The claim remains contested: Al Jazeera said it could not independently verify the full extent of the government’s gains, and the Houthis rejected reports of their losses.
What happened in the counteroffensive?
On October 4, Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi announced a major operation intended to recover territory held by the Houthis. He described its aim as “recovering the remaining territories.” The Saudi-backed offensive advanced along Yemen’s western coast, with Associated Press reporting that the operation began under Saudi coalition air cover.
Yemeni officials told the Associated Press on October 5 that government-aligned forces had retaken Dhubab and captured nearby towns. The government’s subsequent claim about Mokha was a separate claim about the port city, not proof that every position along the coast or around the nearby strait had changed hands.
What is known about control of Mokha?
Accounts published on October 6 described different stages and locations of the advance. Yemen’s Defence Ministry said Mokha had fallen to government forces. Reuters sources cited by Al Jazeera said government forces had reached the city’s outskirts while Houthi fighters withdrew toward the highlands. The Houthi military spokesman dismissed reports of government gains as “fabricated heroics.” Al Jazeera said it could not independently verify the full extent of those gains.

| Account | Location covered | When reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yemeni officials, as reported by AP | Dhubab and nearby towns | October 5, 2026 | Officials said government-aligned forces retook Dhubab and captured nearby towns; this account does not by itself establish control of Mokha. |
| Yemen’s Defence Ministry, as reported by Al Jazeera | Mokha | By October 6, 2026 | The ministry said the city had fallen to government forces; the claim was not independently verified in Al Jazeera’s account. |
| Reuters sources, cited by Al Jazeera | Mokha’s outskirts and the route toward the highlands | By October 6, 2026 | The sources said government forces had reached the outskirts and Houthi fighters had retreated toward the highlands; this does not confirm durable control of the city. |
| Houthi military spokesman, as reported by Al Jazeera | Government-reported gains | By October 6, 2026 | The spokesman rejected the reports. Al Jazeera said it could not independently verify the full extent of the gains. |
The most accurate description as of October 7 is that the government claimed to have recaptured Mokha during a counteroffensive, while control remained disputed in the available reporting. Reaching a city’s outskirts, a ministry’s announcement of its fall, and independently established, sustained control are not interchangeable claims.
Why Mokha and Bab el-Mandeb matter
Mokha is on Yemen’s Red Sea coast, near Bab el-Mandeb, the strait linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. The waterway is part of the shipping route between Europe and Asia through Egypt’s Suez Canal. The Associated Press reported in 2026 that around 12% of world trade, including a fourth of global container traffic, passes through the narrows.

The Associated Press also described Bab el-Mandeb as a route used for Saudi oil exports to Asia when shipping through Hormuz was disrupted. The Houthis’ September 2026 capture of Mokha and nearby islands heightened concern about security and access near the strait. But control of Mokha alone does not establish control of Bab el-Mandeb or prove that shipping through the waterway has stopped.
How the fighting fits into Yemen’s longer conflict
The Houthis seized Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, in 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened the following year in support of the internationally recognized government. The Associated Press describes years of fighting followed by a 2022 ceasefire that was largely honored until the escalation reported in 2026.

The latest counteroffensive is also a signal of intent, not just a report about territory. Ahmed Nagi, a senior Yemen analyst at the International Crisis Group, told the Associated Press on October 6 that the Saudi-backed offensive aimed to “send a clear message that it has the capabilities to change the map of control inside Yemen.” That describes the campaign’s stated strategic purpose; it does not confirm which forces hold Mokha.
The humanitarian toll
The latest fighting is adding to an existing humanitarian crisis. The Associated Press reported that the International Organization for Migration said more than 184,000 people had been displaced since the beginning of August 2026. The same report said nearly 22,000 people were displaced between September 27 and October 3.

Separately, Al Jazeera reported World Health Organization figures of at least 959 people killed and more than 4,200 wounded in the latest fighting. Those figures are attributed to the WHO as reported by Al Jazeera; they should not be combined with the displacement totals, which measure a different outcome and period.

Because the reports distinguish between advances near Mokha and a claim that the city itself has fallen, subsequent accounts need to clarify the location, the date and who is making each statement. Confirmation of a ministry’s claim is different from evidence that forces maintain control; the October 6 account from Al Jazeera had not independently verified the full extent of the government’s gains.
