Re:

Xiaomi Begins Mass-Producing Its Own Flagship Processor—but Not Its Own Chips From End to End

Xiaomi’s XRING O1 marks a major step in its in-house chip effort, but designing a processor is not the same as owning the factory or entire supply chain.

Yes: Xiaomi began mass-producing its self-developed XRING O1 flagship processor in May 2025. The chip first appeared in the Xiaomi 15S Pro and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra, launched for mainland China. But “making its own processor” means Xiaomi designed the system-on-chip; it does not establish that Xiaomi owns the factory that fabricated it or controls every supplier in its production chain.

What Xiaomi announced

Lei Jun said mass production of the XRING O1 had begun in May 2025. Xiaomi formally unveiled it on May 22, describing it as its first self-developed flagship processor. The first products with the chip were the Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra tablet. Xiaomi’s announcement and a Reuters report carried by Investing.com establish the launch and mass-production claims.

This is a significant expansion of Xiaomi’s in-house silicon program, not the start of its chip work. Xiaomi previously launched the Surge S1, a 28nm mobile processor, in the Mi 5C in 2017. XRING O1 is the first flagship-class processor of Xiaomi’s renewed effort to reach mass production. Reuters’ background report traces that earlier chip and the program’s return.

What “its own processor” means—and what it does not

A smartphone processor passes through several stages, often involving different companies. Xiaomi can own the chip’s system design and product integration without owning the facilities or technology used at every other stage.

  1. Architecture and intellectual property: A chip can combine licensed designs and technologies with a company’s own engineering. “Self-developed” does not mean every processor core or instruction was invented from scratch.
  2. Chip design: Xiaomi develops the SoC’s overall configuration and integration, along with work such as software support, imaging, power management and tuning for its devices.
  3. Wafer fabrication: A foundry turns a chip design into silicon. Xiaomi’s announcement says XRING O1 entered mass production, but it does not say Xiaomi owns or operates the fabrication plant.
  4. Packaging and testing: Chips are packaged and validated before device assembly; these can be separate parts of the supply chain.
  5. Device integration: Xiaomi installs the processor in phones, tablets or other products and coordinates it with their software and components.

The evidence supports calling XRING O1 a Xiaomi-designed or self-developed processor that entered mass production. It does not support saying Xiaomi fabricated the wafers in its own factory, or that the chip is independent of external suppliers.

XRING O1 specifications and what the numbers show

Xiaomi’s launch materials describe XRING O1 as a second-generation 3nm chip with 19 billion transistors. The company lists a 10-core CPU, a 16-core Immortalis-G925 GPU, a six-core neural processing unit (NPU) rated at 44 TOPS, and a fourth-generation image signal processor (ISP). These specifications are Xiaomi’s stated figures, not independent measurements. Xiaomi’s product announcement is the source for them.

The “3nm” label refers to a manufacturing-process generation; on its own, it does not prove a particular performance or efficiency advantage over every other chip carrying a similar label. Likewise, Xiaomi’s launch material cited an AnTuTu score of about 3 million for the Xiaomi 15S Pro. Treat that as a company-reported benchmark result, not a universal score or an independently controlled comparison with other processors.

These headline specifications do not answer every practical question. A meaningful assessment also needs independent comparisons of sustained performance, heat, battery life, connectivity, software compatibility and production scale. The supplied launch information does not establish those results or identify XRING O1’s modem configuration.

How much Xiaomi has invested

Xiaomi said it had invested about RMB13.5 billion in chip development to date and planned to invest at least RMB50 billion in chip design over at least ten years. Those are different figures: the first is reported spending to date; the second is a forward-looking commitment, not money already spent or a stated budget for building a chip factory. Xiaomi also said its chip-development team had more than 2,500 engineers. Xiaomi’s announcement and Reuters’ report carried by Investing.com provide the figures. Reuters converted the RMB13.5 billion figure to about US$1.87 billion using the exchange rate at the time of its May 2025 report; that dollar equivalent is date-specific.

The XRING O1 launch prices are figures reported by Xiaomi for mainland China in 2025, not current prices or U.S. prices. Xiaomi introduced the Pad 7S Pro 12.5 later, describing it as a flagship tablet powered by its self-developed 3nm processor; its launch announcement gives the model and listed prices. Xiaomi’s XRING announcement covers the first two products and the T1. The initial XRING O1 devices were mainland-China launches; the available information here does not establish current official availability in the United States or other regions. Xiaomi notes that product availability and features vary by region in its global product information and HyperOS information.

Why Xiaomi wants to design processors

An in-house application processor gives Xiaomi more influence over how hardware and software are developed together. It can tailor imaging, AI functions, power management and HyperOS integration to its products, and potentially exercise more control over product timing and features. Over time, a proprietary chip could also improve supply resilience, bargaining power or costs.

Those are strategic possibilities, not proof that Xiaomi has already replaced outside suppliers or reduced costs. The company continued to launch devices using Qualcomm Snapdragon and MediaTek platforms after XRING O1’s debut. One chip in a limited set of products does not establish a broad shift in Xiaomi’s processor purchasing, much less an immediate threat to Qualcomm or MediaTek.

What Xiaomi still depends on

Design control is not the same as end-to-end semiconductor independence. A chip program can still rely on external suppliers and technologies for architecture or processor IP, electronic design automation (EDA) software, wafer fabrication, memory, modems, radio-frequency components, packaging and testing. Xiaomi’s public announcement identifies XRING O1 as self-developed but does not establish Xiaomi ownership of the manufacturing process or factory.

This distinction also matters when placing the chip in China’s broader semiconductor push. Developing proprietary silicon can reduce reliance on external chip designers, but it does not by itself eliminate exposure to global suppliers or semiconductor tools. Nothing in Xiaomi’s announcement establishes that XRING O1 is free of foreign technology or made entirely in China.

What would show whether XRING becomes a durable success?

Shipping a processor is an important milestone; its longer-term importance depends on more than specifications announced at launch. The most useful indicators are:

  • Performance and efficiency: Independent CPU, GPU, AI and imaging comparisons, plus battery life, heat and sustained performance under comparable conditions.
  • Connectivity: The modem arrangement and its effect on coverage, power use and device design.
  • Software maturity: Driver quality, game compatibility, camera tuning and support across HyperOS and Android updates.
  • Supply and yields: Whether Xiaomi can make enough chips reliably for products at meaningful scale.
  • Economics: Whether the benefits justify research, design and production costs, rather than simply shifting the bill among suppliers.
  • Continuity and reach: Whether Xiaomi produces successors, expands XRING into more products and markets, and uses it alongside—not merely in place of—third-party processors.

The first generation establishes that Xiaomi can bring a flagship-class SoC to commercial devices. It does not yet settle these questions about performance, economics, availability or the durability of the roadmap.
