Xbox console prices rose again on August 1, 2026, and Sony has already raised recommended PS5 prices, including a global increase that took effect April 2, 2026. Those are announced prices; what you’ll pay at a retailer can differ by location, stock and seller. Analysts’ estimates for the PS6 are forecasts, not confirmed prices.

What changed, and when?

Microsoft announced its latest cited Xbox console price update on June 25, 2026, with new prices effective worldwide August 1. It raised prices by US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models, and said its 2 TB model would be sunset. Microsoft’s announcement is at Xbox Wire.

This followed a second U.S. increase in 2025. Reuters reported that after the October 3, 2025 change, the 1 TB Xbox Series S cost about $450, Xbox Series X about $650, and the 2 TB Galaxy Black Series X nearly $800. Those are reported U.S. prices from that 2025 change, not a current worldwide price list. Reuters’ report also quoted an analyst who attributed that particular increase to tariffs and supply-chain pressures.

Sony has also increased PS5 prices. Its latest cited global set of recommended prices took effect April 2, 2026. The U.S., U.K., European and Japanese prices Sony listed were:

PS5 Pro $899.99 £789.99 €899.99 ¥137,980

These are Sony’s recommended prices, effective April 2, 2026, in the listed markets—not guaranteed retailer prices or a complete schedule for every territory. Check Sony or local sellers for current availability and prices. Sony’s 2026 announcement lists the regional recommendations.

How much is an Xbox Series X now?

The cited Microsoft announcement gives the 2026 increases by storage tier, not a full price list with each model’s new price. It does not establish a live retailer price for Xbox Series X. The specific figures reported by Reuters—about $650 for Xbox Series X and nearly $800 for the 2 TB Galaxy Black model—followed the October 2025 U.S. increase and should not be presented as the current price after the 2026 update.

To compare a listing fairly, check the exact Series X model and storage, your country and currency, whether the amount is a manufacturer recommendation or seller price, and the date. A retailer’s price may vary from the recommended price; the available announcements do not establish current stock or live seller pricing.

Why did Xbox prices go up?

Microsoft said in its June 2026 announcement that storage and memory costs had risen more than 2.5 times, and that it expected another doubling by fall 2027. Those figures are Microsoft’s claims, not independent measurements. The company also said consoles are typically sold below their manufacturing cost. Its stated rationale is that higher component costs made a price increase necessary.

That explanation is distinct from the interpretation of the earlier 2025 U.S. increase. Reuters quoted NYU Stern games professor Joost van Dreunen saying that increase reflected tariff increases and supply-chain costs rather than opportunism or software-development costs. That is an analyst’s assessment of the 2025 change, not Microsoft’s official explanation for the 2026 update. Reuters’ coverage provides the attribution.

Did Sony raise PS5 prices too?

Yes. Sony raised U.S. recommended prices in August 2025 to $549.99 for PS5, $499.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $749.99 for PS5 Pro, effective August 21. It had also announced increases in selected European, Australian and New Zealand markets in April 2025. Sony then announced the additional global set effective April 2, 2026, shown above. Sony’s August 2025 U.S. announcement gives the earlier U.S. prices; the later figures are in its 2026 announcement.

In a June 5, 2026 investor-meeting Q&A summary, Sony said it was not realistic to absorb all component-cost increases and that it had already implemented some increases outside Japan. It also said sales were proceeding as planned and that it did not believe the increases had reduced customer demand. Those are Sony’s statements, not independent measures of demand. The same summary says Sony does not intend, as a principle, to sell hardware at significant losses while it monitors the market and evaluates its approach. Sony’s investor Q&A summary contains the remarks.

Will the PS6 cost $1,000?

There is no confirmed PS6 price in the cited evidence. GamesRadar+ reported that NYU’s Joost van Dreunen forecast a next-generation starting price 50% above the current generation’s launch price, while Kantan Games CEO Serkan Toto said a $999 PS6 variant was possible. Both are analyst projections, not Sony guidance or announced prices. GamesRadar+ also reported Circana analyst Mat Piscatella describing a Sony price move as a larger jump than he had anticipated and saying PS6 timing and pricing remained uncertain. GamesRadar+’s report provides the forecasts and attribution.

A 50% projection and a possible $999 model are not equivalent claims: one describes a forecasted increase relative to a launch price, while the other is a possibility for a particular variant. Neither should be treated as an expected checkout price. The cited evidence does not establish announced launch prices for either the PS6 or a next-generation Xbox.

How to read console price announcements

  • Separate recommendation from checkout price. Manufacturer recommended retail prices are not live retailer listings.
  • Match model and storage. The Xbox update differs by storage tier; PS5, Digital Edition and Pro have separate recommendations.
  • Match geography and date. A U.S. price from 2025 is not directly comparable to a 2026 U.K. price or a future-generation forecast.
  • Distinguish attribution. Company statements explain what manufacturers say about costs and demand; analyst comments are interpretations or predictions.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
