Microsoft’s Xbox division announced 268 role eliminations on September 22, 2026, affecting Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. Xbox said the move advanced a restructuring announced in July, but it did not publish a cumulative Xbox-only job-loss total or a studio-by-studio breakdown.
What Xbox announced on September 22
Matt Booty’s employee update said Xbox was eliminating 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and the Xbox Game Studios management and central-functions layer. The company did not say how many of the 268 roles came from any individual studio. Xbox’s announcement described the action as part of a broader restructuring that had been underway since July.
Xbox said actions completed since July, including studio divestitures, brought the earlier restructuring roughly three-quarters of the way through. That is the company’s progress estimate, not a final count of jobs cut.
How the studio and publishing structure is changing
The September update described a plan to run fewer business units, align groups that already work closely together, and concentrate publishing expertise. The announced reporting and development changes include:

- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Activision: Its remit would expand to include Rare and World’s Edge. Activision would also develop the next Halo title with a purpose-built team separate from ongoing Call of Duty development. A smaller Halo Studios team would continue supporting the Halo community and games already in market.
- Bethesda: Obsidian would join its remit. Xbox said Obsidian would continue current projects, including Grounded and a new Fallout project made with Bethesda Game Studios.
- King: Microsoft Casual Games would join its remit.
- Playground Games and Turn 10: The studios would come together as one focused on Forza and Fable.
These are organizational changes; they do not, by themselves, establish that a studio has closed or that a specific game has been cancelled.
Studio ownership changes and consultations are separate from the 268 cuts
The same update covered ownership changes and possible studio outcomes. Those should not be counted as confirmed job eliminations unless Xbox says so:

- Undead Labs transitioned on similar terms and, with a new publisher, was to release State of Decay 3 day one on Game Pass.
- After two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through, Xbox said it would begin employee consultation on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other options. A proposed closure is not a confirmed closure.
- Consultation with Arkane remained underway and was expected to continue through the end of 2026. The update did not announce that Arkane had closed.
Why the July Microsoft-wide figure is not an Xbox layoff total
On July 6, Xbox framed the reset as a change to its content portfolio, platform, and operating model, including fewer management layers, consolidated work, and a shift in investment toward higher-priority projects. The July statement said changes varied across Activision, Bethesda/ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, Mojang, and Xbox Game Studios, and that no publicly announced first-party games or projects were being cancelled as part of those July reductions. September’s 268-role announcement was described as part of that ongoing reset.
Microsoft’s July 6 company-wide statement reported around 4,800 role eliminations, about 2.1% of its global workforce, with that day’s changes mostly in Commercial and Xbox. Those figures apply to Microsoft overall, not just its gaming division. The September announcement did not provide a reconciled cumulative Xbox-specific total through October 8, 2026.

What can—and cannot—be concluded from the figures
| Figure or status | What it describes |
|---|---|
| 268 roles | Xbox’s September 22, 2026 reduction across the organizational categories it named; no studio-by-studio allocation was provided. |
| Roughly three-quarters | Xbox’s estimate on September 22 of progress through the earlier restructuring, including actions completed since July and studio divestitures. |
| Around 4,800 roles; about 2.1% | Microsoft’s July 6, 2026 company-wide announcement, not an Xbox-only count. |
| Ninja Theory and Arkane | Consultation or exploration was reported in September; neither outcome was announced as a completed studio closure. |
Xbox’s July reset statement also said that in a typical year it lost 64 cents for every dollar invested. That is the company’s own description of its business, not an independently audited measure established by the cited statements.
