3. Check upgrade conditions. Confirm whether return, device condition, account standing or a new credit approval is required.
  4. Price the carrier obligation. Include the required wireless plan, trade-in value and any credits that disappear if you switch carriers early.
  5. Review exit and damage rules. Ask who pays for loss, theft, cracks, repairs or early cancellation, and whether AppleCare changes that exposure.

Common edge cases

“Monthly” is not automatically cheaper

A low advertised payment can reflect a longer commitment, a separate protection plan, a required carrier plan or a final purchase amount. Compare the total obligation and whether you own the phone at the end.

Damaged devices

The former Upgrade Program required the phone to be in good physical and operational condition for an upgrade; serious damage could require repair or additional charges. Apple Upgrade has its own lease-return standards, so use the current Apple and Klarna terms rather than assuming the old rules carry over.

Changing carriers

Carrier promotions can depend on staying with a particular carrier and completing the required service period. Apple Upgrade and an outright purchase are not the same as a carrier credit arrangement, but Apple Upgrade still has its own eligibility and payment restrictions.

What the change says about Apple’s strategy

It is inaccurate to say Apple simply launched the subscription it previously canceled. The 2024 project was an unlaunched, Apple-controlled subscription concept with uncertain legal and ownership terms. The 2026 product is a Klarna-backed lease with defined return, upgrade and purchase paths.

The sequence suggests—but does not prove—that Apple changed the financial structure rather than abandoning recurring device payments altogether. Using a specialist provider may leave credit approval and lease billing with Klarna while Apple continues to offer an annual-upgrade route.

Bottom line

Apple reportedly stopped work on its original iPhone subscription project in December 2024; that was a reported internal decision, not the cancellation of a publicly launched product. In July 2026, Apple introduced a different U.S. approach: Apple Upgrade, a Klarna lease. Choose it only if returning or upgrading the phone fits your plans. If you want eventual ownership, compare Apple Card installments, carrier financing and an outright purchase using total cost—not just the monthly number.
