Wrench Acquires Lemon Squad to Add Used-Car Inspections to Its Mobile Auto Services

Wrench announced on September 15, 2020, that it had acquired Lemon Squad, a provider of mobile pre-purchase vehicle inspections. The deal connected Wrench’s mobile maintenance and repair services with inspections intended to help consumers and fleet operators assess a vehicle before buying it. The companies did not disclose the acquisition price or transaction terms in the announcement.

Why Wrench acquired Lemon Squad

Wrench’s existing service focused on maintenance and repairs delivered to customers. Lemon Squad added a different point in the vehicle ownership process: an inspector could travel to a used vehicle before a purchase and provide an assessment. In its September 15, 2020 announcement, Wrench presented the acquisition as a way to connect pre-purchase inspections with services customers might need after buying a vehicle.

Wrench co-founder and CEO Ed Petersen said the company could offer on-site pre-purchase inspections alongside mobile maintenance and repair, helping customers make a more informed decision “from the start.” He also described the inspection as fitting Wrench’s mission of reducing the hassles of vehicle ownership. These were statements of the company’s rationale, not independent findings about inspection outcomes.

What the acquisition announcement said

Wrench said Lemon Squad CEO Andy Dabbs would become general manager of inspections, and that Lemon Squad’s network of 2,800 inspectors would join Wrench’s extended team. The 2,800 figure is the company’s reported network size in 2020, not a verified current count.

The release said customers and fleet operators would be able to schedule on-site inspections through the Wrench mobile app, while customers could continue to contact Lemon Squad directly. It described a report arriving within 24–48 hours. That interval reflects the 2020 announcement and should not be treated as a current turnaround promise.

Contemporaneous GeekWire coverage quoted Petersen saying that a trusted inspection by a certified mechanic could help consumers and businesses make better-informed decisions. Lemon Squad president and CEO Andy Dabbs also said in the announcement that the company’s inspection included rigorous testing. Those quotations describe the executives’ view of the service; they do not expand what an inspection can establish under its terms.

How inspections differ from repairs

Service Customer moment What it is for
Lemon Squad pre-purchase inspection Before buying a vehicle An inspector visits the vehicle and reports observations that can inform a purchase decision.
Wrench mobile maintenance or repair During ownership A mobile mechanic carries out a booked maintenance or repair service.

The services are complementary, not interchangeable: an inspection report is not itself a repair, and a repair visit is not a pre-purchase assessment. Wrench’s current service pages identify Lemon Squad as a subsidiary and list inspections alongside mobile repair. They describe categories including standard, exotic, and classic vehicles; motorcycles; commercial trucks, vans, and trailers; and recreational vehicles such as motorhomes and campervans. Availability can vary, so customers should confirm that a particular vehicle type and location are currently served.

What a Lemon Squad inspection can—and cannot—tell a buyer

The service terms describe inspections as based on what the technician sees and hears. They caution that poor lighting, bad weather, and an unclean vehicle can reduce accuracy. The technician does not put the vehicle on a lift, although floor jacks may be used, and diagnostic equipment is not typically used.

KABUDA 4PCS Telescoping Inspection Mirror LED Lighted Inspection Mirror
  • 4 Types in 1 Set: The package includes 2 packs vehicle inspection mirrors and 2 pieces LED inspection mirror, you can choose different style for different occasions, enough to meet your inspection needs
  • Easy to Use: With the retractable rod and the neck mirror, the length of the handheld rod can be adjusted and the neck mirror on a stick can be rotated 360 degrees according to your needs, facilitating the inspection of hard-to-reach areas
  • LED Lighted: the 2pcs LED inspection mirror has 2 extra bright LED lamp on the top of each mirror, which provides convenience for night observation, and helps you to inspect the dark and hard-to-see areas
  • Comfortable to Hold: Designed with the stainless steel rod and the grooved rubber handle, the telescoping mirror is not easy to break, non-slip, comfortable to hold and easy to operate, so you can easily perform checking and adjust makeup
  • Wide Application: The telescoping mirror is suitable for toolmakers, machinists, engineers, mechanics, inspectors and dentists. And the inspection mirror can be stored in garage, toolbox, vehicle, car, dressing table or bag
  • It is not a vehicle-history or title check. An inspector may identify the VIN, but the service does not verify VIN authenticity, vehicle history, or title.
  • It is not a comprehensive diagnostic workup. Because diagnostic equipment is not typically used and the assessment is based on observable conditions, it cannot establish that every mechanical or electronic problem has been found.
  • It is not a state or smog inspection. The terms say the service is not equivalent to either government inspection.
  • It is not a guarantee of safety or future reliability. The findings can help a buyer evaluate a vehicle, but the stated limits mean the report should not be treated as certification that the car is safe or will remain trouble-free.

For a used-car buyer, that makes the inspection one input into a decision, not a substitute for checking the title and history, understanding the seller’s disclosures, or determining whether a vehicle meets local legal requirements.

Later examples of inspection distribution

On February 22, 2024, PrivateAuto announced that buyers or sellers using its private-vehicle marketplace app could order a Lemon Squad inspection. Its announcement described a report covering exterior and interior condition, mechanical issues, a road test, tire condition, photos, and 78 inspection points. That is the report description in the 2024 announcement, not confirmation of the current report template or of present-day integration availability.

What remains undisclosed

Wrench’s acquisition announcement and the reviewed contemporaneous coverage do not state a purchase price or other transaction terms. They also do not independently verify the company’s 2020 “largest network” characterization. The network count and turnaround interval should therefore be understood only as claims made in the 2020 announcement, not as current operating figures.
