Wrong UPI Transfer: What’s Verified About the Reported ₹7,001 Bank of India Refund Order

The reported Bank of India refund direction in Odisha remains unverified here. For a mistaken UPI transfer, prompt bank contact can start a recovery request, but refund depends on the recipient approving it.

The reported Odisha order directing a Bank of India branch to refund ₹7,001 could not be independently verified from the available sources. Its date, parties, reasoning and exact direction therefore remain unconfirmed. For someone who has sent money to the wrong UPI ID, the practical guidance is clearer: contact your bank promptly and ask it to seek recovery through the beneficiary’s bank, but understand that a mistaken, authorised payment is not automatically reversed.

What is known about the reported Odisha order?

The headline describes a consumer-commission direction to a Bank of India branch in Odisha concerning ₹7,001. The order itself or a reliable report identifying it was not available, so the amount and reported direction cannot be treated here as independently verified. No case number, decision date, parties, reasoning or operative remedy can be reliably stated.

That distinction matters: a reported direction to refund is not proof that the bank has already paid, nor does it establish the reasons the commission gave. The available information is not enough to say what the complainant did or which recovery route was used.

What should I do if I sent money to the wrong UPI ID?

Odisha Gramya Bank’s published UPI guidance says, “You have to contact the beneficiary through your Bank to get a refund.” It advises the sender to approach their own bank and request that the branch raise a chargeback with the beneficiary bank. The guidance says recovery depends on good faith and the beneficiary’s approval; it is not an automatic reversal or guaranteed refund. Read Odisha Gramya Bank’s UPI guidance.

  1. Contact your bank as soon as possible through an official channel and report that you authorised a payment but entered the wrong beneficiary details.
  2. Ask the bank to raise a chargeback or recovery request with the beneficiary bank. Keep the complaint or ticket number.
  3. Save the UPI reference, transaction date and amount, the recipient identifier shown in your app, the relevant bank-statement entry, and copies of messages or letters with the bank.
  4. Follow up in writing if you do not receive a clear response, and retain each response and acknowledgement.

The supporting guidance does not establish a fixed recovery deadline for a mistaken transfer. Bank of India’s surfaced refund-redressal page includes fields for a bank payment ID, payment type, amount, transaction date and debited account, but it is not established whether its current form accepts mistaken UPI transfers. Check Bank of India’s refund-redressal page and confirm the appropriate route with the bank.

Is a wrong-recipient transfer the same as a failed or unauthorised payment?

Situation What happened What the cited guidance says
Wrong recipient, authorised by you You approved the payment, but the beneficiary details were incorrect. Request bank-assisted recovery through the beneficiary bank. Recovery depends on the beneficiary approving the debit; the payment cannot simply be stopped. Odisha Gramya Bank UPI guidance.
Technical decline The payment failed technically; the issue is not that you chose the wrong recipient. Odisha Gramya Bank’s guidance describes return on T+1 after beneficiary-bank verification. That timing applies to the technical-decline scenario described there, not to recovery of a mistaken authorised payment. Odisha Gramya Bank UPI guidance.
Unauthorised transaction You say you did not approve the transaction. This is a different dispute category from an authorised payment sent to the wrong person. Report it to your bank as unauthorised and follow its complaint process; the available sources do not establish case-specific liability or an outcome for the Odisha report.

How is the separate Bank of India UPI case different?

Do not confuse the reported Odisha matter with Bank of India & Anr. v. Dauram Rathore & Anr., a separate case decided by the Chhattisgarh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission on 27 April 2023. The judgment described an initial BHIM UPI transfer of ₹7,840 and six later transfers totalling ₹1,19,250 after the complainant contacted a purported helpline and shared payment credentials. The State Commission set aside the District Commission’s relief, treating the credential sharing and subsequent authorised transfers as customer negligence on those facts; it held the cited zero-liability reasoning inapplicable there. Those facts do not establish what happened in Odisha, and the decision should not be generalised to a simple typing error or to every UPI dispute.

What if the bank does not resolve the complaint?

First keep the bank’s complaint acknowledgement, transaction details and written replies together. Bank of India’s Ombudsman page surfaced categories that include wrong billing or wrong debits and delay or failure to effect an online payment or fund transfer, but the current eligibility, prerequisite complaint steps, timelines and filing process need to be checked against the applicable RBI rules before relying on that route. See Bank of India’s Ombudsman information. The available material does not establish which escalation route the Odisha complainant used.
