Yosemite’s Dome Fire: Why Officials No Longer List a Campfire as the Cause

The Dome Fire’s reported cause label changed, but the reason has not been disclosed. The NPS investigation remains open, and the campfire lead is not proof of the cause.

The Dome Fire’s cause has not been established in the available reporting. A Sacramento Bee report published Oct. 5, 2026, said the incident listing changed from “Human – Abandoned Campfire” to “undetermined” and then “under investigation.” The report did not explain why the label changed; it quoted the National Park Service as saying the investigation remains open.

What is known about the Dome Fire’s cause?

The latest status reported by The Sacramento Bee on Oct. 5, 2026, was “under investigation” by the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch. The NPS reportedly said it does not comment on open investigations and that “A report will be released once the investigation is complete.” No completion date or final finding was provided in the report.

The same report described this sequence on the InciWeb incident page: “Human – Abandoned Campfire” → “undetermined” → “under investigation.” It said officials had appeared to confirm an abandoned campfire before the listing changed, but did not say what prompted the changes. The sequence is a history of reported status labels, not a final determination that a campfire started the fire.

Why did the cause label change?

The reason has not been disclosed in the available report. It offers no confirmed alternative cause, nor does it explain whether investigators received new evidence or revised an earlier assessment. Until the NPS completes its investigation and releases its report, the cause should be treated as unresolved.

A request for information is not proof

The NPS reportedly sought information from people near Chilnualna Falls between Sept. 9 and 15 who may have seen someone with a campfire. That public request is an investigative lead: it does not establish that a campfire caused the Dome Fire or identify a person responsible.

The report also said fire restrictions had been in place since Aug. 1 at elevations at or below 8,000 feet. That restriction is relevant context, but by itself does not establish how the fire began.

Fire Starter Survival Kit, Green
  • Survival fire starter kit: The fire starter kit contains 1pcs 5/16" thick ferro rod with striker and paracord wrist lanyard, 1pcs 13.8" long wick hemp cord tinder and 1pcs multifunctional outdoor bag with a hook. This kit has everything you need to start a fire and you won't need anything else.
  • Wick hemp cord: The wick hemp cord is 13.8" long and has a burn time of up to 20 minutes. To make it easier to be ignited by flint, we infused the wick hemp cord with full wax. Rub one end of the wax-impregnated hemp rope before use, the fluffy the better.
  • Multifunctional outdoor bag: To avoid losing the ferro rod and wick hemp cord, we packed them into this multifunctional outdoor bag. This bag is very well made and it has extra space for other things.
  • Ferro rod: The ferrocerium rod is made of high density fire steel and can produce sparks over 5000 F degrees when struck by a striker. The sturdy wooden handle allows you to hold it tightly without letting it go. Its biggest advantage is that it can be easily used in very humid environments. Scrape off the black protective coating before use.
  • Multifunctional striker: The striker is made of high quality steel with a black plated finish. The size of striker is 3 x 0.8" and can be used as a bottle opener, hex wrench, scale and map ruler.

What was the fire’s reported size and containment?

In its Oct. 5, 2026, report, The Sacramento Bee attributed a weekend snapshot of 6,760 acres and 40% containment to California Interagency Incident Management Team 4. It also reported that slightly more than 1,000 personnel were assigned. These are figures from that dated report, not a live status update.

The report described crews mopping up and improving lines on the fire’s southern and western fronts while the fire continued east. Helicopters were making water drops, and firefighters were positioned near active areas, including Ostrander Trail. California Interagency Incident Management Team 4 reportedly assumed operations on Friday. The report also said two pilots died when their helicopter crashed during firefighting operations.

Is Yosemite open during the Dome Fire?

The Oct. 5 report said most of Yosemite remained open, while particular areas, roads and trails were closed. It described closures from Wawona north toward Glacier Point Road and from Wawona Road east to Chinquapin, with the closure area expanded east beyond Ostrander Lake to Buena Vista Creek. Chilnualna Falls, Bridalveil Falls and some trails south of Glacier Point Road were among the affected places.

According to the report, Glacier Point Road had been closed on Sept. 23 because of smoke visibility and nearby firefighting operations. The article said there was no imminent threat to infrastructure at that time. Those details describe conditions as reported on Oct. 5, 2026; road, trail and area access can change. Check the National Park Service’s current Yosemite conditions page before traveling.

What to watch for next

The next meaningful update on the cause is a completed NPS investigation and its promised report. The available Oct. 5 account does not provide a final finding or a timeline for publication. For travel decisions, use current NPS conditions rather than relying on the closures or access information in a dated news report.
