Yes. Instacart’s ChatGPT app lets you turn a meal idea or grocery list into a cart, review it, and—where available—pay through an embedded checkout without leaving ChatGPT. Instacart, not ChatGPT, supplies the local retailer, processes the order, and arranges shopping and delivery. The integration is most useful for getting from an idea to a draft cart; it does not guarantee the lowest price or remove the need to check what you are buying.
What the ChatGPT–Instacart app does
Launched on December 8, 2025, the app combines ChatGPT’s conversational interface with Instacart’s grocery marketplace. You can describe a recipe, meal plan, or list in ordinary language; the app can use local retailer listings to assemble a cart for you to inspect. Instacart said the launch covered more than 1,800 retailers, but that figure is not a promise that every retailer or item is available in every location. OpenAI’s announcement and Instacart’s launch announcement describe the integration.
Think of the generated cart as a first draft, not an autonomous order. You remain responsible for confirming the products, quantities, delivery details, and final total before paying.
How to connect Instacart to ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings → Apps.
- Find Instacart and connect the app. Sign in to your Instacart account when prompted.
- Start a grocery-related conversation, then invoke the app by typing
@Instacartor selecting it from the conversation’s tools menu. - Describe what you want, review the cart the app builds, make changes, and proceed through the available checkout flow.
Those are the setup instructions Instacart gave at launch. ChatGPT’s menus can change; if the labels differ, look in the current app directory or tools area. Instacart also advised mobile users to update the ChatGPT app if they could not see the feature.

From a meal idea to a cart
A useful prompt gives the app enough detail to find appropriate items without implying that its suggestions are guaranteed to be perfect. For example:
@Instacart, help me shop for ingredients for apple pie for six people.@Instacart, build a grocery cart for five vegetarian dinners under $100. Show the item subtotal separately from fees.@Instacart, find ingredients for tacos for four people. Prefer products available for delivery today, and show alternatives for anything unavailable.@Instacart, turn this list into a cart. Use the brands and package sizes I named, and ask before substituting.
Include dietary restrictions, preferred brands, package sizes, quantities, a preferred retailer, and acceptable substitutions when those details matter. A budget in a prompt may describe the groceries rather than the final amount due: fees, taxes, tip, promotions, and membership terms can change the checkout total.
Does checkout really happen inside ChatGPT?
For the launched Instacart app, yes: Instacart describes an embedded shopping and checkout experience. Its announcement says transactions use the Agentic Commerce Protocol and are powered by Stripe, with credit cards and digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay supported. The precise options can depend on the account and order, so check the payment choices shown at checkout rather than assuming every method works for every purchase.

“Without leaving ChatGPT” describes where the shopping interface and checkout appear; it does not mean ChatGPT becomes the grocer or delivery service. ChatGPT handles the conversation and AI-assisted cart building. Instacart provides the product catalog, retailer connection, account and order infrastructure, and fulfillment. OpenAI’s explanation of Instant Checkout likewise distinguishes the checkout interface from the merchant’s fulfillment responsibilities.
What happens after you pay
Instacart’s shopper-and-delivery network handles the order. A shopper picks the items from the selected local retailer and delivers them through Instacart. Delivery slots, stock, substitutions, shopper communication, missing-item reports, and refunds remain subject to Instacart’s ordinary order processes and applicable local rules. The available announcements do not establish that every category—including age-restricted or regulated goods—works identically in the ChatGPT app.
For a delivery problem or an incorrect item, use the order and support options in your Instacart account. ChatGPT is not a replacement for Instacart’s post-order support.

Check these details before placing the order
- Retailer and address: Confirm the store and delivery address are the ones you intend to use.
- Products: Check brand, package size, quantity, dietary requirements, and any important ingredients.
- Substitutions: Review what may be substituted and whether the proposed alternatives suit you.
- Timing: Confirm the available delivery window; it depends on local service and availability.
- Cost: Review the complete total, including item prices, delivery and service fees, taxes, tip, promotions, and any membership benefits applied.
- Payment: Verify the account and payment option before confirming.
Instacart says the app can draw on local retailer data, inventory, pricing, and shopping preferences. Those inputs can make a cart more relevant, but grocery availability and prices change, and a product match may not capture what you meant. OpenAI’s general guidance also notes that displayed shopping prices may be delayed or not the lowest available; see its shopping results help page. Do not approve a cart solely because it fits a prompt or looks plausible.
Availability and limits
Instacart announced availability on desktop web, mobile web, iOS, and Android. Whether the app appears for you can still depend on your location, ChatGPT account and app version, local retailers, and item category. The launch announcement does not establish a complete country-by-country availability list, so the named platforms should not be read as a guarantee of worldwide access. Instacart’s more than 1,800-retailer launch figure describes announced coverage, not a universal local selection.

Instacart has also cited a broader network of nearly 100,000 stores and coverage of more than 98% of North American households. Those are company-wide network figures, not guarantees that a particular store, household, or product is served through the ChatGPT integration.

Is it cheaper than using Instacart directly?
No universal ChatGPT-specific discount, fee waiver, or price guarantee is established by the launch announcements. The total can depend on retailer and location, delivery or pickup, order size, membership, fees, taxes, tips, and promotions. Instacart’s July 22, 2026 pricing-principles statement discusses delivery-fee offers on some orders, but does not prove that every ChatGPT order qualifies or costs less than ordering another way.
When price matters, compare the final total—not only the item subtotal—with the Instacart app or website and the retailer’s own ordering channel. The ChatGPT app’s clearest advantage is conversational planning and cart creation, not verified savings. A retailer’s direct service may be a better fit if it offers loyalty pricing, store-specific coupons, preferred pickup, or a lower overall cost.

Connecting the app involves signing in to an Instacart account, and the embedded checkout handles payment. Instacart describes the transaction flow as secure and Stripe-powered; that is not a guarantee against account mistakes, incorrect product selection, delivery problems, or every privacy risk. The launch materials do not give a complete, permission-by-permission account of data sharing or retention.

When to use the regular Instacart app or another option
The ChatGPT integration is a reasonable choice when you are starting with a recipe or meal idea, want a quick first-draft cart, and are comfortable reviewing the selections. The regular Instacart app or website may suit you better when you want more direct control over retailer browsing, coupons, substitutions, delivery options, and order history. Ordering from a retailer directly may make more sense when its loyalty benefits, inventory, or delivery service outweigh the convenience of a marketplace.
Instacart also offers its own AI assistant in its marketplace, according to Instacart’s description. That is a separate experience; its checkout behavior and availability should not be assumed to match the ChatGPT app.
If the app or order does not work as expected
Instacart does not appear
Update the ChatGPT mobile app, then check Settings → Apps or the current app-directory location. You can also try adding Instacart from the conversation’s tools menu. If the app remains unavailable, use Instacart directly; access may depend on account, location, or current availability.
The cart contains the wrong items
Ask for specific brands, sizes, quantities, dietary requirements, and acceptable substitutions. Request alternatives and review the revised cart rather than assuming a vague prompt will produce an exact match.
An item is out of stock or the total is higher than expected
Ask for another brand or size, inspect substitution settings, and check the final cart before paying. Reconcile any budget against the full checkout total, not just grocery prices.
You need help after ordering
Use Instacart’s order and support options for delivery, missing-item, refund, or shopper issues; those remain part of Instacart’s service.
