XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, a network designed around payments, token transfers and cross-currency settlement. Bitcoin was proposed as peer-to-peer electronic cash and relies on proof-of-work mining. Ethereum is a programmable blockchain secured by proof-of-stake, with ETH used by validators who stake it. Those differences affect how each system works and what risks users take; they do not establish which asset is a better investment.

What are XRP, Bitcoin and Ethereum for?

It helps to separate a network from its native asset. The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is the network; XRP is its native digital asset. Bitcoin is both the name commonly used for the network and its native asset, BTC. Ethereum is the network, while ether (ETH) is its native asset.

Network and asset Design emphasis What the native asset does in the described design
Bitcoin (BTC) Peer-to-peer electronic cash and transaction settlement without a financial institution acting as trusted intermediary. This is the purpose set out in Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin whitepaper. Mining rewards and transaction fees are part of the whitepaper’s incentive model for supporting the network.
Ethereum (ETH) A general-purpose programmable blockchain for applications and smart contracts, secured by proof-of-stake. Validators stake ETH to participate in securing the network.
XRP Ledger (XRP) A payment- and settlement-oriented ledger that supports transfers and cross-currency payments. XRP can serve as a bridge asset between currencies and is used to pay XRPL transaction fees. The 2026 SEC-filed report says the full XRP supply was created at launch, transaction fees are burned, and validators do not receive a block reward.

The table describes design emphases, not everything people may do with the assets. In particular, XRP’s proposed bridge role should not be confused with proof that it is routinely used for large volumes of payments.

How do their consensus systems differ?

Consensus is how network participants agree on which transactions belong in the ledger and in what order. These three designs rely on different security assumptions and incentives.

Bitcoin: proof-of-work mining

Bitcoin miners expend computational work to help timestamp transactions into a chain. The whitepaper describes accumulated work as a way to address transaction ordering and double-spending. Its security model assumes that most CPU power is controlled by participants who are not cooperating to attack the network. The paper also describes new coins and transaction fees as incentives for miners to support it.

This design makes computational work and the incentives to continue mining central to Bitcoin’s security. It does not mean transactions are instantaneous, cost-free or immune to risk.

Ethereum: proof-of-stake validation

Ethereum replaces mining with validators who stake ETH, check proposed blocks, and may propose or attest to blocks. Ethereum’s official proof-of-stake guide says some or all of a validator’s staked ETH can be destroyed for specified dishonest actions. Staking therefore ties participation to ETH at risk and to the validator’s duties.

For solo validation, Ethereum’s guide specifies a 32 ETH deposit and operation of execution, consensus and validator-client software. That is the solo-validator route, not a requirement for everyone who holds ETH; pooled staking is another route and introduces provider and counterparty considerations.

XRP Ledger: validator consensus

XRPL servers use trusted validator lists, known as Unique Node Lists (UNLs), selected by network participants. Servers compare proposals and work toward agreement on a ledger version. XRPL’s consensus documentation says a version is treated as validated and final after successful agreement. XRP is not staked to validate the ledger.

The XRPL documentation describes a specific liveness and safety trade-off: it says consensus can continue unimpeded if fewer than 20% of trusted validators are faulty; if more than 20% but less than 80% are faulty, the network stops making progress; and confirming an invalid transaction would require more than 80% of trusted validators to collude. These thresholds are claims in the network’s documentation, not an independent audit of every validator configuration.

  • Enhanced Backup Solution: Multi-share Backup eliminates single points of failure for secure cold wallet recovery

That design makes validator selection and trust assumptions important to assessing XRPL resilience. It avoids proof-of-work mining, but the relevant question is not simply whether the network is “centralized” or “trustless”; it is how its validator lists are configured and how participants rely on them.

Does XRPL’s settlement speed mean an international payment takes seconds?

XRPL documentation describes near-real-time ledger settlement in three to six seconds and says the ledger contains a decentralized exchange that can use available trade orders to bridge currencies. That is a description of settlement on the ledger. It is not a guarantee that an end-to-end international payment—including fiat payment rails, exchange access, liquidity and any intermediaries—will be completed in that interval. Nor is it a like-for-like comparison with Bitcoin or Ethereum finality: the systems use different consensus designs and the cited material does not provide a harmonized comparison of finality definitions.

How much evidence is there of XRP payment and application use?

There is a difference between a network’s intended use and evidence that people or organizations use it at scale. A 2026 SEC-filed XRP product disclosure reports that more than 100 financial institutions had signed up to use the XRP Network as of December 31, 2025. A signup count does not establish that each institution actively uses XRP for settlement, or reveal transaction volumes.

The same disclosure reports approximately 50 deployed and active XRP Network dApps as of September 30, 2025, citing DappRadar, and more than 150 monthly active developers, citing the Electric Capital Developer Report. These are figures as reported in that filing; the underlying datasets are not independently verified here. The disclosure characterizes XRPL’s application ecosystem as expanding but comparatively smaller than general-purpose smart-contract networks.

Separately, the 2026 SEC-filed report assesses XRP use in retail, commercial and payment settings as limited relative to speculative activity, and says speculators represent a significant portion of users. That assessment matters when distinguishing the bridge-asset use case from observed adoption: a technical capability or institutional signup is not, on its own, evidence of broad payment use.

What risks should someone comparing the three consider?

Technical design is only one part of risk. The relevant exposure also depends on whether someone is holding an asset, operating a validator, using an application or relying on a service. None of these networks removes the possibility of loss.

  • Consensus and network resilience: Bitcoin’s security model depends on computational work and mining incentives; Ethereum’s on stake and validator duties; XRPL’s on agreement among participant-selected trusted validators. Each system has different assumptions and failure modes, rather than a single risk-free form of consensus.
  • Applications and services: Ethereum’s smart-contract and application scope makes contract and application risk relevant in addition to the risks of holding ETH. A flaw or exploit in an application is a different risk from failure of the base network’s consensus. Using exchanges, custodians or staking providers adds service and counterparty risks.
  • Adoption and market volatility: The 2026 SEC-filed report warns that a lack of XRP adoption or a contraction in use could adversely affect its value. This is an attributed risk disclosure, not a price forecast. Digital-asset prices can fluctuate, and a network’s intended function does not guarantee demand for its asset.
  • Custody and key management: Losing recovery material, signing a malicious transaction, falling for phishing, sending to the wrong address or suffering software compromise can result in losses. A hardware wallet may support self-custody, but it cannot prevent those mistakes or protect an asset from a price decline.
  • Long-term cryptographic change: The SEC-filed report identifies the possibility that future advances in quantum computing could undermine cryptographic algorithms. It describes any transition as requiring coordination across the ecosystem; this is a contingent, long-horizon concern, not a prediction of imminent failure.

What does the end of the SEC–Ripple appeals establish?

The SEC-filed XRP Trust annual report says the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York entered final judgment on August 7, 2024, imposing a $125 million civil penalty and enjoining Ripple Labs from future unregistered institutional XRP sales. The report says both sides dropped their appeals in August 2025, leaving the district court rulings intact.

This describes the status reported in that filing. It is not a blanket determination that every XRP transaction has the same legal classification. The separate SEC-filed XRP product disclosure cautions that courts have expressed inconsistent analyses and that an asset’s status may depend on the circumstances of a transaction and the jurisdiction. Legal treatment can change as cases, regulations and facts differ.

How to use the comparison

Start with the activity you are evaluating, not a presumed winner. Someone considering a payment network should distinguish ledger settlement from the full payment path. Someone considering validation should understand the relevant mining, staking or trusted-validator assumptions. Someone using an application should assess that application and any service involved, separately from the base network. And someone considering holding an asset should treat adoption, custody, legal uncertainty and volatility as distinct risks—not infer investment safety or likely returns from technical design alone.
