What the $44 billion figure meant
The figure referred to a valuation X was reportedly seeking in financing talks, according to Reuters via Investing.com, which summarized Bloomberg’s report on February 19, 2025. Reuters said the discussions were ongoing and their details could change. It should therefore be read as a proposed financing valuation, not a verified price from a completed transaction.
A company valuation and the amount of money it raises are different figures. A proposed $44 billion valuation does not mean X was receiving $44 billion in cash. Reporting summarized by The Information described a roughly $2 billion primary round; that amount referred to potential new capital, not the valuation. The sources do not establish that the proposed terms closed unchanged.
How the later funding reports fit in
Subsequent coverage added financing details without resolving whether the reports concerned one transaction or separate stages.

The Information’s summary does not establish that the possible debt repayment or secondary sale was completed.
- March 19, 2025: Fortune reported that X had raised close to $1 billion in new equity. Its report did not establish whether this was the same financing discussed in February or confirm that the final valuation was $44 billion. Fortune’s report also said Musk participated, according to some sources.
These figures describe different things: a proposed company valuation, a reported target for primary proceeds, a possible secondary sale, and a later report of equity raised. They should not be added together or treated as interchangeable without confirmed deal terms.
Why the comparison with Twitter’s purchase price needs care
The Irish Times reported that the proposed $44 billion valuation matched the price Elon Musk paid to acquire Twitter in 2022. That is a comparison of two reported valuation or transaction figures at different points in time—not evidence that X’s operating performance, finances, or market value remained unchanged. The Irish Times also reported that Fidelity had marked down the value of its stake by about 70% in December before the talks. That markdown applied to Fidelity’s investment and is not, by itself, a definitive valuation of the whole company.

What is and is not established
The February report establishes that financing discussions at the proposed valuation were reported; the later reports describe additional equity-raising activity. The available coverage does not establish the final closing date, complete investor list, exact final amount, final valuation basis, or whether the March report concerned the same round. It would be inaccurate to say that X definitively raised money at $44 billion on the basis of these reports alone.
