Your local utility still charges separately for delivering electricity, and those delivery rates or your usage can change. A supplier’s rate can also rise if the offer is variable or introductory.
What a cheaper supplier rate changes—and what it does not
An Ohio electric bill combines three costs: generation, transmission, and distribution. Generation is the electricity itself. Transmission moves it at high voltage to local substations; distribution uses local lines, substations, meters, and related equipment to deliver it to your home.
Choosing a competitive supplier, or receiving service through an aggregation program, changes the generation arrangement. It does not replace the utility responsible for the poles, wires, delivery, and outage response. The utility’s Standard Service Offer (SSO), shown as the Price to Compare, is the baseline for comparing generation offers—not the cost of the whole bill.
The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) says transmission and distribution typically account for about half of an Ohio electric bill. That is a broad estimate, not a fixed share for every customer or billing period. Distribution charges continue while your home is connected to the grid, even if you use little electricity, as OCC explains in Understanding Your Ohio Electric Bill: Where Your Money Goes.

No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Why the total can rise after you switch
Delivery charges can change independently
Shopping for a supplier does not freeze your utility’s transmission or distribution charges. Those charges are separate from the supplier’s generation price and can change through utility rate proceedings.
For example, OCC reports that the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) approved an AEP Ohio distribution settlement on April 1, 2026. The settlement raised base distribution revenues by $11 million compared with the $97 million AEP had requested. OCC also describes higher transmission charges approved two weeks earlier and says most AEP Ohio residential customers could still see a net increase in overall bills after credits. This is an AEP-specific case, not a rate change that should be assumed for every Ohio utility. See the OCC AEP Ohio electric distribution rate case update.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Your usage may have changed
A bill can increase when you use more electricity, even if the per-kilowatt-hour supplier price is lower. Weather, a change in household routines or occupancy, and appliance use can all affect consumption. Compare the kilowatt-hours on bills covering similar-length periods before concluding that the rate alone caused the change.
Your generation rate may not be what you expected
A low advertised rate may be temporary, or a variable rate may change during the contract. AEP Ohio notes that rates can change and recommends checking generation costs when a bill rises despite steady usage. For a dated illustration only, the AEP residential Price to Compare was $0.1097/kWh from July 1 through September 30, 2026; that period has passed, so the figure is not a current rate. The applicable Price to Compare depends on utility territory and effective date. See Energy Choice Ohio.

How to check whether the offer is saving you money
- Separate the bill into its parts. Find the generation charge and the delivery charges for transmission and distribution. Locate your utility’s Price to Compare; it is a generation benchmark, not a total-bill estimate. OCC’s bill explainer describes the components.
- Compare the offer with the Price to Compare. Use Energy Choice Ohio’s Apples to Apples comparison tool to compare generation prices, contract terms, and other plan details for your service area.
- Read the full contract terms. Check whether the rate is fixed or variable, how long the contract lasts, whether there are monthly fees, and what cancellation terms apply. OCC warns that some short offers are introductory rates that later move to variable pricing. Its numeric offer examples are historical, not current prices. See OCC’s guide to choosing an electric supplier.
- Compare bills over the same period and at similar usage. Look at kilowatt-hours, the generation rate and charge, and delivery charges—not just the bill total or the supplier’s per-kWh figure. A lower generation cost does not remove utility delivery charges.
If your usage stayed the same but the bill went up
Check each rate and charge against the prior bill, then review the utility’s usage history for an unusual daily or hourly spike. If the usage pattern changed unexpectedly, an appliance or equipment issue may be worth investigating. AEP Ohio’s bill guidance and usage tools can help its customers review usage and understand their statements. For an unfamiliar charge or a pattern you cannot explain, contact your utility and ask which bill component or usage reading changed.
