There is no independent Yelp job for removing spam comments on a business’s behalf. What exists is a content moderation function inside Yelp’s User Operations team. Its staff evaluate reported content against Yelp’s Content Guidelines and Terms of Service and decide whether it should come down. Anyone paid by a business to make a review disappear is working outside that process, and Yelp’s rules prohibit it. This guide explains the legitimate role, what the public evidence says about pay, and how to pursue the job or handle a review problem without breaking the rules.
Does Yelp hire people to remove spam reviews?
Yelp employs moderators, but it does not hire freelancers or agencies to remove reviews for businesses. Yelp describes User Operations as a team separate from its automated recommendation software. Its work includes investigating fraudulent and inappropriate activity and removing users who engage in deceptive behavior. When a community member, a business owner, or an automated system flags a potential issue, moderators review it against Yelp’s Content Guidelines. If the content violates those guidelines, Yelp may remove it.
The distinction matters because the phrase “spam comments removal job” suggests a service that works for the business being reviewed. The role that actually exists works for Yelp, applies Yelp’s rules, and has no obligation to any business that files a complaint.
What a Yelp content moderator does
A current Yelp job listing for a “User Operations Associate, Content Moderation” role describes the work as evaluating reviews, photos, and other information to determine whether content meets Yelp’s Content Guidelines and Terms of Service. The listing emphasizes reading the context of users’ stories and verifying whether content meets those standards.
The reviewed listing does not establish salary, full hiring requirements, remote eligibility, or whether the posting will stay open. Those details change, so check the live posting before drawing conclusions about the role.
What reporting a review can and cannot do
The grounds Yelp reviews
Yelp’s reporting guidance identifies possible policy problems such as:
Rank #2
- Keep track of everything from attendance to test scores
- Spiral bound
- Measures 8-1/2" x 11"
- A conflict of interest between the reviewer and the business.
- Content not based on the reviewer’s own consumer experience.
- Content that is irrelevant or otherwise violates Yelp’s policies.
Yelp also warns that suspicion alone may not be enough. A negative tone, a disagreement about facts, or a business’s dissatisfaction does not by itself prove that a review is spam.
What a business cannot do
A business cannot remove reviews from its own Yelp page. Reporting a review asks Yelp to investigate; it does not guarantee removal. Yelp says it will not remove a critical review after it is reported unless the review clearly violates its Content Guidelines. Its moderation guidance puts it directly: “Keep in mind that simply reporting a review does not guarantee its removal.”

When someone demands money
Sometimes a business receives an explicit demand for money or freebies in exchange for removing a review or not publishing one. Yelp’s guidance for businesses says that such a demand violates its Content Guidelines and Terms of Service, and it instructs the business to contact Yelp Support. The guidance states: “Demanding money or freebies in exchange for removal or not posting a review is a violation of Yelp’s Content Guidelines and Terms of Service.”
Why paid removal services fall outside the rules
Yelp’s Terms of Service prohibit users from posting fake or defamatory reviews and from trading reviews. They also prohibit compensating someone to post, modify, refrain from posting, or remove a review. The terms restrict attempts to manipulate Yelp’s recommendation software or fraud detection systems.
A service that promises to remove reviews for a fee is therefore selling something Yelp forbids. Even apart from the rules, an outside party has no authority to compel Yelp to decide differently. Yelp’s moderators make that decision under their own policy.
Earning potential: what is and is not established
The two paths people often confuse differ in employer, decision authority, and policy status. The table below compares them using only what the public sources establish.
| Path | Who makes the removal decision | Earnings evidence | Policy status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yelp User Operations Associate, Content Moderation | Yelp moderators, applying Yelp’s Content Guidelines and Terms of Service | Salary not stated in the reviewed listing; the listing itself is the only verified evidence | Employment with Yelp under its own rules |
| Outside “spam removal” service paid by a business | An outside party with no authority to compel Yelp | Not stated; no verified fee or outcome data in the reviewed sources | Prohibited: paying someone to remove a review violates Yelp’s Terms of Service |
Because the reviewed sources do not give comparable salary figures, there is no basis for estimating what a moderator earns or what a removal service charges. The following points are also not established by the public evidence:
- Expected earnings or pay ranges for the role.
- Required qualifications beyond what the listing describes.
- Hiring geography or remote eligibility.
- Whether the role is freelance (it is described as a position at Yelp, not as contract work).
- Whether the listing will remain open.
What the platform-wide removal figure means
Yelp reported in its annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that approximately 9% of reviews submitted to Yelp had been removed as of December 31, 2025 (Yelp, 2025). This is a platform-wide historical figure. It is not an approval rate for flagged reviews, a removal target for staff, a current-period rate, or an estimate of any individual business’s chances.
How to pursue the legitimate role
- Find the “User Operations Associate, Content Moderation” listing in Yelp’s job postings and confirm that it is still open.
- Read the full posting for location, pay information if published, and required qualifications, since the sources reviewed do not establish these.
- Read Yelp’s Content Guidelines and Terms of Service before applying, because the job is to apply them consistently.
- Prepare concrete examples of applying a written rule set to ambiguous text, because the listing stresses reading context and verifying whether content meets standards.
If you run a business and a review looks wrong
- Do not pay anyone, offer freebies, or arrange a review exchange. Each of these is prohibited.
- Use the report option on the specific review and describe the policy concern, such as a conflict of interest or content not based on the reviewer’s own experience.
- Accept that the decision belongs to Yelp. Reporting does not guarantee removal.
- If the review is critical but does not clearly violate Yelp’s policies, respond publicly on your page instead.
- If anyone demands money or freebies in exchange for removing or withholding a review, contact Yelp Support.
The legitimate version of this career is moderating content for Yelp, not clearing reviews for businesses. Pursue it by reading the live listing and Yelp’s own rules, and treat any offer to remove reviews for a fee as a policy violation.
