X closed its longtime headquarters at 1355 Market Street in San Francisco on September 13, 2024. After announcing the decision on August 5, CEO Linda Yaccarino told employees that the company’s primary Bay Area locations would be its San Jose office and a new engineering-focused shared space with xAI in Palo Alto. Some employees later transferred elsewhere or worked remotely. The closure was separate from Elon Musk’s announced plan to move X’s corporate headquarters to Austin, Texas.
What closed—and what did not
The closure concerned X’s longtime San Francisco headquarters at 1355 Market Street, in the Mid-Market area. The building had been closely associated with Twitter before the company was renamed X. X’s departure ended its use of that site as its principal San Francisco workplace; it does not, by itself, establish that every employee, operation, or legal connection in the city or California ended.
Reporting put X’s total lease obligation at roughly 800,000 square feet, with leases extending into 2026 and 2028. That is a reported real-estate commitment, not proof that all of that space remained occupied when the office closed. A company can stop using an office while still having lease obligations. The San Francisco Standard reported the lease details.
Timeline: announcement to closure
- July 16, 2024: Elon Musk publicly said X’s headquarters would move from San Francisco to Austin, according to contemporaneous reporting.
- August 5, 2024: CEO Linda Yaccarino told employees that the San Francisco office would close “over the next few weeks.”
- August 2024: X identified San Jose and Palo Alto as its primary Bay Area locations for staff affected by the change.
- August 29, 2024: Reports named September 13 as the planned closure date.
- September 13, 2024: The 1355 Market Street headquarters closed. A later court filing described employees as transferred to other locations or working remotely.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported the planned date, and CBS News covered the closure and its Twitter-era context. The timeline distinguishes the August announcement from the September closure: they were not the same event.

Where affected employees were expected to work
San Jose
X already had an office in San Jose, which Yaccarino’s memo named as one of the primary Bay Area destinations. A move there could mean a substantially different commute for employees who had worked in San Francisco; the announcement did not publish a count of affected employees or a universal relocation requirement.
Palo Alto
X said it would establish an engineering-focused shared space with xAI, Musk’s artificial-intelligence company. This was a planned Bay Area workplace, not a statement that Palo Alto would become X’s global headquarters.

Remote work and other transfers
The later court filing described former San Francisco office employees as having transferred to other locations or working remotely. It does not establish a complete final breakdown by destination, nor does the available reporting show that every affected employee was required to move to Texas. The filing in Lemon v. Musk also notes the transition-related address issue.
What X said about transportation—and what remained unclear
Yaccarino’s memo said leadership was working on transportation options for employees directly affected by the closure. That is evidence that transportation was under consideration, not confirmation of a specific benefit. The reporting did not establish a finalized shuttle service, commuter subsidy, relocation payment, or severance arrangement for all affected staff. Fortune reported the memo’s details.

How the San Francisco closure related to the Austin plan
The San Francisco workplace closure and the Texas headquarters plan were connected parts of a broader corporate shift, but they were distinct decisions. Yaccarino’s August memo described new primary locations in the Bay Area. Musk had separately announced that X’s headquarters would move from San Francisco to Austin. The Austin announcement did not mean that San Francisco-based employees were all sent to Texas, and the Bay Area offices were not described as X’s new global headquarters. The San Francisco Chronicle reported Musk’s Texas headquarters announcement.
The decision came amid Musk’s broader cost-cutting and restructuring after acquiring Twitter in October 2022, as well as his stated preference for Texas and criticism of California policies. Those factors provide context, but X’s closure announcement did not give a detailed operational explanation proving that any one factor caused the move.

Why the departure mattered to Mid-Market
Twitter’s presence at Market Square was part of an effort to bring technology employers into San Francisco’s Central Market corridor. In 2011, Twitter described its move to the neighborhood as a way to invest in San Francisco and the area around its offices. The company’s announcement set out that earlier vision.
X’s departure therefore had significance beyond one employer changing offices: it removed a highly visible technology tenant from a neighborhood associated with revitalization efforts. The closure also added to concerns about office vacancy and reduced weekday activity. Those are broader local concerns, not proof that X’s departure alone caused a particular economic loss. Its reported lease commitments also meant that ending day-to-day use and resolving the real-estate obligation were separate issues.

Did X eliminate every San Francisco connection?
The strongest supported description is that X closed its San Francisco headquarters. The later court filing said employees had moved to other locations or were working remotely, while noting that San Francisco could still appear as an official mailing address during the transition. A mailing or registration address is not the same as an operating headquarters, and its continued appearance does not establish that the Market Street office remained open. The available evidence does not establish that every California-based activity ended.
