Costco does not offer free shopping passes. The real options are a Costco Shop Card that a paid member buys for you, purchasing Costco Pharmacy prescriptions as a nonmember, or buying a membership outright, which is the only route that gives general warehouse and online shopping access.
Why there is no free shopping pass
Costco’s customer service page “Does Costco offer free shopping passes?” (published August 4, 2026) states: “Costco does not offer free shopping passes.” The same page adds: “However, you must be a paid member to enter the warehouse and purchase any other items.”
Any offer promising free warehouse entry or a general shopping pass is therefore not a Costco program. The exceptions below are the ones Costco itself documents.
The Costco Shop Card
Costco’s “Shop Card FAQs” page says: “Non-members as well as members may use Costco Shop Cards to shop at any Costco location in the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico, as well as online at Costco.com.” The catch is who buys it. Costco’s FAQ says a member must purchase the card. The Shop Card is a payment method, not a membership, so holding one does not make you a member.

How to use a Shop Card
- Ask a paid Costco member to purchase a Shop Card for you.
- Note whether the card is physical or digital. Digital cards cannot currently be redeemed at food-court kiosks.
- Before you travel, call the warehouse you plan to visit. Ask about entry for nonmembers and whether the card can be used in the department you need.
- At checkout, present the card as a payment method. Costco’s U.S. payment-method page lists Shop Cards among the accepted methods for warehouse and Costco.com purchases.
Where a Shop Card may fall short
- Entry. Costco’s free-pass page says a paid member is required to enter the warehouse and buy other items. The Shop Card FAQ describes nonmember use, so the card works as a Costco-defined exception rather than a general right of entry. Entry procedures can vary by location.
- Service areas. Accepting a payment method does not establish permission to use every service area. The sources reviewed do not establish a uniform current rule for gas, optical, hearing, or food court access. Check with the specific warehouse before you make the trip.
Costco Pharmacy prescriptions
Nonmembers may purchase prescriptions from Costco Pharmacy, either online or at a warehouse. This is a genuine exception, but it covers prescriptions only. It does not let you browse or buy groceries, electronics, or other merchandise.
Full access: buying a membership as a gift
If you want general shopping, the direct route is a paid membership, and Costco offers a Gift of Membership. Costco’s Gift of Gold Star Membership page lists Gold Star at $65 per year and says it includes shopping in warehouses and online. This is the listed price on Costco’s page as of 2026. Prices can change, so confirm the current figure on Costco’s site before you buy.

Choosing the right route
- You only need prescriptions: Use Costco Pharmacy. No card or membership is needed.
- You need a few specific purchases and a member can help: Ask that member to buy a Shop Card, then confirm entry and department access with the warehouse first.
- You plan to shop regularly: Compare the annual membership fee against what you expect to spend. A membership is the only route the sources describe as providing general warehouse and online shopping.
