Igor Babuschkin, an xAI co-founder, said August 13, 2025, was his last day at the company. He said he planned to focus on building AI that is safe and beneficial to humanity, including by launching Babuschkin Ventures, a firm intended to support AI-safety work and invest in startups developing AI and agentic systems. That was an announced plan; available reporting does not establish that the firm had begun investing or disclose its fund size, backers, or portfolio. SiliconANGLE reported the announcement on August 13, 2025.

Who is Igor Babuschkin?

Babuschkin is a technical AI researcher and one of xAI’s founding members. Before helping start the company with Elon Musk and others in 2023, he worked at Google DeepMind and OpenAI, according to SiliconANGLE’s report. His background puts the move in the context of frontier-AI development, rather than a departure by a purely financial executive.

What happened, and what reason did he give?

Babuschkin announced that August 13, 2025, was his final day at xAI. He described leaving to pursue AI that is “safe and beneficial to humanity.” He also recounted a dinner with Max Tegmark, founder of the Future of Life Institute, where they discussed building safe AI systems and helping children flourish as users of those systems. That is Babuschkin’s public explanation; it does not establish that the dinner was the sole cause of his decision.

Musk publicly thanked Babuschkin for helping build xAI. The reported announcement does not document a firing, a specific disagreement with Musk, or a dispute over xAI’s products or management. SiliconANGLE covered both the announcement and Musk’s response.

What is Babuschkin Ventures?

Babuschkin described plans for his own venture-capital firm, Babuschkin Ventures. Its stated aims were to support AI safety and invest in startups developing AI and agentic systems that could advance humanity and help explore scientific questions. The announcement establishes an intended focus, not a verified operating fund.

What is reported What is not established in the available reporting
Planned name: Babuschkin Ventures Fund size, capital raised, or outside investors
Stated focus: AI safety and startups developing AI and agentic systems Portfolio, completed investments, or a first investment date
Described as a venture-capital firm Legal structure, fund domicile, launch date, or investment stages
Babuschkin said he intended to launch it Whether it would operate as a conventional fund, family office, incubator, or another structure

These distinctions matter: announcing a firm is not the same as closing a fund or making investments. The report also does not specify whether the firm would back technical alignment research, safety tools, policy work, or commercial AI companies.

What might an AI-safety investment focus include?

“AI safety” is not a single, precisely defined investment category. In the broader field, a safety-oriented investor might consider companies working on alignment and control, reliability testing, interpretability, monitoring, model evaluations and red-teaming, model and agent security, privacy-preserving systems, governance infrastructure, or safer deployment of autonomous agents. These are examples of possible areas in the sector, not confirmed Babuschkin Ventures investment priorities.

Venture capital can help commercial teams build products and tools, but it is not interchangeable with nonprofit research funding, public oversight, or safety work inside AI labs. Which role Babuschkin Ventures would take on cannot be determined from the announcement alone.

How does the move relate to xAI?

xAI began in 2023 with a stated ambition to develop advanced AI for humanity’s benefit. Babuschkin’s account of its early days described conversations with Musk about using powerful AI for good. His later decision to pursue safety-oriented investing therefore does not, by itself, prove that xAI abandoned safety or that he believed the company was unsafe.

The move does mark a change in institutional role: building an AI company is different from financing companies or tools intended to address AI risks. Babuschkin’s public explanation points toward that shift, but no direct evidence in the announcement identifies dissatisfaction with xAI as its cause.

Does this reflect a broader leadership pattern?

Later coverage reported additional departures from xAI, including co-founder Tony Wu in February 2026. Ars Technica reported on Wu’s departure and placed Babuschkin’s earlier exit in a wider discussion of founder turnover. That context may be relevant to readers following xAI, but it does not establish a single cause for the departures or support an exact count here.

In June 2026, The Guardian reported allegations in a lawsuit by a former xAI engineer concerning safety issues and Grok. Allegations in litigation are not findings of fact, and that later reporting does not connect those claims to Babuschkin’s 2025 decision. The timing and available accounts do not support treating Grok controversies as the reason he left.
