The right chat configuration depends on what your stream is—whether it’s music, video loops, educational content, or interactive sessions—and how much moderation attention you can give it. Understanding YouTube’s chat tools helps you pick the configuration that minimizes spam without silencing legitimate audience participation.
Chat Moderation Settings in YouTube Studio
YouTube provides several controls that apply to all messages in your live chat, whether you’re streaming or not.
Slow mode forces viewers to wait a set amount of time between messages. You can set slow mode to 1 second, 1 minute, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes. At the 10-minute level, a viewer can only send one message every 10 minutes. Slow mode immediately reduces spam and prevents the chat from becoming an unreadable stream of noise. For a 24/7 stream, slow mode is almost essential.
Comment filtering lets you hide or flag messages that match certain criteria without immediately deleting them. YouTube can filter:

- Messages containing potential spam
- Messages containing potential abusive language
- Messages containing potential sexual content
Each filter can be set to “hold for review” (you manually approve or deny) or “automatically block” (they’re hidden from chat immediately). The “hold for review” setting is less aggressive and catches fewer false positives, but requires you to actively moderate. “Automatically block” is stricter and requires no action, but may hide some legitimate messages.
Emote-only chat restricts messages to only emoji. This is rarely useful for a 24/7 stream unless your audience is specifically emoji-centric.
Followers-only chat allows only viewers who follow your channel to send messages. This is a strong anti-spam measure but reduces engagement from new viewers. It’s useful during high-spam periods but restrictive for a continuous stream.
Verified users only restricts chat to verified YouTube accounts. This is the harshest setting and only appropriate if you’re dealing with extreme spam.

Music and video loops (lofi, sleep music, meditation, study beats): These streams typically have passive audiences listening in the background. Most don’t expect active chat. Set slow mode to 5-10 minutes, enable automatic filtering for potential spam and abusive content, and consider followers-only mode if spam becomes heavy. Or disable chat entirely to remove the variable entirely.

Educational or instructional streams: Use slow mode at 1-2 minutes to allow discussion without overwhelming real-time chat. Hold questionable messages for review rather than auto-blocking, since legitimate questions might trigger filters. Enable followers-only mode only if spam becomes disruptive.
Community or discussion streams: Use slow mode at 1 minute, hold filtered messages for review, and allow non-followers to chat. This encourages broader participation while still controlling the flood.
Gaming or highly interactive streams: Slow mode at 1 second or disabled entirely (for real-time engagement), filters held for review, and active moderation required.

Disabling Chat Entirely
YouTube allows you to disable chat on live streams. To do this, go to the stream settings and toggle “Show chat” off. When chat is disabled:
- No messages appear on the stream
- Viewers cannot send messages during the broadcast
- You avoid moderation entirely
This is an underrated option for 24/7 streams. If your stream is music, video loops, or automated content, chat serves no purpose. The content is continuous and non-interactive, so disabling chat eliminates spam, harassment, and moderation overhead with zero downside to your audience.

Chat Moderation Best Practices for Continuous Streams
Set filters before going live: Don’t wait until spam appears to configure filters. Pre-configure slow mode, filters, and follower requirements before you start broadcasting. Most moderators wait too long, letting chat become a disaster before taking action.
Use slow mode aggressively on 24/7 streams: A viewer who has to wait 5-10 minutes between messages is less likely to spam. Spammers want rapid-fire posting; slow mode makes spamming impractical.
Monitor for coordinated raids: Occasionally, a coordinated group will join your stream and flood chat with the same message (promotion, harassment, etc.). YouTube’s spam filter catches some of these, but not all. If you see sudden message flooding, increase slow mode and enable followers-only temporarily.
Allow automation in moderation: You don’t need to personally review every message. YouTube’s automatic filters handle the vast majority of spam. Only hold messages for review if you actively expect to do that review.
Know what triggers false positives: Words like “free” or links to other YouTube channels commonly trigger filters. If you want to discuss YouTube channels or mention free content, use “hold for review” rather than “auto-block” to avoid blocking legitimate discussion.
Respond to genuine viewers:A 24/7 stream doesn’t require constant chat engagement, but responding to occasional questions or comments builds audience loyalty. Don’t engage with spam or harassment, but a short reply to a genuine viewer shows the stream is watched.
Spam Sources and How Filters Prevent Them
Self-promotion: Viewers spamming links to their own channels or content. Filters for unverified channels and new channels catch many of these. Enable “automatically block” for this category.
Cryptocurrency and “get rich quick” schemes: These messages often trigger spam and potentially abusive content filters. Let these auto-block.
Hateful or harassing language: YouTube flags this automatically. Set to auto-block unless you actively want to review before hiding.

Off-topic commercial promotions: These are often harder to filter automatically. Slow mode makes this less appealing because the spammer has to wait long intervals to post repeated messages.

Duplicate or repetitive messages: YouTube doesn’t have a built-in filter for spam-like repetition, but slow mode naturally discourages it.
Bots: Some services try to post automated comments promoting products or services. Most don’t make it past the spam filter, but new bot techniques appear constantly. Monitor your chat and report patterns manually if needed.
When to Escalate: Banning Users
YouTube allows you to ban specific users from your chat. A banned user can still watch the stream, but their messages don’t appear and they can’t see what others wrote (they see “the chat is unavailable” message).
Ban users if:
- They repeatedly violate your community rules despite moderation settings
- They’re harassing other viewers
- They’re spamming after being given warnings (via chat moderation)
- They’re using discriminatory or hateful language
To ban someone, right-click their username in chat and select “Block user.” You can unblock them later if needed.

Live chat is how casual viewers become regular viewers and community members. Disabling or heavily restricting chat can feel unwelcoming, especially if your stream is educational or discussion-based.
Balance moderation with openness. Use slow mode and filters rather than followers-only mode, which creates a gatekeep effect. Allow new channels to participate. Respond to genuine questions.
For music and video loops with passive audiences, disable chat entirely—the tradeoff between moderation burden and engagement is zero either way.

For streams where discussion matters, configure filters to catch obvious spam without requiring manual review. Let genuine participation flourish.
Multi-Stream Moderation Challenges
If you’re streaming to YouTube and other platforms simultaneously (through a service like RTMP redistribution), each platform has different chat. YouTube’s moderation tools only control YouTube chat. Comments on other platforms require separate moderation.
This is another reason some creators disable chat on 24/7 streams entirely—managing chat on multiple platforms simultaneously during an endless broadcast is logistically overwhelming.
Chat and Revenue
YouTube chat presence affects community engagement metrics, which influence recommendations and channel growth. A completely dead chat (no messages for hours) suggests the stream has no audience, which can depress recommendations.
But the opposite—chat so active it’s mostly spam—also harms perception. Moderating chat to keep it healthy improves the overall quality signal YouTube uses for recommendations.
This is subtle, but it means completely disabling chat vs moderating an active chat are different signals. If you have consistent genuine viewership, allow chat with smart filters. If you have no audience engagement anyway, disable it rather than displaying dead chat.
