The $1.34 billion figure is a dollar value of stablecoin tokens tracked on the XRP Ledger. It is not a measure of how much XRP people need. On the ledger, XRP is consumed in two protocol roles, a small transaction cost and account reserves, and neither role can be calculated from a stablecoin total. The total does not show how many accounts exist, how many ledger objects they own, or whether anyone else is paying their costs.
What the $1.34 billion figure actually measures
The headline number is rounded. A DefiLlama XRPL dashboard reading retrieved on 9 October 2026 showed about $1.319 billion in stablecoins on the chain, with RLUSD at about $1.228 billion, or 93.04% of the displayed total. That is a live tracker reading, not an audited total. Other trackers may count differently, and the same dashboard can show a different figure on a different day.
Ripple’s RLUSD transparency page, as of 24 September 2026, reported $2,409.0 million in circulating RLUSD and $2,531.5 million in reserve funds. Those numbers describe RLUSD as a whole, not the XRP Ledger alone, so they should not be substituted for the chain-level figure.
| Measure | What it counts | Source and date | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|
| XRPL stablecoin total | Stablecoin tokens the tracker attributes to the XRP Ledger | DefiLlama XRPL dashboard, retrieved 9 October 2026 | Approximate on-chain stablecoin value at one moment |
| RLUSD circulating supply | RLUSD in circulation across its issuance, not only XRPL | Ripple RLUSD transparency page, as of 24 September 2026 | Issuer-wide size of RLUSD |
| RLUSD reserve funds | Reserve funds reported by Ripple | Ripple RLUSD transparency page, as of 24 September 2026 | Comparing reserves with circulating RLUSD |
| XRP reserve and fee settings | XRP the ledger requires per account and per transaction | XRP Ledger documentation, Reserves and Transaction Cost pages, retrieved 9 October 2026 | Estimating the XRP an account must hold or spend |
Only the last row answers a question about XRP requirements, and it answers it per account, not in aggregate.

Where XRP is consumed on the ledger
The transaction cost
The minimum standard transaction cost is 10 drops, which is 0.00001 XRP. The XRP Ledger documentation states: “The transaction cost is not paid to any party: the XRP is irrevocably destroyed.” The cost can rise when the network is under heavy load, and some transaction types carry different costs. A single standard transaction therefore uses a trivial amount of XRP, and the fee is not a payment to an issuer, exchange or market maker.
The base reserve and the owner reserve
A reserve is XRP that an account must hold to exist and to own ledger objects. It is not a fee. The XRP Ledger documentation explains the purpose: “The XRP Ledger applies reserve requirements, in XRP, to protect the shared global ledger from growing excessively large as the result of spam or malicious usage.” On Mainnet, the documented settings are a 1 XRP base reserve plus 0.2 XRP for each owned object. The reserve remains the account holder’s own XRP, locked against the ledger requirement while the objects exist.

The 2024 change to reserve settings
The current values replaced older ones. The XRP Ledger Foundation reported that the new settings took effect on 2 December 2024, and the base transaction cost stayed at 10 drops.
| Setting | Current documented value | Before 2 December 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Base reserve | 1 XRP | 10 XRP |
| Owner reserve per ledger object | 0.2 XRP | 2 XRP |
| Standard transaction cost | 10 drops (0.00001 XRP) | 10 drops (0.00001 XRP) |
Fee voting by validators can change these settings, so a figure written today may not hold later. Check the current documentation or query the network before relying on any number.

Why a stablecoin dollar value cannot be turned into XRP needs
A stablecoin on XRPL is an issued token. Holders depend on the issuer’s promise to redeem it for an outside asset, and they hold it through a trust line. A trust line is a ledger object, so it raises the holder’s owner reserve. The XRP cost of holding stablecoins therefore depends on how many objects each account owns, not on how many dollars it holds.
Consider three hypothetical accounts, using the current settings and ignoring fees:

- Account A holds $500 of RLUSD through one trust line and no other objects. Its requirement is 1 XRP base plus 0.2 XRP for one object, or 1.2 XRP.
- Account B holds $500,000 of RLUSD through one trust line and no other objects. Its requirement is still 1.2 XRP.
- Account C holds $500 of stablecoins spread across ten ledger objects. Its requirement is 1 XRP plus 2 XRP, or 3 XRP.
Account B holds four hundred times the dollar value of Account A and needs the same XRP. Account C holds the least value of the three and needs the most. A dollar total cannot reveal this pattern.
Turnover is also invisible. Each standard transaction costs a fraction of a drop-scale amount of XRP, but the total does not say how many transactions occur, how many accounts are active, or how many tokens move between holders. Issuer, exchange and market-maker XRP balances tied to stablecoin operations are likewise not part of the stablecoin total, and the sources reviewed do not establish an aggregate XRP balance attributable to stablecoin activity.

Sponsorship changes who pays
XRPL allows one account to sponsor another, covering transaction fees or reserve requirements for the sponsored account. The XRP Ledger documentation notes that sponsorship does not move XRP into the sponsored user’s wallet. For the costs it covers, a sponsored user may need no XRP of their own, while the sponsor carries the cost. Counting XRP needs from user accounts alone can therefore miss who actually funds them.
What the figure cannot tell you
- How many XRP each stablecoin holder owns, or how many holders exist.
- Whether holders fund their own reserves and fees, or are sponsored.
- How often stablecoins change hands, which drives the number of fees paid.
- How much XRP issuers, exchanges, market makers or sponsors hold in connection with stablecoin operations.
- Whether growth in stablecoin value raises XRP’s price. The official documentation describes how the ledger works but does not show a causal effect on price. The question “Does XRPL adoption actually create XRP demand?” is one readers ask in public discussion, not a finding established by these sources.
How to estimate one account’s XRP requirement
- Confirm the current settings. Use the XRP Ledger documentation’s Reserves and Transaction Cost pages, or request
server_infofrom a node, which reports the validated ledger’s base and per-object reserve values. - Get the account’s owner count. Request
account_infofor the address; the response includesOwnerCount. - Calculate the reserve: base reserve plus owner count multiplied by the per-object reserve. With current settings, that is 1 XRP plus 0.2 XRP per object.
- Add expected fees: number of transactions multiplied by the applicable transaction cost. For standard transactions, that is 0.00001 XRP each, before any load-related increase.
- Check for sponsorship. If another account covers some of these costs, subtract them from the account’s own requirement, and confirm the arrangement on the sponsored account’s records.
- Recheck when settings change, since validator fee voting can alter the values.
This method gives an account-level answer. Repeating it for every account would still require a complete account census, which no public stablecoin total provides.
