X’s pay-per-use API pricing was announced as a way to make access more flexible and attract developers, but the available sources do not show that developers have returned as a result. The announcement was a closed-beta expansion in October 2025; X’s developer platform now documents a credit-based, usage-priced model with no fixed monthly cost. Your bill depends on which API resources your application uses and how often it uses them.

What changed—and when

On October 21, 2025, TechCrunch reported that X was expanding a closed beta of pay-per-use API access. The X Developers account, in a post dated October 20 and quoted by TechCrunch, said: “We are expanding a closed beta to both new & power users who want to ship amazing apps on X.” The report said selected users would receive a $500 voucher to build with the API. That voucher was part of the reported beta, not a general offer for all developers. TechCrunch’s October 2025 report

At the time, TechCrunch said it was unclear whether X would retire its older plan-based system. X’s current official pricing page now presents a credit-based pay-per-use model. The platform describes it as “Pay only for what you use,” product wording that explains the billing approach, not proof that it will cost every developer less. X Developer Platform pricing

“Attract developers back” describes the intended business effect, not a demonstrated result. The cited sources provide no before-and-after developer count or usage data establishing that the pricing change caused developers to return.

How much does the X API cost per use?

The following are rates displayed on X’s official pricing page as of October 5, 2026. X bills different resources and actions at different units, so these figures are not a single all-purpose API rate.

API resource or action Displayed price Billing unit
Posts: Read $0.005 Per resource
User: Read $0.010 Per resource
DM Event: Read $0.010 Per resource
Post: Create $0.015 Per request
Content: Create $0.010 Per request
Article: Draft $0.010 Per request
Article: Publish $0.010 Per request
Content: Create with URL $0.200 Per request
DM Interaction: Create $0.015 Per request
User Interaction: Create $0.015 Per request

The official developer overview separately lists reads of a user’s own posts, bookmarks, followers, likes, and more at $0.001 per resource. It also describes API access to posts, users, Spaces, DMs, lists, and other endpoints. Check how the specific endpoint your application calls is classified rather than assuming every read uses the Posts: Read rate. X Developer Platform documentation overview

Rates can change. X says calculator estimates are informational and actual bills may differ because of taxes, fees, usage variations, rate changes, or other factors. Check the live price card and applicable terms before using these figures to budget. X Developer Platform pricing

How to estimate your own API bill

Start with the endpoints and actions your product actually needs. Count each billed resource or request over a representative period, then multiply each count by its applicable rate. Add the results across resource types to form a usage estimate; account separately for taxes, fees, and any other factors X identifies as affecting the final bill.

  1. List the calls: identify reads, post creation, content creation, interactions, and any other endpoint actions your application will use.
  2. Find the billing unit and rate: use the current official price card and endpoint documentation to distinguish charges per resource from charges per request.
  3. Forecast realistic volume: estimate typical usage and a higher-activity period. For variable workloads, include how much usage could rise during a spike.
  4. Multiply and add: calculate each call type separately, then total the estimates. Recheck the official calculator and price card before committing to a budget.
  5. Review access constraints: check current endpoint-specific rate limits, access scope, and terms for the endpoints the product depends on.

Is pay-per-use cheaper than a plan?

There is no universal answer: cost depends on total volume and the mix of billed endpoints. A developer with intermittent or low usage may value a model without a fixed monthly fee, while high or hard-to-predict usage can make a metered bill variable. That is a budgeting trade-off, not evidence of savings; compare a workload estimate against any alternative available to your account.

A November 22, 2025 TechRadar Pro opinion article by Dario Betti, CEO of the Mobile Ecosystem Forum, estimated that a workload comparable to the then-$200-per-month Basic plan—roughly 15,000 reads and 50,000 writes—would cost about $575 per month using the estimator at that time. This was a dated third-party calculation for that stated workload, not an official current quote or a forecast for every API user. Betti also argued that granular controls could help unusual or spiky workloads, while cautioning that metered billing would not necessarily be cheaper. TechRadar Pro’s November 2025 analysis

What to weigh before building on the API

  • Endpoint mix and volume: resource and request rates differ, so an estimate needs to reflect the product’s actual calls.
  • Usage variability: consumption pricing may suit workloads that fluctuate, but a spike can raise spend when billing follows use.
  • Limits and access: X advertises fewer tier restrictions and less restrictive per-endpoint limits; verify current limits for the endpoints and access scope your application needs in the official documentation.
  • Budget predictability: no fixed monthly cost does not mean a fixed or automatically low bill. Set an internal usage budget and monitor consumption if the product can generate substantial or unpredictable traffic.
  • Rate stability and policy: if your product depends on continued API access, assess published prices and terms before committing. Betti’s 2025 commentary raised rate stability and clarity as issues to watch; it is not an official commitment about future rates.

Can new accounts get free credits?

The current documentation says new pay-per-use accounts can earn up to $70 in X API credits: $20 for saving a first payment card and a match of the first auto-recharge up to $50. This is separate from the $500 voucher reported for selected participants in the October 2025 closed-beta expansion. Check the current documentation for eligibility and terms before relying on the credit offer. X Developer Platform documentation overview
