If an incorrect EPF Member ID (MID) is linked to your UAN, you can request that EPFO delink it through the Member Interface. Whether the request can be filed—and whether it goes to your employer or the Regional Office—depends on contribution history and any pending or completed claim. Delinking is for a genuinely erroneous account link, not for erasing real employment history or withdrawing PF money.
What delinking does—and what it does not do
EPFO calls the correction delinking a wrong Member ID. Its 17 January 2025 circular established a member-initiated facility for an erroneous MID linked to a UAN without the member’s knowledge. EPFO later expanded the process for certain wrong MIDs that have received contributions.
Use this facility to challenge an account that is genuinely not yours or was linked to your UAN in error. It is not a way to remove a real employer from your service history, correct employment dates, transfer a legitimate former employer’s balance, or withdraw PF funds. EPFO’s 2025 circular describes the original purpose in its delinking circular.
Check whether your case can be filed
Before starting, check the wrong MID’s contribution history and whether a claim against it is pending or has already been processed or settled. EPFO’s 13 April 2026 circular sets out these routes:

#1 Best Overall
| Situation | What EPFO’s process provides |
|---|---|
| No contributions, and the portal permits a request | Submit a delinking request through the member account. Submission does not guarantee approval. See EPFO’s 17 January 2025 circular. |
| One or two contributions | Send the request through the portal. The employer can delink the MID if it accepts the request. See EPFO’s 13 April 2026 circular. |
| Employer refuses or does not act for two weeks, or the MID has more than two and up to six contributions | The request is escalated to the concerned Regional Office for examination; escalation is a review, not automatic approval. See the 2026 circular. |
| More than six contributions, or a claim is pending, processed, or settled | The circular says a delinking request cannot be filed for that MID through this facility. Contact EPFO for case-specific guidance. See the 2026 circular. |
The two-week period is the threshold for escalation after employer inaction, not a promised end-to-end completion time. The circular does not specify how long the full review takes.
How to submit a delinking request
- Open the official EPFO Member Interface and sign in using your own UAN, password, and captcha.
- Complete the OTP verification sent to the mobile number registered to your account.
- Locate the wrong Member ID in the portal’s delinking workflow, select it, and submit the request. Follow the confirmation prompts and current on-screen labels; the interface may change.
- Monitor your member account for the request’s status or any further action. The applicable route depends on the contribution and claim conditions above.
EPFO’s member manual describes signing in and OTP authentication. The 2026 circular governs the contribution-based handling described here.

What happens after submission
For eligible requests, the employer may accept and delink the MID when contributions have been received no more than twice. If the employer refuses or does not act for two weeks, or if the wrong MID has more than two and up to six contributions, EPFO’s process sends the case to the concerned Regional Office for examination.
The Regional Office review described in the 2026 circular involves a Dealing Hand (Compliance), Section Supervisor (Compliance), and RPFC (Compliance). The RPFC decides on the merits, approves or rejects the request, and records reasons. This is an examination, not an assurance that a disputed MID will be removed.

EPFO says separate instructions would follow on transferring a balance associated with a delinked MID to SRF. The circular does not establish that a balance will automatically transfer or be refunded when an MID is delinked.

If the portal will not accept the request—for example, because a claim is pending or the MID falls outside the stated contribution limits—contact EPFO for guidance rather than trying to bypass the restriction. The Member Interface lists the EPFO helpdesk at 14470.
