A deleted LinkedIn post from Xbox Game Studios Publishing executive producer Matt Turnbull suggested that people affected by Microsoft’s 2025 layoffs use ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot for career planning, résumé writing, networking and emotional clarity. The post was documented by a screenshot and reported after it disappeared, but it was not an official Microsoft employee-support program.
Turnbull published the post on July 4, 2025, shortly after reporting that Microsoft was cutting approximately 9,000 jobs—about 4% of its workforce. Xbox and game-development operations received especially intense attention amid studio closures, cancellations and job cuts. The timing also coincided with Microsoft’s highly visible investment in artificial intelligence.

That combination made the advice unusually controversial. Critics saw a corporate AI product being presented as a way to manage the emotional consequences of corporate layoffs. The criticism does not establish that AI caused every job cut, or that Microsoft formally told laid-off workers to use Copilot. It concerns the symbolism and framing of a personal post from an employed Xbox executive.
What Matt Turnbull suggested
According to Aftermath’s archived screenshot and transcription, Turnbull recommended prompts and exercises involving:

- Rewriting résumé bullets around measurable impact.
- A LinkedIn “About” section.
- Messages to former colleagues and prospective contacts.
- A prompt addressing imposter syndrome after a layoff.
The post referred to using large-language-model tools including ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot to reduce the “emotional and cognitive load” of job loss and help people become “unstuck” with more calm and clarity. It was later deleted. The available evidence supports saying that the post was real, documented and independently reported—not that it remains available on LinkedIn or represented Microsoft policy.
Why the post triggered backlash
The corporate irony
Copilot is Microsoft’s own AI product. Suggesting it soon after a major round of Microsoft layoffs created an obvious perception problem: workers could interpret the message as being told to use the company’s AI to process the consequences of decisions made by the company.
That is an interpretation of the timing, not proof that Turnbull claimed AI replaced the affected workers. Contemporary coverage from Tech Times and The Outpost described the backlash in the context of Microsoft’s broader AI push.

Grief was framed as a productivity problem
Job loss can involve lost income, health-insurance concerns, uncertainty about housing and benefits, anger, grief and a damaged sense of professional identity. Describing AI as a way to reduce the emotional and cognitive load may sound as if those consequences are merely workflow obstacles to optimize.

The power imbalance mattered
Advice from an employed executive lands differently from advice exchanged between peers who have just lost their jobs. The point is not to speculate about Turnbull’s motives. It is that the speaker’s position, the company’s role and the timing shaped how readers understood the message.
AI was already part of the labor debate
Game workers were already debating AI’s possible effects on writing, art, coding, voice work and production. That made an AI-based response to layoffs particularly sensitive in an industry where workers were questioning how automation might change their jobs.
What AI can reasonably do after a layoff
AI can reduce clerical friction. It cannot remove the financial or emotional consequences of unemployment.
Bounded uses can include:
- Turning a broad job-search goal into a weekly checklist.
- Identifying transferable skills and possible role categories.
- Rewriting a résumé for clarity while preserving your actual experience.
- Comparing a job description with your résumé.
- Drafting several versions of a networking message.
- Practicing interview questions.
- Creating an application tracker or a list of questions for a human career counselor.
Use AI as a drafting and organizing assistant, not as an authority. Models can invent metrics, exaggerate responsibilities, misunderstand industry terminology and produce generic applications. Every résumé claim should be traceable to something you actually did. Salary information, benefits rules, immigration questions, unemployment eligibility, severance rights and noncompete issues require verification from official agencies or qualified professionals.

What AI should not replace
A chatbot is not a licensed therapist, legal adviser, benefits counselor, severance negotiator or crisis service. It can produce supportive-sounding language, but it has no lived experience, professional accountability or human judgment. It can also hallucinate, mirror a user’s assumptions or offer false reassurance.
Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman has publicly discussed a vision of Copilot as a more emotionally intelligent companion or life adviser, as reported by Fortune. That helps explain why someone might view Copilot as useful for emotional reflection. It does not make Copilot a clinically validated treatment or justify treating a deleted personal post as an official mental-health recommendation.
Someone experiencing a mental-health crisis should contact emergency services, a crisis line or a qualified mental-health professional rather than rely on a chatbot.

Do not paste a complete termination agreement, medical record, confidential work file or unreleased game material into a chatbot merely to get a summary. Also remove names, addresses, phone numbers, account numbers, private contact details and identifying medical information.

Use placeholders such as “[former employer]” and “[project]” where possible. Review the privacy and data-control settings for the specific service and account. A consumer chatbot, workplace account and enterprise deployment can have different retention and protection rules. Policies and settings can change; users should not assume that everything is private or that every service uses data in the same way.
OpenAI’s current ChatGPT plans page lists a free individual tier alongside paid individual and business options, with plan and privacy distinctions. Microsoft’s enterprise Copilot page says eligible users with qualifying Microsoft 365 subscriptions may have Copilot Chat at no additional cost, while Microsoft 365 Copilot is listed at $30 per user per month when paid yearly and requires a separate qualifying Microsoft 365 license. Prices and eligibility can vary by market and checkout conditions. A person facing unemployment should not buy a subscription simply because an executive mentioned it.
A safer three-question test
- Is the task clerical or emotional? AI is more appropriate for formatting, brainstorming and tracking than for grief, trauma or crisis.
- Can you independently check the result? Verify résumé claims, job requirements, compensation, legal guidance and benefits information.
- Would disclosure cause harm if exposed? If yes, anonymize the material or do not upload it.
Human alternatives may be more valuable
For many laid-off workers, the strongest help will come from former colleagues, mentors, professional associations, labor groups, portfolio reviewers and trusted references. Public libraries, workforce-development offices, state unemployment agencies, benefits counselors, community mental-health services and support groups may provide assistance without requiring an AI subscription.

A human who understands production, narrative, live operations or publishing may identify a credible career pivot that a model misses through superficial keyword matching.
LinkedIn’s Premium Career page promotes job-seeker features and says eligible members may receive a free trial, but eligibility and pricing vary. Paying for visibility does not guarantee interviews or employment.
The bottom line
Turnbull’s post was not simply controversial because it mentioned AI. The deeper problem was the blurring of two very different ideas: using software to organize the mechanics of a job search, and using a corporate chatbot to cope with the human fallout of mass layoffs. AI may help with a résumé, checklist or interview rehearsal. It is not a substitute for severance, benefits guidance, trusted relationships, therapy or humane employer responsibility.
