It uses the standard application and interview process; applying does not guarantee acceptance, and students are not required to leave school early.
How YC Early Decision works
YC describes the option as a way to “apply to YC while you’re still in school and reserve your spot in a future batch.” Students apply for a batch that begins after their planned graduation, rather than applying to join the upcoming batch while still studying.
The usual schedule YC gives is to apply during the fall of a student’s final year and join the summer batch after graduating in spring. YC says applicants may request another future batch “within reason,” so the right target depends on when you expect to finish school and the batch timing that works for you.
The application and interview process is the same as for the upcoming batch. YC says it funds accepted companies immediately and confirms a place in the requested future batch. That is not an assurance of admission: applicants still go through YC’s selection process, and the program’s investment is not the same as unrestricted cash available without further steps.

When students can apply—and what happens to school plans
You do not have to be in your final year
YC says students can apply before their final year. If accepted, they can finish the school year they are currently in and join a later batch, or decide to leave school and start sooner. Those are possible choices after acceptance, not conditions of applying.
Plan around the batch start date
Use your expected graduation date to choose a future batch. YC’s common example is spring graduation followed by its summer batch. If another batch better matches your schedule, the Early Decision page says applicants can request a future batch within reason; the current application’s available choices and instructions should guide the actual submission.

Current application details: Winter 2027
As of October 8, 2026, YC’s live application page lists Winter 2027 as accepting applications, with the batch scheduled for January to March in San Francisco. The page gives an on-time deadline of November 2 at 8pm PT and says decisions are due by December 11. It also says applications are open for future Spring, Summer, and Fall batches. These are cycle-specific details, not standing deadlines.
For the current Early Decision application, YC says to select “A batch after Winter 2027” in the batch-preference question and specify the batch you want. Because the wording and choices can change between cycles, check the live YC application and Early Decision page immediately before applying.

YC says promising applications may be invited to a video interview. For this cycle, most interviews are expected in November and December, and decisions are typically made on the interview day. YC says it invests as soon as a company is accepted rather than waiting for the batch to start.

In-person participation in San Francisco
YC’s FAQ says the batch takes place in person in San Francisco, with a three-day in-person kickoff and weekly meetups. A future-batch reservation therefore means planning for that location and schedule, not taking part remotely while remaining elsewhere.
Full-time work on the company
YC expects founders to work full time on their company during the batch and afterward. Its FAQ says, “We invest $500,000 in each company.” That figure describes YC’s stated investment; it does not change the program’s full-time commitment or mean that a student can participate in the batch while continuing full-time study or employment.
How Early Decision differs from YC’s earlier version
YC announced an earlier Early Decision program on September 20, 2018, for the 2019 batch. That version let undergraduate and graduate students apply one batch early; applicants who were not accepted could try again in the regular cycle.
