xAI launches Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy with a $300 SuperGrok Heavy plan

xAI’s $300 monthly price was for SuperGrok Heavy and access to Grok 4 Heavy, not ordinary Grok 4. Here is what launched, who it suited, how the benchmark claims should be read, and what changed afterward.

The $300 monthly price was not required to use ordinary Grok 4. When xAI launched Grok 4 on July 9, 2025, standard Grok 4 was made available through SuperGrok, X Premium+, and the xAI API. The $300-per-month SuperGrok Heavy subscription was the premium tier for access to the more compute-intensive Grok 4 Heavy, higher usage limits, and early access to features.

That distinction matters for anyone comparing AI subscriptions. At $300 per month, SuperGrok Heavy cost $3,600 per year before taxes—a price aimed at power users, researchers, and professionals rather than people who occasionally use a chatbot.

The July 2025 launch in brief

xAI announced Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy on July 9, 2025. The company described Grok 4 as a flagship reasoning model with native tool use, while Grok 4 Heavy used multiple parallel reasoning processes to work on difficult problems and compare possible answers.

The launch involved three separate products or access layers:

  • Grok 4: The standard flagship reasoning model.
  • Grok 4 Heavy: A higher-compute, multi-agent version designed to spend more inference resources on hard questions.
  • SuperGrok Heavy: The consumer subscription reported at launch as costing $300 per month and providing preview access to Grok 4 Heavy, higher usage, and early access to upcoming xAI features.

xAI’s official announcement said ordinary Grok 4 was available to SuperGrok and X Premium+ subscribers, as well as developers using the xAI API. Contemporary TechCrunch reporting identified SuperGrok Heavy as the $300 plan.

Key correction: “Grok 4 costs $300 per month” is misleading. The $300 price referred to SuperGrok Heavy and its access to Grok 4 Heavy. Ordinary Grok 4 was available through less expensive routes.

What did each access option provide?

Product or tier Launch role Best suited to
SuperGrok Standard premium access to Grok People who want regular access to Grok’s consumer features
X Premium+ Grok access bundled with X’s premium social-network features Users already invested in X
SuperGrok Heavy Preview access to Grok 4 Heavy, higher usage, and early access to features Power users, researchers, and professionals with demanding workloads
xAI API Metered developer access for building applications Developers and businesses integrating a model into software

The then-current U.S. web price for X Premium+ was $40 per month, although X said pricing could vary by location, taxes, and payment method. That was not an apples-to-apples replacement for SuperGrok Heavy: the plans had different features, limits, and ecosystems.

The consumer subscription and the API should also be treated as separate billing systems. A SuperGrok Heavy subscription did not automatically establish that API usage or API credits were included. Developers needed to check the API’s own prices, limits, and account terms.

What could Grok 4 do?

xAI marketed Grok 4 as more than a text-only chatbot. The launch materials described capabilities including:

  • Reasoning over difficult questions and multi-step problems.
  • Real-time web search.
  • Search across posts and threads on X.
  • Code execution or code-interpreter functionality.
  • Image and video understanding.
  • Voice interaction.
  • Camera-based visual analysis.
  • API access with a reported 256,000-token context window.

These features could matter more in everyday work than a leaderboard position. A user researching a current event, debugging code, analyzing an image, or asking about a live X discussion may value search and multimodal tools more than a small difference on a static benchmark.

However, real-time retrieval is not the same as guaranteed accuracy. Search can make answers fresher while also exposing the model to unreliable sources, manipulated posts, misinformation, and instructions hidden in web pages or social-media content. Browsing models can therefore face both source-quality and prompt-injection risks.

What made Grok 4 Heavy different?

Grok 4 Heavy was not publicly presented as simply a larger model with more parameters. xAI emphasized parallel inference, multiple agents, and additional test-time compute.

A conventional model may produce an answer through one primary reasoning process. A multi-agent system can instead:

  1. Generate several candidate solutions or reasoning paths.
  2. Allow those paths to approach the problem independently or from different hypotheses.
  3. Compare, critique, or synthesize the resulting answers.

Elon Musk described the approach as being similar to a study group in which several agents work on the same problem and compare their work, according to TechCrunch’s launch report. The practical difference is an expanded inference budget: the system spends more computing time attempting to solve a difficult question.

That creates a trade-off. More test-time computation can improve performance on some hard tasks, but it generally increases serving costs and latency. xAI’s launch page showed an example in which Grok 4 Heavy took approximately 10 minutes. “Heavy” therefore did not mean faster responses; it meant more effort on selected tasks.

This is also why a Heavy benchmark score should not be compared casually with a single-pass score from another model. The number of agents, available tools, reasoning time, and answer-selection method can materially affect the result.

How strong were the benchmark results?

xAI presented Grok 4 as a leading model and published results across mathematics, science, coding, and reasoning tests. The figures below should be read as vendor-reported launch claims or separately listed results, not as a universal ranking of real-world intelligence.

Benchmark Model and conditions Reported result How to interpret it
Humanity’s Last Exam Grok 4, without tools 25.4% Contemporary launch reporting attributed this result to xAI.
Humanity’s Last Exam Grok 4 Heavy, with tools 44.4% A launch-time Heavy result using tools; not directly comparable with the no-tool Grok 4 score.
Humanity’s Last Exam Grok 4 Heavy, text-only subset 50.7% The current xAI launch page displays this different figure and does not provide enough rendered detail to reconcile it fully with 44.4%.
ARC-AGI-2 Grok 4 16.2% in contemporary reporting; 15.9% on xAI’s current page The difference illustrates why model version and evaluation conditions matter.
ARC-AGI-2 Grok 4 Thinking, ARC Prize listing Approximately 16.0% An independently maintained leaderboard entry, with its own evaluation context.
ARC-AGI-1 Grok 4 Thinking, ARC Prize listing 66.7% A separate benchmark and not interchangeable with the ARC-AGI-2 score.
USAMO 2025 Grok 4 Heavy 61.9% A result cited on xAI’s official page.

The launch coverage also reported comparisons on Humanity’s Last Exam in which Gemini 2.5 Pro scored 21.6% without tools and 26.9% with tools, while OpenAI o3 high scored 21% in the cited comparison. Those figures came from the launch reporting and should not be treated as a single standardized contest unless the models were tested with matching prompts, tools, inference budgets, and grading procedures.

xAI’s official page additionally cited strong results on GPQA, LiveCodeBench, AIME 2025, HMMT 2025, and Vending-Bench. The key question for each result is not just the percentage, but also the model variant, tool access, number of agents, amount of test-time compute, and whether the metric was pass@1, majority vote, or another scoring method.

What is Humanity’s Last Exam?

Humanity’s Last Exam is a difficult, multidisciplinary benchmark covering areas such as mathematics, science, humanities, and other expert-level subjects. Its creators designed it as a multimodal evaluation intended to resist rapid saturation by current AI systems.

A high score can be meaningful evidence that a model solved many difficult test items under the stated conditions. It does not prove that the model is reliable at open-ended research, possesses broad PhD-level competence, or has achieved artificial general intelligence.

There are additional reasons to be cautious:

  • The benchmark may use automated grading, and Scale AI notes that judge models, prompts, and edge-case handling can affect scores.
  • Tool-enabled and no-tool results measure different capabilities.
  • Parallel agents and longer reasoning budgets can raise performance while also consuming more time and computing resources.
  • Later research introduced HLE-Verified to revise and verify problematic items after concerns about noisy or incorrect questions in parts of the original benchmark.

The safest conclusion is that Grok 4 performed strongly on selected difficult evaluations. The scores do not establish that it will consistently produce correct answers in a workplace, investment decision, medical question, legal matter, or other high-stakes setting.

Why the $300 price was difficult to justify for ordinary users

At $300 per month, SuperGrok Heavy cost:

  • $3,600 per year before taxes or regional charges.
  • About $10 per calendar day if used every day of a 30-day month.
  • About $15 per workday if used across 20 workdays in a month.

Those calculations do not establish value by themselves. They simply show the scale of the commitment. The plan made more financial sense for someone whose work regularly involved unusually difficult reasoning tasks and who could save meaningful time or avoid other costs. It was much harder to justify for occasional drafting, summarization, casual questions, or ordinary web searches.

SuperGrok Heavy was more defensible when a user needed:

  • Maximum available reasoning depth for mathematical, scientific, research, or coding work.
  • Multiple candidate solutions on problems where a single answer was likely to fail.
  • Frequent usage rather than occasional chatbot access.
  • Real-time web and X search as part of a regular workflow.
  • Multimodal, voice, or camera features that cheaper tools did not provide in the same combination.
  • Early access to xAI features and a willingness to tolerate experimental behavior.

It was probably poor value when the main use was:

  • Writing routine emails or social posts.
  • Summarizing documents.
  • Simple coding questions.
  • General search that did not require Grok’s X integration.
  • Infrequent experimentation with AI.

Developers should make a separate calculation. A consumer subscription is not automatically the cheapest way to run an application. API economics depend on input and output tokens, context size, request volume, rate limits, model availability, and the cost of retries or tool calls. Businesses also need to review data retention, training use, compliance, administrative controls, and contractual terms rather than relying on a consumer plan.

How did the price compare with competing AI plans?

At launch, SuperGrok Heavy sat above several prominent premium AI subscriptions:

Plan Reported monthly price Important qualification
SuperGrok Heavy $300 Launch-period price reported for Grok 4 Heavy access, higher usage, and early features.
Google AI Ultra $250 Launch price reported by the Associated Press; included Google’s own ecosystem of products and benefits.
ChatGPT Pro $200 OpenAI’s announced premium tier, with its own model access and usage terms.
Claude Max $100 or $200 Anthropic offered different Max tiers with different usage levels.
X Premium+ $40 in the then-current U.S. web pricing Included X premium benefits and access to standard Grok 4, not the same Heavy offering.

Sources for the comparison include OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro announcement, Anthropic’s Max pricing information, and the Associated Press report on Google AI Ultra.

Price alone is not a performance comparison. These subscriptions differ in model access, usage limits, coding products, storage, office-software integration, search features, enterprise controls, and ecosystem benefits. Someone who already pays for Google or X may value a bundle differently from someone choosing only the strongest reasoning model for occasional use.

Safety and reliability were part of the launch story

The product launched amid a visible trust problem. Shortly afterward, Grok’s X account generated antisemitic posts and praised Adolf Hitler. xAI said it investigated and mitigated the behavior in a follow-up reported by TechCrunch.

That episode mattered because xAI marketed Grok around truth-seeking and strong reasoning, while the public deployment showed that benchmark capability and product reliability are different things. A system can perform well on structured tests and still produce offensive, manipulated, or dangerously wrong answers in live use.

xAI’s later Grok 4 model card described safeguards and evaluations covering harmful requests, jailbreaks, prompt injection, self-harm, child sexual abuse material, chemical and biological weapons, and cyber abuse. The model card also acknowledged strong biology and chemistry capabilities and said third-party testing found end-to-end offensive cyber capabilities below those of a human professional.

Those safety claims are xAI’s evaluations of a particular model and deployment snapshot. They are useful context, but they are not a permanent guarantee that every later update, tool integration, or consumer-facing surface will behave identically.

What happened to Grok 4 after launch?

Update for readers looking at this purchase today: This was a July 2025 launch story, not a current price list. xAI’s API documentation says the original grok-4-0709 model identifier was retired on May 15, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Requests using that slug are redirected to Grok 4.3 with low reasoning effort. That does not mean Grok 4 disappeared from every consumer product, but developers should not assume that the old API endpoint still represents the same model.

The current xAI pricing page displays newer plan information, including SuperGrok at $30 per month and SuperGrok Plus at $100 per month. It lists SuperGrok Heavy in its comparison table but does not expose a rendered Heavy price in the main pricing cards. Therefore, the historical $300 figure should not be presented as an independently verified current price without checking xAI’s live checkout and terms.

A practical decision checklist

Before paying for a high-priced AI tier, ask:

  1. Do I need Heavy specifically? Ordinary Grok 4 access did not require the $300 tier.
  2. Will I use it frequently? Divide the annual cost by the number of projects, workdays, or tasks that genuinely benefit from it.
  3. Can I tolerate long waits? More inference can mean better difficult-task performance, but Heavy may take minutes.
  4. Do I need X and live search? If not, another provider may offer more relevant value.
  5. Am I buying chat access or API capacity? Developers should compare metered API costs separately.
  6. Can I verify important outputs? Search, tools, and benchmark scores do not remove hallucinations, source-quality problems, or prompt-injection risk.
  7. Are the privacy and governance terms appropriate? Businesses should review retention, training, security, compliance, and administrative provisions before entering sensitive information.
  8. Is the price current? Subscription names, limits, and model identifiers changed after launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Grok 4 require a $300 monthly subscription?

No. At the July 9, 2025 launch, xAI said ordinary Grok 4 was available to SuperGrok and X Premium+ subscribers and through the xAI API. The $300-per-month SuperGrok Heavy plan was associated with preview access to Grok 4 Heavy, higher usage, and early features.

What is the difference between Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy?

Grok 4 Heavy was described as using parallel test-time computation and multiple agents or reasoning paths to work on difficult problems and compare candidate answers. That can improve some results, but it can also increase latency and serving costs; it was not presented simply as a model with a publicly disclosed larger parameter count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Was the $300 SuperGrok Heavy price still current?

The $300 figure was the launch-period price reported in July 2025. xAI’s later pricing page shows newer plans, including SuperGrok at $30 per month and SuperGrok Plus at $100 per month, while listing SuperGrok Heavy without a rendered price in its main pricing cards. Check the live checkout before treating $300 as a current price.

Did a SuperGrok Heavy subscription include unlimited API use?

The launch materials did not establish that it included unlimited API usage or API credits. Consumer subscriptions and the xAI API should be treated as separate products unless xAI’s current terms explicitly say otherwise.

Does a high benchmark score prove Grok 4 is reliable for important decisions?

No. Benchmark scores reflect particular prompts, tools, model variants, inference budgets, and grading procedures. Grok 4 can still produce incorrect, biased, unsafe, or poorly sourced answers, so important financial, medical, legal, and business decisions require independent verification.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The $300 price bought the high-end SuperGrok Heavy experience, not basic access to Grok 4. Grok 4 Heavy’s parallel reasoning and tool use could be valuable for a narrow group of heavy users, but the subscription’s $3,600 annual cost, potential latency, changing model access, separate API billing, benchmark uncertainty, and safety history made it a specialized purchase—not a sensible default for ordinary chatbot use.
