IG is usually the better all-round broker for experienced traders who want the widest selection of markets, spread betting, advanced order types, or access to a long-established multi-asset platform. XTB is often the simpler and potentially cheaper choice for investors who want shares, ETFs, fractional investing, and a modern interface alongside CFD trading.
There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on your country, whether you are investing or trading, and the exact XTB or IG legal entity that will hold your account. Products, leverage, fees, tax treatment, and investor protection can change substantially between the UK, European Union, and other markets.
XTB vs IG: quick verdict
| Trader or investor profile | Likely better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Buy-and-hold investor wanting shares and ETFs | XTB | Its platform is designed to combine investing with trading, and in some regions it offers fractional investing and commission-free dealing subject to conditions. |
| Trader wanting the broadest range of markets | IG | IG generally offers a larger multi-asset catalogue, including forex, indices, commodities, shares, ETFs, options, and other derivatives, depending on location. |
| UK trader wanting spread betting | IG | IG is one of the best-known UK spread-betting providers. XTB’s UK offering is more focused on CFDs and investing rather than being a direct spread-betting alternative. |
| Beginner wanting a clean, relatively simple interface | XTB | xStation is modern and combines charts, news, analysis, watchlists, and account information in one interface. |
| Advanced trader wanting established charting and execution tools | IG | IG offers its own web and mobile platforms plus integrations such as MetaTrader in selected regions and other advanced tools depending on the account. |
| Active CFD trader comparing costs | Neither automatically | The lower advertised spread may not produce the lower total cost. Compare the spread, commission, overnight funding, conversion charges, and dealing frequency. |
The biggest difference: investing versus leveraged trading
XTB and IG are often placed in the same comparison because both provide access to CFDs and financial markets. Their practical emphasis is different.
XTB has a stronger retail-investing feel. In the markets where its investment service is available, clients can use it to buy shares and ETFs as well as trade leveraged products. Fractional investing may also be available, although fractional rights are not identical to owning a whole share and the precise legal treatment depends on the local entity.
#1 Best Overall
IG is more strongly associated with active trading. Its range commonly includes CFDs on forex, indices, commodities, shares, ETFs, cryptocurrencies, and other products. In the UK, it also offers spread betting and separate investment services. The exact selection is not universal: an IG account in one country should not be assumed to provide the same markets as an IG account elsewhere.
Both brokers present CFDs as leveraged products. A CFD does not give you ownership of the underlying share, index, or commodity. A small deposit controls a larger position, which magnifies both gains and losses. For a long-term investor, a non-leveraged share or ETF account is usually a fundamentally different product from a CFD account, even when both appear in the same app.
Availability depends on your country
Before comparing spreads or platforms, check whether the broker accepts residents of your country and which company will be your contracting entity.
IG operates through different regulated companies in different jurisdictions. XTB does the same. The local entity determines matters such as:

- tax documents and reporting obligations.
For example, a UK resident may be able to use an IG spread-betting account, while a client elsewhere may only receive CFDs. An XTB client in one European country may see different investment products, fees, or currency options from a client in another. A comparison based on a US, UK, or European website may therefore be irrelevant to you.
Markets and product choice
IG: broader for multi-asset traders
IG’s main advantage is breadth. Depending on the jurisdiction, clients may find:
- forex;
- stock and index CFDs;
- commodities and precious metals;
- cryptocurrency products;
- ETFs;
- options;
- interest-rate and bond-related products;
- spread betting in the UK and certain other markets;
- shares and investment accounts.
That breadth is useful if you want to trade several asset classes from one account. It can also make IG feel more complicated, particularly when the same market is available as a CFD, spread bet, option, or non-leveraged investment.
XTB: strong combination of investing and CFDs
XTB generally offers forex, indices, commodities, shares, ETFs, and cryptocurrencies through its local product range. Its investing service is a key point of differentiation from brokers that focus mainly on CFDs.

Do not assume that every symbol in the XTB app represents a real asset. A company may appear as both a real share and a share CFD, with different ownership rights, costs, and risk. Check the product label before placing an order.
Fees: how to compare the real cost
Comparing a single “spread from” figure is not enough. The relevant calculation is:
Total cost = spread + commission + overnight funding + currency conversion + account or withdrawal charges
CFD and forex costs
For a short-term CFD trade, the spread is normally the first cost. Some instruments or account types may also carry a commission, particularly share CFDs. Holding a leveraged position beyond the broker’s daily funding time can create a separate overnight charge or credit.

IG publishes instrument-specific spreads and may use different pricing schedules for standard, direct-market-access, share, or professional products. XTB also publishes product-specific spreads and commissions, and the applicable charge can differ between CFDs and real shares or ETFs.
Ask these questions before deciding:
- What is the typical, rather than minimum, spread during the hours you trade?
- Is commission charged on opening, closing, or both sides?
- What is the overnight financing formula?
- Are there wider spreads around market open, close, news, or rollover?
- Will your account balance be converted when you trade or withdraw?
Shares and ETFs
XTB may be attractive for smaller investors because it has offered commission-free share and ETF dealing in some markets up to a monthly trading threshold. That does not mean the transaction is costless. Currency conversion, exchange charges, taxes, and other local costs can still apply. The threshold and pricing must be checked on the current local fee schedule.
IG’s investment-account pricing can include dealing commissions, minimum charges, custody fees, or foreign-exchange costs, depending on the market and account type. IG can still be competitive for particular exchanges or frequent traders, but it should not be judged by its CFD spread table alone.
A practical test is to price the exact transaction you expect to make. For example, compare the cost of buying £2,000 of a US ETF, holding it for a year, and selling it. Include the purchase commission, sale commission, custody charge, US-dollar conversion, and any tax or exchange levy. The cheaper CFD spread is irrelevant to that calculation because a CFD is not the same investment.

Platforms and usability
XTB xStation
XTB’s xStation platform is available through web and mobile interfaces. Its design generally suits users who want watchlists, market news, an economic calendar, educational material, charts, and order entry in one place.
It is particularly convenient for someone moving between investing and trading. The trade-off is that users who rely on a specific third-party platform or a large ecosystem of automated-trading tools may find it less flexible than a broker with broader platform integrations.
IG platforms
IG offers its proprietary web platform and mobile app, with additional platform support varying by location and product. Its own platform is built around a broad instrument catalogue and includes advanced charting, alerts, watchlists, risk-management orders, and position management.
IG’s platform choice can be an advantage for traders who already use MetaTrader or want specialist charting tools. Availability should be confirmed on the local IG website: a platform shown on an international page may not be available to every client.
For both brokers, test a demo account before depositing money. Specifically check how easily you can:
- find the correct version of an instrument;
- set a stop-loss and guaranteed stop, if offered;
- see the estimated margin and funding cost;
- download transaction history;
- change the account base currency;
- close a position during a fast-moving market.
Leverage, protection, and account structure
Retail leverage is normally restricted by local regulation. The maximum may also vary by instrument: major currency pairs often receive more favourable margin treatment than individual shares, cryptocurrencies, or exotic currency pairs.
Both XTB and IG may offer protections such as negative-balance protection to eligible retail clients in regulated jurisdictions. This should not be confused with protection against losses on a trade. A stop-loss can be affected by slippage or market gaps, and a position can still lose the money committed to it.
Professional-client status can change leverage and protections. Applying for professional classification may remove some retail safeguards, so it should not be treated as a routine upgrade.

Which broker is better for beginners?
XTB is usually easier to approach if your main goal is buying shares and ETFs while occasionally exploring markets. The single xStation environment, educational content, and straightforward layout reduce the number of separate decisions a new investor must make.
IG may be better for a beginner who specifically wants to learn active trading across several markets, provided that the trader starts with a demo account and understands leverage. IG’s extensive product range is useful, but it also increases the risk of choosing the wrong instrument or overlooking funding charges.
Neither broker is automatically suitable for a beginner who has not built an emergency fund or who is considering leveraged trading with money needed for bills. CFDs and spread bets are high-risk products, and most retail accounts lose money when trading them.
Which is better for long-term investing?
XTB has the clearer advantage when it provides the investment products you need at competitive total cost. It may suit an investor building a portfolio of shares or ETFs with regular contributions, especially where fractional investing is available and there is no custody fee under the applicable terms.
IG can be preferable if you want a broader investment service, a particular stock exchange, an ISA or pension wrapper where available, or a single provider for both investing and active trading. These account types are country-specific, so verify that the product is available before opening an account.
For long-term investing, compare the fund’s ongoing charge, dealing costs, foreign-exchange fee, custody fee, tax wrapper, dividend treatment, and transfer-out process. Broker brand recognition is less important than those details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which is better for active trading?
IG is generally the stronger choice for traders who need a wide market selection, spread betting, specialist tools, or established multi-asset infrastructure. XTB can be a good alternative for traders who value a simpler platform and whose preferred instruments have competitive spreads and funding rates.
Use a cost spreadsheet rather than relying on marketing claims. Record the average spread you observe on a demo or small live account, the commission on your usual position size, and the financing charge for the typical holding period. A broker with a wider spread can still be cheaper if it charges less funding or no commission on your particular product.

FAQ
Is XTB cheaper than IG?
It depends on the product and your location. XTB may be cheaper for certain share and ETF transactions, while IG may be competitive for particular CFDs, spread bets, or active-trading products. Compare the complete cost, including spread, commission, currency conversion, custody, and overnight funding.
Is IG safer than XTB?
Neither brand is universally safer. Safety depends on the regulated legal entity serving you, the protections available in your country, and how much money you deposit. Check the regulator, compensation scheme, negative-balance terms, and client-money arrangements in the account documents.
Can I buy real shares with XTB and IG?
Both brokers offer investment products in some jurisdictions, but availability differs. Confirm that the order ticket says share or ETF investment rather than CFD, and check whether fractional ownership, dividends, voting rights, custody, and transfer-out are supported.
Which broker is better for forex?
IG is often the stronger fit for traders wanting broader market access and more specialist tools. XTB can be suitable if its spreads, funding rates, and platform meet your requirements. Compare typical spreads during your trading hours rather than minimum advertised spreads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes XTB offer spread betting?
XTB’s product range is jurisdiction-specific and is generally associated with CFDs and investment products rather than being a direct spread-betting alternative. UK residents should check the current XTB UK account range. IG is the more established spread-betting choice in the UK.
Can I use MetaTrader with XTB or IG?
Platform availability changes by entity and account type. XTB primarily promotes its xStation platform, while IG may provide MetaTrader or other integrations in selected regions. Confirm the current platform list for your country before opening an account.
The Bottom Line
Choose XTB if you want a modern, relatively straightforward platform and your priority is investing in shares and ETFs alongside occasional trading. Choose IG if you want the broader multi-asset ecosystem, UK spread betting, or more advanced trading tools.
Do not choose on headline spreads alone. First confirm the local legal entity, then compare the exact instrument, position size, funding period, currency, and account charges you will actually use. That process can reverse the result of a generic XTB-versus-IG ranking.
