Xbox Series X|S Sales: What the Numbers Actually Reveal

The latest reported estimate puts combined Xbox Series X|S sales below 30 million through November 2024, but it is an inference—not a Microsoft tally. The often-cited Series S lead comes from a dated 2022 snapshot.

Microsoft has not published a current worldwide lifetime sales total for Xbox Series X|S in the sources available here. The latest reported estimate puts combined sales below 30 million through November 2024, but that figure is a third-party inference—not an official Microsoft tally. The best-known comparison between Series S and Series X is older still: a leaked 2022 ownership snapshot, not a current global sales count.

How many Xbox Series X and S consoles have sold?

There is no definitive current worldwide unit total established by the available sources. In February 2025, Pure Xbox reported an estimate of fewer than 30 million combined Series X|S units through November 2024. The estimate was derived by comparing Take-Two’s figure for combined current-generation console sales with Sony’s disclosed PS5 sales figure; it was not a number reported directly by Microsoft or Take-Two as Xbox sales.

That distinction matters: the calculation gives an inferred combined figure for the Xbox family, not separate Series S and Series X totals. It also has a November 2024 cutoff, so it should not be treated as a current 2026 count or extrapolated forward as though sales continued at a known rate. Pure Xbox’s estimate and its basis are the source for that reported figure.

Did the Xbox Series S outsell the Series X?

The clearest commonly cited model split comes from a leaked Microsoft document described by Windows Central in 2023. The document showed that, among Xbox Series owners in its 2022 snapshot, 74.8% had a Series S and 25.1% had a Series X. Those percentages indicate ownership distribution at that point, not a current worldwide cumulative sales tally.

In September 2023, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella cautioned that the leaked percentages represented an earlier period. He said Series S accounted for a little more than half of US Xbox Series owners lifetime-to-date at the time of his comment. That is a US-focused ownership share, not a global unit count, and it does not establish the models’ current split. Windows Central’s coverage of the leaked snapshot and Piscatella’s caveat explains both figures.

Why the figures do not produce a current sales winner

  • They cover different dates: the model percentages describe a 2022 snapshot, Piscatella’s public qualification dates to September 2023, and the combined estimate runs through November 2024.
  • They use different geographies: Piscatella’s lifetime-to-date comparison is US-focused; the Take-Two-derived estimate is for combined current-generation console sales and does not provide a region-specific Xbox count.
  • They measure different things: an ownership share between two models is not an exact number of units sold, while the combined estimate is inferred from broader market figures.

Microsoft’s FTC filing describes the Series X and Series S as two consoles released in 2020, with the Series X positioned as faster and more powerful and the Series S as simpler and more affordable. It establishes the family and its positioning, but does not supply a lifetime sales total. Microsoft’s FTC filing is the primary source for that product context.

What can be stated with confidence

The reported evidence supports a limited conclusion: an older leaked snapshot favored Series S ownership, and an analyst later described Series S as a little over half of US owners lifetime-to-date in 2023. A separate media-reported inference put combined Series X|S units below 30 million through November 2024. None of these figures establishes an exact current worldwide total or a current global Series S-versus-Series X winner.
