xAI’s CFO Mike Liberatore left in 2025 amid a wave of executive departures

Mike Liberatore’s 2025 departure was only the first xAI CFO exit. Anthony Armstrong, appointed in October 2025, left in April 2026 amid broader executive turnover and a changing SpaceX-linked finance structure.

Mike Liberatore was the xAI executive whose departure prompted the September 2025 headline. He joined Elon Musk’s artificial-intelligence company as chief financial officer in April 2025 and left around the end of July, after roughly three months. The story is no longer the latest CFO update: Anthony Armstrong, who succeeded him, also left xAI in April 2026. The changes occurred while xAI was raising billions, expanding data-center capacity and reorganizing with SpaceX.

Who was Mike Liberatore?

Liberatore, a former Airbnb executive, became xAI’s CFO in April 2025. Reporting by TechCrunch and Bloomberg put his departure around the end of July 2025. That made his tenure only about three months.

His remit included fundraising and parts of xAI’s data-center expansion in the Memphis area. A CFO at a rapidly scaling AI company typically coordinates capital raising, financial controls and infrastructure spending; xAI was handling all three at once.

Why his exit mattered

Two reported $5 billion financings

Contemporaneous coverage described a planned $5 billion debt raise and a separate $5 billion equity raise. Almost half of the equity was reportedly supplied by SpaceX, according to coverage summarized by TechCrunch and a Wall Street Journal public document. The reports do not establish that Liberatore personally originated or completed every transaction.

Infrastructure expansion

xAI was also expanding computing infrastructure around Memphis. The combination of fundraising and data-center construction made finance leadership strategically important, so a very short CFO tenure raised questions about continuity even though the reporting did not identify a definitive reason for his departure.

The other 2025 departures

The CFO change came amid several senior exits reported in July and August 2025:

  • Robert Keele, xAI’s general counsel, announced his departure in August after slightly more than a year.
  • Raghu Rao, a senior lawyer responsible for commercial legal matters, also left around that period.
  • Igor Babuschkin, an xAI co-founder, announced plans to start an AI-safety-focused venture-capital firm.
  • Linda Yaccarino, the former CEO of X, resigned in July. TechCrunch reported concerns about Grok’s behavior as context around the timing, but that reporting does not prove those concerns caused her resignation.

These people held different jobs across xAI and X. Their departures should therefore be treated as a series of separately reported events, not evidence that every executive left for the same reason.

What happened after Liberatore?

Anthony Armstrong became CFO, then left

Anthony Armstrong was appointed xAI CFO in October 2025. He had previously been a Morgan Stanley banker and advised Musk during the acquisition of X. Reuters, in a report republished by Investing.com, said Armstrong departed in April 2026. The Information’s organizational coverage also lists him as leaving that month.

That means xAI’s finance leadership changed twice in less than a year: Liberatore left around July 2025, and Armstrong left in April 2026. The cited reports do not name a successor or establish a confirmed reason for Armstrong’s departure.

How the SpaceX relationship changed the CFO job

xAI’s corporate structure became harder to describe after its combination with SpaceX. SpaceX’s leadership page lists Bret Johnsen as CFO. The Information reported that Johnsen became finance chief of the combined organization and that Armstrong reported to him after the reorganization, rather than operating as an entirely independent finance chief.

This distinction matters when reading headlines. “xAI CFO” referred to a standalone-company role in 2025; after the reorganization, finance responsibilities could sit within a broader Musk-controlled structure. X, the social-media business, xAI and SpaceX are related but are not interchangeable entities, and an executive’s role in one does not automatically describe a role in the others.

What is known about the reasons?

Public reporting does not establish one definitive cause for the departures. Possible explanations include rapid scaling, demanding fundraising, infrastructure build-out and the redefinition of senior jobs during the SpaceX integration. Those are organizational circumstances, not proof of internal dysfunction, financial distress, disagreements with Musk or problems with Grok.

The safest conclusion is narrower: repeated changes in finance, legal and founding leadership create a management-continuity question for a company undertaking large capital raises and complex infrastructure projects.

Timeline of xAI’s finance leadership and related exits

Date Event What the reporting establishes
April 2025 Mike Liberatore joins xAI Appointed CFO; former Airbnb executive.
End of July 2025 Liberatore leaves Reported departure after roughly three months.
August 2025 Additional senior exits Robert Keele and Igor Babuschkin announce departures; Raghu Rao also leaves around this period.
October 2025 Anthony Armstrong becomes CFO Reportedly takes over xAI’s finance role.
April 2026 Armstrong leaves xAI Reuters and The Information report his departure.
Post-reorganization Bret Johnsen oversees combined-company finance SpaceX lists Johnsen as CFO; The Information says Armstrong reported to him after the restructuring.

What readers should take from the story

The original September 3, 2025 headline accurately described Liberatore’s short tenure at that moment, but “latest” is now stale. As of August 18, 2026, the better-supported account is that xAI lost two finance chiefs during a period of aggressive fundraising, Memphis-area infrastructure expansion, executive turnover and integration with SpaceX. The departures signal organizational change and raise continuity questions, but the available reporting does not by itself show that xAI is failing or explain why each executive left.
