Xbox Game Pass Ultimate did not get another U.S. price hike in 2026: Microsoft cut its monthly price from $29.99 to $22.99 on April 21. But subscribers are facing a different trade-off: starting in November 2026, Xbox has announced monthly cloud-gaming hour limits, and new Call of Duty games will no longer arrive on day one. Whether Ultimate is still worth paying for depends on which features you use.
What changed in the U.S. price and what did not
On April 21, 2026, Xbox reduced the U.S. monthly price of Game Pass Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99. PC Game Pass also fell, from $16.49 to $13.99 per month. Those are U.S. prices, not a worldwide price schedule; Xbox’s live Microsoft Store listing showed Ultimate at $22.99 per month when checked October 8, 2026. Xbox’s April announcement and the U.S. Microsoft Store listing establish the current U.S. figures.
The reduction did not restore every benefit. Xbox said future Call of Duty releases would join Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season, about a year after release, rather than on launch day. Call of Duty games already in the catalog were to remain available. The Store listing described Ultimate as including day-one games and more than 300 console and PC games, but that broad description does not mean every major release arrives on day one.
Cloud gaming limits are the next change
On September 3, 2026, Xbox announced monthly cloud-gaming allowances beginning in November 2026. The announced limits are 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. Before the change, eligible subscribers could stream without these monthly hour limits. Xbox said subscribers would be able to purchase additional hours through the Xbox Store, but its announcement did not provide prices, purchase options, or all market-availability details. Check Xbox’s September cloud-gaming announcement for any updates before relying on those details.

Xbox estimated that the limit change would affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers; that is Xbox’s estimate, not an independently verified measurement. The company also acknowledged the trade-off: “We recognize that introducing limits is a meaningful change, particularly for players who regularly spend more time gaming through the cloud.” Xbox Wire’s report of the announcement quoted the company’s statement.
How to decide whether Ultimate still fits
Do not judge the subscription on price alone. Start with the features you actually use, then compare the current plan names and inclusions on Xbox’s live Game Pass page. An Xbox guide from September 2024 described PC Game Pass as oriented toward PC play, Core around console multiplayer and a select library, Standard around a larger console catalog, and Ultimate as the broadest cross-device package. Those plan structures have since changed, so that older guide is useful only as a set of decision factors, not as a current plan chart: Xbox’s September 2024 guide.

- Where you play: Check whether you need console access, PC access, or both.
- Online console multiplayer: If you play multiplayer on console, verify which current plan includes the access you need.
- Catalog and launch timing: Consider how much you use the library and whether day-one access matters. Future Call of Duty games are the specific exception announced for Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
- Cloud gaming: Estimate your typical monthly streaming time. The announced Ultimate allowance is 15 hours starting in November 2026; if you regularly exceed it, wait for the additional-hours pricing and availability details before assessing the real cost.
- Included extras: Count only benefits you would otherwise pay for or use; a bundle is not automatically better value because it includes more features.
If you mainly play on PC, compare the current PC Game Pass offer with Ultimate rather than paying for console or cloud features you do not use. If you depend on cloud gaming for long sessions, the hour cap may matter more than the lower monthly fee. If you switch among devices and value a broad catalog, Ultimate’s mix may still justify its price—but verify current inclusions in your country before subscribing.

The title refers to an earlier increase, but the available official information here does not establish its original announcement, exact effective date, or any grandfathering rules. The verified U.S. price history is that Ultimate was $29.99 before Xbox’s April 21, 2026 reduction to $22.99. That later change does not establish the details of the earlier increase, and U.S. pricing should not be applied to other regions.
