World Liberty Financial’s Website Outage, Worldcoin’s Rebrand and the New Orb: What Happened in 2024

The October 2024 “crash” referred to World Liberty Financial’s token-sale website outages. Worldcoin separately rebranded its project as World while retaining WLD as the token name.

The “crash” in the October 2024 CryptoWatch headline referred to outages on World Liberty Financial’s token-sale website—not, by itself, a confirmed crash in WLFI’s market price. Separately, on October 17, 2024, Worldcoin announced that its project would be called World or World Network, unveiled a new Orb verification device and kept Worldcoin as the name of its WLD token.

What “World Liberty Financial crash” meant in the 2024 report

The Tech Times article behind the October 21, 2024 headline described World Liberty Financial’s website going down during heavy traffic after the launch of its first token sale. The report attributed the explanation “excessive traffic” to company advisor Sandy Peng. It also attributed 72 million unique visits during the first availability round to Peng; that is a figure reported by the article, not an independently verified visitor count.

The article discussed token-sale progress separately, reporting an initially small share of the offered tokens sold and a larger cumulative amount later. Those were dated launch-period claims, not a current account of WLFI’s circulating supply, token distribution or market value.

  • Website outage: a service-availability problem during a surge of traffic, according to the 2024 report.
  • Token-price crash: a market-price decline, which requires price data and a defined time period. The outage report alone does not establish one.

Did Worldcoin change its name to World?

On October 17, 2024, at an event in San Francisco, the project announced the name World, also referred to as World Network. The name change applied to the project and network—not to the token ticker. World’s support glossary continues to identify Worldcoin (WLD) as a token.

World’s announcement said “Worldcoin” no longer captured the project’s mission as it expanded. The event recap also listed World ID 3.0, World App 3.0 and the World Chain mainnet among the announcements. These are distinct parts of the project: the network, identity system, app, blockchain and token should not be treated as interchangeable names.

Name What it refers to
World / World Network The project and network brand announced in October 2024.
Worldcoin (WLD) The project’s token, according to World’s support glossary.
World ID The project’s proof-of-human identity system.
Orb The device used in the project’s verification process.

What the new World Orb does—and what its performance claim means

The Orb is a device used to verify that a person is a real, unique human for World ID. World said the generation unveiled on October 17, 2024 used an NVIDIA Jetson chipset and delivered “nearly 5x” the AI performance of the previous version. That is World’s product-performance claim; it was not an independent test result in the announcement.

World also described hardware and software changes intended to make verification faster and support growth. Those statements describe the company’s announced aims, not a guarantee of verification speed or availability in every location.

What Orb verification means for biometric privacy

Verification involves face and eye imagery, so it is a biometric-data process. World’s privacy explanations say the Orb captures those images for proof-of-human verification. The company says its Personal Custody design transfers a verification package to the user’s device and that images are deleted from the Orb.

Those are World’s descriptions of its system and data handling. They should not be read as an independent audit or as proof that biometric verification has no privacy or security risks. Anyone considering verification should review World’s current privacy information and assess the implications of providing biometric imagery before proceeding.

What WLFI and USD1 are in the current project context

World Liberty Financial’s official site describes WLFI as a token used for trading, staking, governance and unlocking tokens. It also presents USD1 as a stablecoin and says BitGo issues it. The site says World Liberty Financial LLC and affiliated entities own the USD1 brand and provide certain services, and discloses an indirect economic interest related to interest on reserve assets. These are the project’s own descriptions, not independent assessments of the tokens or their risks.

WLFI is a separate project from World and its WLD token. Similarities in names or the shared association with crypto do not establish a corporate or technical connection between them.

Where to find top crypto prices without mixing dates or assets

A “top crypto prices” list is only useful when every quote has a provider, retrieval time in UTC, quote currency and comparison window. A price table should also distinguish spot prices from 24-hour or seven-day percentage changes and state when market-cap rankings were measured. Because crypto prices move continuously, a figure without a timestamp can quickly become misleading.

The historical CoinGecko WLFI data reviewed for this article includes dated observations through October 7, 2026; it is not a live quote. It does not establish a current WLFI price or a contemporaneous set of prices for BTC, ETH, WLD and other leading assets. No current-price figures are included here rather than presenting stale or unsupported numbers as today’s market snapshot.
